Re: MLB 2014 Playoffs, Division Series Edition

As someone who hasn't owned a TV in years, let alone subscribe to cable, it's always a pain in the ass to watch playoff baseball. MLB just sent an email about how awesome it is that for the first time, we MLB.TV subscribers can watch playoff games live, but it's a very small subset of games, and even then, you still need a cable subscription, and even worse, Time Warner doesn't have an agreement with TBS, so I can't even watch those games either. Is this crap ever going to end? I pay $125 a year to watch the regular season, so I'm perfectly willing to pay $25 or $30 for the full post season. I'd be HAPPY to do so! So frustrating.

I found a simple solution just now that might work, so I can watch this game live (so far). We'll see how this goes.

So former Adam Jones throw-in Chris Tillman is starting for the Orioles. Is he considered their #1? I would have thought they'd have had time to set up their rotation between clinching and now.

Yep, but really their 1 through 4 are all about the same, at least this year. He's certainly been their best starter the last 2 years. And the rest of the starters have sucked against DET this year, which is why I hated this match up. As we're seeing now. Would much rather have seen a team like LAA.

Re: MLB 2014 Playoffs, Division Series Edition

That first inning is a perfect example of why the vaunted Tiger rotation can only do so much to get them to the title, or in this case, the ALCS.

Scherzer struggles, and really that could have been A LOT worse than it was if not for the DP.

But hey, Victor Martinez responds right away. Tillman throws a real meatball there. Sheesh.

And look at the Martinez boys. Wow. Another freaking meatball. OK, forget what I said about Scherzer

So the idea is that eventually Bundy and Gausman will be the lead dogs? Or is Gausman not thought of that way anymore?

Lot of pitches. Would not be surprised to see Buck go to Gausman early.

Gausman is not going to start. Well, at least he's not slated to start. Like I said in my post above, I expect him to be the 'long' reliever if they need it. I have no idea who Bundy is. Outside of scoring 4 TDs in a HS game.

Night and day between the crew in the TV booth. It makes such a big difference for me. Brian Anderson is awesome, he's one of the main reasons why I regularly watch the Brewers games during the regular season. I'm already dreading the second game because of Ernie Johnson and (sorry) Cal Ripken. Ron Darling is great with the Mets crew, but he sucks with these two guys too.

I've read lots of analysis on Gausman really needing to develop an at least "average" second (and third) pitch before he's truly an effective pitcher. Right now, only his 4-seamer is considered a good pitch. In fact, a popular opinion is that he's destined for late-inning relief.

I've never been a fan of TBS's presentation in general. Their pre-game show sucks. They actually asked viewers to answer on Twitter about who has aged better, Pedro or Sheffield. Ugh.

Cal was better when he was doing the pre and post game shows.

And there go the O's. Scherzer not really fooling anyone today. Even if they don't get the huge hit, they're making him work. And the Tigers just aren't gonna win a bullpen game here.

My limited knowledge of the Orioles system gave me the impression that Gausman and Dylan Bundy were considered the "high ceiling" guys who had the potential to be top-of-rotation starters. Obviously not everyone pans out as expected, especially when injuries happen. I actually didn't realize till now that Gausman had been a regular starter this year.

This is all exacerbated for me because I watch every broadcast crew during the year and there are some really great ones, but also some terrible ones. I end up watching the broadcasts with the better crew whenever possible. But I think the booth for TBS, ESPN, and Fox are all pretty terrible in comparison to, say, those for the Giants, Brewers, Orioles, Mets, just to name a few. When you take guys who don't work together except a few games in the post season, it's got to be hard to really develop that rapport. And of course, just because you were a star baseball player doesn't mean you belong in the booth (or studio) as an analyst (I'm looking at YOU, ESPN), but these networks think the star power will somehow boost ratings or something.

With this pitch count, Buck is going to have work some bullpen magic tonight. He'll try to milk 5 out of Tillman.

100 pitches and third time through the batting order, I'd say Hunter should already be in.

Okay, he survived that inning, but that better be it for Tillman now.

fun: Of the 105 pitches Tillman has thrown, 30 have been to Kinsler!
