2014-2015 NCAA Football Offseason Thread

As was posted in the weekly thread, Bo Pelini is out at Nebraska.

That leaves 2 major jobs open (Nebraska and Florida) with one more soon to be available (Michigan)

Auburn fired their DC today. Wonder if Muschamp ends up there if he doesn't get a head coaching job.

Interesting hire

Buffalo hired Lance Leipold. Leipold won 5 D3 national championships at Wisconsin-Whitewater where he was 106-6.

Not news to anybody, or unexpected, but Hoke officially and finally out at Michigan. Too bad.

Colorado St head coach Jim McElwain seems to be the leader for the Florida job, the AD is in Fort Collins right now.

Florida fans are not happy.

Ft. Collins to Gainesville is quite the jump.

Re: 2014-2015 NCAA Football Offseason Thread

Anybody who is paying attention to how Foley operates should know McElwain has been the leading candidate for UF. He was OC at Bama for 2 National Championships - one year they outcouched Urban Meyers staff in. His offense at Colorado State puts up nice numbers and has steadily improved. He is a family guy. His 3 years of HC experience is about the same a Urban Meyer's 4 years (2 at Bowling Green and 2 at Utah). Utah in 2005 is almost comparable to CSU today

Everyone who wanted Dan Mullen back is crazy. He was never Foley's guy. His team caught lightning in a bottle this year with a senior heavy team but essentially is a boring team.

Re: 2014-2015 NCAA Football Offseason Thread

Dan Mullen's offense never really excited me. Those teams were predicated on how Tebow and Harvin along with Demps, Rainey, Hernandez, Cooper and the rest of the crew were able to operate and not the "genius" offensive mind of Mullen. I'm alright with McElwain as long as he teaches players how to get better at football along with instilling discipline and responsibility into each one of them. I don't want anything to do with a Jimbo Fisher type.

Re: 2014-2015 NCAA Football Offseason Thread

Yeah, real surprising. Winner in this is Oregon State, IIRC they had a very long-term contract with Riley and the fanbase there was getting antsy with the lack of progress, though not sure how much they can excel in Corvallis with the competition in the Pac-12.

If they want a complete 180 from Pelini, they got it.

Re: 2014-2015 NCAA Football Offseason Thread

This is pretty funny. Beaver fans have been calling sports talk stations around here for a few months now, saying that Riley should fired. The hosts always told them that Oregon State can't afford to pay Riley the rest of what he is owed plus pay a new coach. Now they get to dump Riley for free.

@ClayTravisBGID 46m46 minutes ago
In 14 years at Oregon State Mike Riley has gone 93-80 with 7 winning records, and 7 losing records.

After this hire do any Nebraska fans still want to argue they're a premier program?

In slight defense of Riley, OSU might be the worst coaching job in the power five conferences.

The hire is still pretty bad though.

More twitter feedback:

@McMurphyESPN: RT @mitchsherman: Mike Riley is older than Tom Osborne at the age he retired

For sure some people will want the job, but it is still tough to do anything there: Small town, in Oregon's shadow, unrealistic fan expectations, lousy facilities, low salaries for coach and coordinators, not a lot of in-area talent to recruit from, etc.

I was being sarcastic, particularly when you take into account everything you have mentioned.

He was a successful coach there.

Wisconsin would have preferred to hire Chryst over Anderson two years ago already. Win win win.

Michigan won't quit.

From Ian Rapoport:
Michigan has made another run at Jim Harbaugh after he initially rebuffed the school. U-M has made an offer of 6 years, $48M.

Does Saban make $8M a year?

Re: 2014-2015 NCAA Football Offseason Thread

I'm getting a kick out of the NFL guys finally coming around on the chances of Harbaugh to Michigan after being so snobbish about it over the last three weeks. Of course, refusing to admit they were dead fucking wrong, they're spinning it as Michigan trying a second time after being rebuffed, when every Michigan insider has known that was bullshit from day one. In fact, the opposite has been true for quite some time now, as Harbaugh has been telling former teammates. Could it all fall apart? Sure, after the 2010 reneging, no one will be 100% convinced until the press conference - but almost every UM source believes it's a done deal, including several who never go out on a limb like this. And at least one recruit has been told the same.
