Worse Game 6 Loss - Spurs or Bruins?

Spurs: 5 point lead with 0:28 to go. End up losing in OT.
Bruins: 1 point lead with 1:16 to go. End up losing in regulation.

On one hand, Spurs would have won the title if they won game 6. Bruins would have only forced a game 7. So, the Spurs loss seems much worse.

On the other hand, is it really that unheard of for a basketball team to score 5 points in around 30 seconds? Seems like that happens quite often. But, giving up 2 goals in 17 seconds in basically the last minute of an NHL game seems much rarer. With a little over a minute to go in a one goal game, a realistic worst-case-scenario is that you give up a goal and go to OT. Did anybody on the Bruins expect to lose in regulation with such little time left?

That's your answer. Not to mention, Boston was the beneficiary of the biggest game 7 collapse I've ever seen a month ago. Close the thread.

Re: Worse Game 6 Loss - Spurs or Bruins?

I voted Bruins.

1. It's a lot harder to give up 2 goals in just over a minute in hockey than it is to give up 5 points in 30 seconds in basketball.

2. Spurs losing forced a game 7 where they had a chance to clean up their mess. Not to mention all of overtime.

3. Bruins lost at home and it ended their season.

5 points in basketball compared to giving up 2 goals in Hockey?

No question. Bruins

I voted for the Spurs. I hate the Heat and wanted the Spurs to win. I wanted the Blackhawks to beat the Bruins. So for me, the Spurs were the worse loss.

Another thing to consider: Bruins were Stanley Cup champions only two years earlier. Spurs had won 3 out of the last 10 NBA champions.

If the Bruins were replaced with the Toronto Maple Leafs, or if the Spurs were replaced with the Golden State Warriors, that would definitely affect my vote. To me, it's harder to feel sorry for a team that's recently won a championship or two or three.

Yep. We Boston sports fans have been spoiled the last 10 years or so, and when you do see your team get the championship, the losses in the next couple of years are depressing, but not that crushing. You win some and you lose some.

Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS was brutal for me---I barely watched a regular season Red Sox game in 2004 because of that.

Note that technically, saying the Bruins lost game 6 in a thread title is against forum spoiler rules. Not sure how many people care who don't already know that info.

Eh, it's a day later and it was the Finals. If you were that interested in it you would have known the outcome long before this thread started. I believe the spirit of that rule is that you don't post these things moments after it happens but if it's a day later, you're ok.

Well, I didn't specify it was the Finals. The Bruins lost game 6 of their series against Toronto. Maybe I was talking about that game.

And I didn't specify that it was this year. Two years ago, the Bruins lost game 6 against Montreal in round 1 and against Tampa Bay in round 3.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what everyone was thinking.

And as I said, I'm sure the people who really care already knew--it's not like the guy who posted "Are the Patriots the New Buffalo Bills?" minutes after the Super Bowl ended. But I'm just pointing out the rules, and there probably could be more ambiguous ways to title the thread (which would not be as compelling, I realize).

Re: Worse Game 6 Loss - Spurs or Bruins?

Guess there's no reason to watch the hockey game I DVR'd.

Spoiler:

I'll vote the Spurs. That close to winning game 6 and the title...

5.2 seconds away from a Championship? I'll vote for the Spurs.

Spurs, but i'm biased since I don't care for hockey and wanted the Heat to lose so badly.

Spurs had the worse loss since they were about to win the championship.

wow, I think that factor cuts the other way. The Spurs loss had less import because they had another chance. The Bruins loss was worse because it meant their season was over.

Lifelong Spurs fan. That game 6 loss is the worst loss I've ever experienced, in any sport. I literally didn't sleep that night. Still haven't watched ESPN since then.

Fuck.

How often does a team come back from a loss like that, though? Generally they lie down and die the next day.

It was a crushing loss, but it doesn't compare to game 6 of the 2011 World Series in my opinion. 1 strike away twice, and a very catchable bloop triple. I had a pretty epic meltdown on here during that game.

Yeah that's much worse than the Bruins being two years removed from a cup. I still can't believe the Rangers didn't pull that off.

Same poll that was on the DP show today. Spurs.. They had the championship won.. and let it slip away. The Bruins had a devastating loss.. but if they won or tied, it would have still not guaranteed a championship.

Yes, but the Spurs still had Game 7 in the pocket, so they had another chance. If they had won game 7, nobody would be talking about game 6. It's kind like how Buckner gets the bad rap about the '86 World Series, despite the fact that his error happened after the Mets had already tied the game, and the Sox had another chance in game 7.

Bruins choked away their only chance to keep their title hopes alive. And they did it at home.

Bruins had to win, Spurs didn't.

Re: Worse Game 6 Loss - Spurs or Bruins?

I can see both sides of letting a championship slip away vs being unable to fend off elimination.

But the bottom line is that it's that unheard of to be up by 5 with 28 seconds to go and still end up in OT. It's not that unheard of to be up by 3 with 5 seconds to go and still end up in OT.

If you've got a 1 goal lead in hockey with 1:16 to go, conventional wisdom is that worst case scenario: you give up one goal and go to overtime.

If you showed someone the basketball game and stopped it with 28 seconds left, then showed the hockey game and stopped it with 1:16 left, and asked 100 people which event is more likely:

Heat win in OT
Hawks win in regulation

I'd bet at least 99 say Heat winning in OT is more likely.
