Official College Hoops 2013 Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

Let's start the Off-Season off right : Per ESPN, Ben Howland gets canned at UCLA, or he will be on Sunday. He's a good coach, but his players can't stand him. It was time for him to go -- especially since this was supposed to be the show-me year for him and the results were not what the faithful expected.

Hope they break out their checkbook and sign Shaka Smart to whatever he wants. He'd own that conference immediately.

Ben Howland getting the axe

UCLA in general, I hope they never win another title.

That said, the Wooden golden era will never be paralleled by any team. Obviously.

Well that's a huge start to the carousel.

As an Arizona fan I'll respectfully disagree (and I imagine Oregon and Colorado fans would, as well).

If Shaka is going to jump, now seems like the time. VCU is pretty much stuck in a very weakened A10. But maybe he's the sort who wants to be the big fish in a small pond.

His overall win% was 61%, but it was only 43% in the conference.

he's still the best thing that's happened to that school in decades. Minnesota has been to the NCAA tournament 3 of the last 5 years. Prior to that....1 of the last 9. And they're firing the coach? Idiotic I can't believe they think they can do better, unless they want another shady bastard like Clem Haskins. And he just beat a higher seed and almost made the Sweet 16. Horrible decision by them.

I completely agree.

His conference record is the only thing I could think of that might be a reason for his dismissal.

Unless it was a money thing, but if that is a reason - why the hell did they sign him to an extension recently.

I'm interested to see what will happen at Saint Louis U.

Is Jim Crews coming back? Or was this season a nice swan song for a long career?

bizarrely, Flip Saunders is the name everyone is bandying about. That would make ZERO sense. isn't he trying to buy the Timberwolves so he can be their GM?

What I don't understand is why they gave him an extention last summer. This was obviously a make or break year for him there, so why an extention before it?

That's how we roll in Minnesota, Childress, Glen Mason, Tim Brewster all got extensions before getting let go. I hear Kill might get one so he better start looking for work.

Any word on how much they paid Tubby to buy him out?

Hey Minnesota, you know the old adage about not being able to see the asshole in the room? Yeah, you're the asshole

$2.5 million. not too shabby a deal really. Just mind boggling that they think they can do better than him.

Especially considering he never got a single thing THEY promised HIM. no practice facility, no upgrades to anything. They promised him all sorts of stuff and did nothing to improve a thing. And yet he still made them better.

Looks like the Flip rumors continue to build.

I don't understand it one bit.

Not that I think they'll make some slam dunk signing, in reality it won't take much to = Tubby here. In fact, I'm starting to think it's a really good move since Brizz is so upset about it.

Sounds like Shaka is staying at VCU, so any chance of redemption from the media for Teague isn't too likely.

i'm not upset....I just think it's a stupid move. I like Tubby and think he's good for the Big Ten in general in that he's a classy guy, doesn't cheat, and in general is a great face for their program. I think it sucks when the good ones get screwed over.

Didn't Saunders go to school at Minnesota?

The hot board the UCLA rivals has is hilarious. The top 5 guys they have as realistic options are Donovan, Smart, Stevens, Pitino, and Self

Yeah, he's a Gopher. I think he'd be a fine replacement, but there's always a risk.
