The 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot

The 2014 Hall of Fame ballot was released today. And it's loaded with candidates who could be debated for many years to come. In fact, I started a similar thread and poll last year, and many predicted (and the poll reflected this) correctly that no one would be voted in. So now the ballot is more bloated. Several worthwhile names have been added this year, which likely means there won't be room on the ballot for others who received support previously.

The question--Who would you vote for if you had the ballot in your hand?

The rules are the same for you, as it is for the writers. You can only vote for a maximum of 10 players. Also, if you want to predict who you actually think will be voted in, that's fine. But the poll is for your personal picks.

My apologies to the friends and family of Moises Alou, Armando Benitez, Sean Casey, Ray Durham, Eric Gagne, Jacque Jones, Todd Jones, Paul LoDuca, Hideo Nomo, Kenny Rogers, Richie Sexson, J.T. Snow and Mike Timlin. If you want to cast a vote for any of them, I left you an "other" option in the poll.

Look again. It takes time to type all those names out.

And it might be of interest to know who will be on the ballot in years to come (notable names as decided by yours truly):

2015: Nomar Garciaparra, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Gary Sheffield, John Smoltz,

2016: Jim Edmonds, Ken Griffey Jr., Trevor Hoffman, Billy Wagner

2017: Vladimir Guerrero, Jorge Posada, Manny Ramirez, Ivan Rodriguez

2018: Chipper Jones, Scott Rolen, Jim Thome, Omar Vizquel

2019: Todd Helton, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera

Re: The 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot

I voted for 10 guys as I did last year. And I ran into the problem which many writers will face this time around. There was no way I was going to leave off Greg Maddux or Frank Thomas. I like Tom Glavine, but I always felt that he was somewhat overrated. So I had to not vote for guys that I voted for last year--I chose to remove McGwire and Sosa. Seemed fitting they would continue to be linked together.

My ballot
Bagwell
Biggio
Bonds
Clemens
Maddux
Martinez
Palmeiro
Piazza
Raines
Thomas

I don't believe you have to be "officially" retired to be eligible for a ballot. You just have to avoid playing a MLB game. Ramirez last played in the majors in 2011, so at this point he would appear on the ballot that would be released in late 2016. If he appears in a game next year for a major league team, his clock will reset and he wouldn't be eligible until 5 years after his last appearance.

Hey, thought I'd let some of you know that you seem to be experiencing trouble with your mouse. Even though you're all clicking the box by Fred McGriff it doesn't seem to be registering most of the clicks. Just FYI.

Yeah, because it is quite normal to hit a career high in homeruns at age 39

Just voted based on careers rather than guessing who was using in a league where almost everyone is/was.

Voted for the max but predicting that only Maddux/Glavine/Thomas get in and nobody from prior years gets in. Also think one of Sosa/Palmeiro doesn't even get the necessary 5% to remain on the ballot in 2015.

I'm curious why someone voted Bonds and not Clemens. They're pretty much in the same boat. Why one over the other?

Can't speak for somebody else but sometimes in these polls the voter doesn't realize you can vote for more than one player until after they vote.

That wasn't me, but it almost was. I think both are deserving but I hate Clemens and don't have the same hate for Bonds.

But in the end, I voted for both. Plus Maddux, Glavine, Trammell, Piazza, Raines, and Thomas.

I'm curious how someone managed to convince themselves that not voting for Maddux made any kind of sense.

Edit: Nevermind. Figured it out.

Of those, I think only Biggio, Glavine, Maddux and Thomas will actually get voted in this year.

Bagwell
(I missed voting for Biggio, but I meant to)
Bonds
Clemens
Glavine
Kent
Maddux
McGriff
Piazza
Thomas

I'll go out on a limb and repeat my previous guess that Greg Maddux enters as the first-ever unanimous selection. If he doesn't, I don't think anybody will. Shame on the two of you who are keeping him from being unanimous on our ballot!

More than five in any one year is too many. Was pretty close to picking Glavine over Biggio.

If Cal Ripken Jr/Nolan Ryan didn't get it, nobody ever will. There aways has to be one "too cool for room" douche bag who isnt going to vote
