Ever live close to a pro athlete?

Growing up-I lived 5 houses away from a Detroit Tiger. I will turn this into trivia questions.

a.)He holds the Tiger Record for Highest Lifetime Winning Pct. (200 or more innings)

b.) He holds the MLB Record for Lifetime Lowest Batting Avg.(player getting at least one hit)

c.) During one season he lead the NL in saves

Who was the pro athlete that lived closest too me?

Brooks Robinson lived 3 houses up the street from me growing up. Great guy.

Lived across the street from former pro football player/coach Maxie Baughn.

My parents used to live near Nick Markakis. Dad sad he saw him at 7-11 every once in a while. Shawn Michaels lives about 2 miles up the road from me.

My wife lived a few houses down from Johny Unites growing up.

I think that would be Fred Gladding.

Current Chicago Cub Eric Jokisch is from my hometown (1800 people). Does that count?

Fred Gladding is the correct answer.

I wonder who was the pitcher that gave up his lone hit?

Re: Ever live close to a pro athlete?

For a few years around my early college years we lived in a house with a full size football/soccer field and basketball/tennis courts right in front of our house. My friends and I used to play football all the time. One day Redskin Vernon Dean came out and played with us. Darn was he fast compared to us.

Muhammed Ali lived about 5 minutes from me in New Jersey from 1971-74 when he was training for his epic fights with Joe Frazier. I was born around that time, but my brother said he used to see him jogging all of the time in the neighborhood.

Not anyone that I can name. But pro marathoners move to Albuquerque for the warm winters and mile-high altitude. I occasionally see them running. They don't move like normal people. They're springy like gazelles.

My Uncle lived a couple houses down from Dino Ciccarelli, I don't know if he still does

I used to run into Barry Sanders at the mall near my house all the time, but I don't know where he lived.

Grew up down the street from Mike Alstott. And I live four blocks from Trump Tower Chicago where Derrick Rose resides if that counts.

Many over the years from a couple of doors to a block or three. However they have come and gone due to retirement or trades. Most where/are Hawks or Cubs players. The only Bulls player I know that is somewhat near (around 6 blocks) is Noah but that's not really that close.

My friends go to the same church as Matt Hasselbeck. And I used to live a few blocks away from Kurt Rambis, but that's before he was a pro since he went to my HS about 12 years earlier. When I was there, he came back to get his number retired.

Re: Ever live close to a pro athlete?

I lived four houses down from Alexis Arguello when he was living in Miami in the early/mid 1980s. His son and I used to carpool to school together (went to the same K-8). I met him a few times, he was a very nice guy. Was sad to hear about his passing in 2009.

Re: Ever live close to a pro athlete?

Not personally but I had a friend that lived by "Baby Joe" Mesi.

He also used to shop at the grocery store I worked at frequently. I was a cashier and he had come through the line on numerous occasions.

Brandon Pettegrew lived down the street from us before we moved. Would take the kids over there on Halloween and wish him the best.

When I moved into my new house ina gated community a few years back, we had Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf living a few doors down the street. I knew then that I had finally arrived. Then a year or two later someone broke into their house and they moved away.

Re: Ever live close to a pro athlete?

What's funny is that after that, they threw a lot of stuff away prior to moving and some part of me wanted to look through their curbside junk for any cool stuff worth salvaging. Then I thought better of it.

Re: Ever live close to a pro athlete?

My favorite was Bob Uecker. We didn't actually live that close to him, but my family shopped at the same KMart. One day my buddy and I ran into him in the lawn and garden section and he started telling us about how his favorite hobby during the summer was cut the grass on his riding lawnmower. He talked about it for a good 15 or 20 minutes and had us absolutely rolling. The guy was hilarious.

Around that same time (early '80s) I hung out at my cousin's a lot and he lived close to Gorman Thomas and Pete Vukovich of the Brewers. I never approached them because frankly they scared the hell out of me. Later I played in an American Legion all-star game held after a Brewer home game in Milwaukee County Stadium and finally got a chance to meet them. They said we should come drink beers with them next time I was over. Never got the chance as my cousin moved shortly after. Not sure I would have anyway as they still scared the hell out of me.

There were others, such as I lived across the street from a NY Giants WR. Our kids played together. More on topic, but less interesting.

Re: Ever live close to a pro athlete?

Former UNC Tarheel/Cleveland Cav Brad Daugherty has a horse farm(!) a few miles away from where I lived in Asheville NC . I met him several times. He couldn't have been nicer. Usually saw him at stores in a big pickup truck with hay in the bed.
