AKA : Where we expected to move the Lakers talk discussion at the end of the season.

Let the firings begin. Byron Scott out as Cavs head coach following a 24-58 season. He spent three LeBon-free seasons as head coach. Fun fact : The Heat won more games this season (66) than the Cavs have won since LeBron left three years ago (64).

Doug Collins resigns as Sixers head coach after three seasons. He was not fired. He is expected to stay with the Sixers in some capacity as an adviser.

Decker did you jump the gun? Did we have the Off Season thread and A Playoff thread going on at the same time last year?

I think we usually have both, with the off-season thread being for news regarding teams that are out golfing now.

Typical Miami Heat fan : Thinks the off-season doesn't begin until after the Finals.

A "Little" spoiled? BTW we did win one in 2006 and had many years of great teams with Hardaway and Mouring. But yes after either these guys leave or retire basketball will be fustrating as hell.

Re: Official 2013 NBA Off-Season Thread

But the offseason thread doesn't really get amped up until the lottery, free agent signings, etc. All that will happen now is that a few teams fire their coaches and hire new ones (this will probably continue into the first round, if there are any major upsets... I'm looking at you, Del Negro).

I hear Lebron and Wade are planning to join Dwight with the Lakers in 2014.

You can keep Bosh...pretty sure he's overpaid.

I wouldn't consider Memphis beating the Clips to be a "major upset", but I would be a bit surprised.

And Del Negro is a perfect coach for the Clippers. He fits their longstanding tradition of mediocrity.

Incidentally, I loved the new Chris Paul ad about wanting to hang banners in Staples. Hahahahahahahahahahaha.....No.

True, maybe not a major upset, but upset enough that they can justify not renewing his contract. The rumor is that they were ticked that he asked Celtics management directly about Garnett. I'm not even sure they have a GM, so I don't know who's ticked... maybe Sterling?

I would agree that he's a perfect coach for the classic mediocre-to-bad Clippers, but man these good Clippers could use someone that can actually draw up plays in close games. And not completely forget about Blake Griffin on the offensive end in long stretches of close games.

Also with Paul healthy and Billups back, Clips seem to be ready for the post season (as long as Griffin's back spasms are minor). Memphis is tough for any team but I think they beat them. And I know it's trendy to hate Blake Griffin, but he's been improving his jumper and his free throw percentage, and doesn't slack off on D.

And cheapness.

I suppose anything's possible, but yeah, that was a weird choice. Anyway, that's an NBA-produced ad, so I can't blame the team for that one.

Lawrence Frank is out as Pistons head coach after two miserable seasons. He was 29-53 this year and 54-94 overall.

The Pistons have been pretty much in the toilet for the last few years. I'd seriously consider firing Dumars.

Re: Official 2013 NBA Off-Season Thread

I was reading Grandland and found this tidbit on #2 picks funny from Bill Simmons.

An updated take on the Curse of Bowie (I wrote about it two years ago): Since Portland stupidly passed on MJ for Bowie in 1984, we've seen the following draft calamities at no. 2: Steve Stipanovich, Len Bias (R.I.P.), Armen Gilliam, Danny Ferry, Shawn Bradley, Stromile Swift, Jay Williams, Darko Milicic, Marvin Williams, Michael Beasley, Hasheem Thabeet, Evan Turner and Derrick Williams. Not counting MKG, that's 13 of the last 27 no. 2 picks! Even weirder, 12 other no. 2 picks (Anderson, Mourning, Kidd, Van Horn, McDyess, Camby, Bibby, Francis, Chandler, Okafor, Aldridge, Tisdale) were traded by the teams that selected them within five seasons. Only Kevin Durant and Gary Payton became franchise players for the teams that drafted them … only that franchise no longer exists. So if you're counting Seattle's murdered franchise, if MKG doesn't make it, we'll be 0 for the last 28 in the "pick him second, pencil him as your franchise guy for the next 12-15 years, retire his jersey" department. There's a reason they call that pick "Number Two."

D'Antoni, Western Conference Coach of the Month... ha!

Kobe is still texting players giving coaching advice during games.

Behold the new logo for the New Orleans Pelicans:

Actually, I kind of like it. Better than that neon blue cartoon wasp anyway.

That's been out for awhile, hasn't it? I like the Hornet better. I just can't take a Pelican serious, no matter how angry they make the eyes.

Re: Official 2013 NBA Off-Season Thread

Agreed. Pelicans is a super dumb mascot, even if the logo isn't bad.

I thought they should have used the name of their now defunct minor league hockey team...phonetically feels a bit like Jazz and at least has some indication of toughness.

Also stays withe the musical theme of the Jazz and Saints.
