Re: 2014 NFL Regular Season Thread -- Week 17

AFC Seeds are easy:

1 - Patriots
2 - Broncos, unless they lose to OAK and CIN beats PIT, then Bengals
3 - Winner of CIN/PIT game, unless CIN moves up to 2 and bumps DEN down here
4 - Colts
5 - Loser of CIN/PIT game
6 - First of the following teams to win: Chargers, Ravens, Texans, Chiefs

NFC seeds, not so easy... I *think* it goes like this:

1 - First of the following teams to win: Seahawks, Packers, Cardinals, Lions
2 - Cowboys (if Seattle and Arizona both lose), otherwise first of the following teams to win AFTER eliminating whomever earned the #1 seed: Packers, Lions, Cardinals
3 - Cowboys (if Seattle and/or Arizona won), otherwise Seahawks
4 - Winner of CAR/ATL game
5 - Seahawks (if Seattle loses and Arizona wins), otherwise Cardinals
6 - Loser of DET/GBP game

ALL OF THE ABOVE IGNORES THE POSSIBILITY OF A GAME ENDING IN A TIE

Re: 2014 NFL Regular Season Thread -- Week 17

I thought the Packers or Lions could grab the number one seed if they were to tie? Extremely unlikely, but always a slim possibility.

Or the report I heard was out of date or inaccurate. But given the effect of the tie scenario in the AFC, I believe it was accurate, but possibly out of date.

So wish the Packers Lions game was on SNF.

Cowboys get the 1 seed if they win and the Packers and Lions tie.

I've eliminated scenarios involving ties. The Cowboys could move to #1 with a win if the Packers/Lions end up tied.

If Dallas wins (12-4) and there's a winner in the Packer/Lion game (12-4), Dallas loses the tiebreak to the NFC North champ. If Seattle also wins (12-4) making a 3-way tie, Dallas still loses. The only way to get the #1 seed is to NOT be involved in a tie with an NFC North team, so they need a win and a Packer/Lion tie.

Turns out it doesn't matter if they're alone at (12-4) or if Seattle is also (12-4) because Dallas beat the Seahawks.

Got it. Pretty ridiculous to make a list of scenarios and not include all the scenarios.

Cowboys will almost certainly win, so from Seattle's perspective it's win and hope the Lions destroy the Packers.

Ha ha, well... I didn't list the possibility of the fans in Green Bay taking over the field, refusing to leave, forcing the refs to forfeit the game. Or of an explosion occuring at the Georgia Dome, killing all members of both teams, forcing the NFL to give the NFC South berth to New Orleans. Or of a terrorist attack happening in Chicago, causing the NFL to cancel the remaining games and going forward with the standings after week 16 as if they were final.

You know and I know that tie games are HELLA rare. There have only been 20 tied games in the past 40 NFL seasons, dating back to 9/22/74 (DEN 35, PIT 35). That's approximately one tie for every 500 games played. So all in all, it's kinda reasonable to exclude ties when looking at playoff permutations. If a tie happens, then just ignore everything I've posted and rely on your own brain to figure things out.

Sorry, you actually did list a tie in one of the scenarios. Just cut and paste all the scenarios. Or better yet, just link to the source, which is easier for everybody.

Of course ties are really rare. But I doubt I'm the only one that would prefer a full list no matter how unlikely some of them are. In fact, I think a couple of ties that need to happen are more likely than a couple of the losses that are needed.

The #Browns announce they have suspended Josh Gordon for violation of team rules, per @Andrew_Gribble
Waits for the inevitable NFL announcement that he failed another drug test.

Whatever.

As I posted before, you could just link to where the data is coming from.

Sorry if you are taking this personally, but topics like playoff scenarios are really only useful if they are complete and accurate. Anything else just leads to confusion as people see or hear content that is complete and accurate.

Yes, I could.

But those scenarios are bogged down with multiple tie possibilities. I had attempted to simplify things in a more realistic manner by excluding the possibility of a game ending in a tie.

Gordon. Glad I carried that loser on my roster for half the year so he could give me one game. What a waste of talent.

Right back at ya.

If anything is insufferable, it's the constant posting of simple information we all read or hear elsewhere. I'm certainly not expecting anybody to type anything out that can simply be linked to, like NFL playoff scenarios.

Anyways, is it too much to ask people actually add something discussion wise rather than just parrot something they saw on twitter or heard on ESPN? Of if they are going to repost something from elsewhere, that they bring over the whole thing?

Nope, complaining about it is certainly more insufferable.

Agreed that if you don't care about it then you can just ignore it

These threads become completely worthless with post after post that are nothing more than a retweets of news already posted elsewhere.

Never said I don't care. I would rather see more actual discussion, rather than a bunch of parrots squawking, but I will let it go.

There's plenty of discussions when the games actually start or there's news to report; you'd have a point if the inclusion of these odds or situations actually deterred discussion, but I haven't seen that be the case in the years i've been here.

I never said the posts deterred discussion. My point is news stories report themselves. More often than not, since I've been reading anyway, there is no discussion that goes with the retweets. People just re-reporting the news, adding nothing of their own. I would feel differently if we were getting info not already posted elsewhere, but I don't believe I've ever seen that in the sports forum.

I agree things change when the games begin., Till then...
