2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Yea yea nobody talks about tennis on this forum until the Slams, but whatever.

The top story right now continues to be Nadal being out. Now he claims a stomach virus will keep him out through the Australian Open. I have my doubts that's really issue. His knees are more fucked up then he's willing to let on.

Some people have theorized that Nadal is currently suspended for banned substances. A silent ban, as to not destroy his huge popularity and following. It's an interesting theory but likely not true.

I think Nadal will retire within the next 3 years (while playing sparingly inbetween, perhaps only during the clay season and a couple warmup tournaments for the other Slams).

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

I was reading about that over the weekend. Whatever he's dealing with must be pretty bad to keep him out of another slam along with all the tournaments which lead up to it. Tennis just doesn't feel the same when Nadal isn't in the mix.

I have no basis for saying this but I can't believe the theory that he's silently banned. Tennis is too up tight to keep anything like that a secret.

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Whatever it is going on with Nadal, I would think a stomach virus is not the real reason for his withdrawl from the Australian Open. Maybe he will return for the March hardcourt season in the US but I figure he will wait until the clay court season ramps up in April to make his return.

He claims his next tournament will be Acapulco, a clay tourney held in February. Most surprising is that it's a 250 level tournament. None of the top guys play in 250's...unless there's a huge appearance bonus attached

This guy never seems to have a long enough stretch of good health. Years ago, when people were presuming he would ultimately have more slams than Federer, I didn't think that would come true. He seems like a player who would max / burn out soon. Djokovic, on the other hand......

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

The entire Nadal camp are like the Keystone Cops. You get one contradictory statement after another, and they all sound like bumbling idiots. Not to mention that I can't figure out what the heck his doctor's are doing... Patellar tendons can be repaired through arthroscopic surgery. He should have had that done right after Wimbledon instead of messing around with voodoo unproven treatments like PRP injections... But he said he didn't want to have surgery because that would have been too invasive and he would have been out too long. Huh... how long has he been out now? 6-7 months...

I don't dislike Nadal and I'll be glad to see him back but man... That said, I say he's done winning slams (Djojovic will win RG this year), and he will retire before Federer does. I give him 1-2 more years max.

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

For future reference, keep an eye on this girl:

Ana Konjuh (Croatia)

2012

Tournaments played: 13
Tournaments won: 7
Record (singles): 49-6
ITF ranking: 3
WTF ranking: 877

Why is that impressive? In December, she won the prestigious Eddie Herr and the Orange Bowl tournaments back to back (18 and under), at 14. She just turned 15 last week.

Anyone think there is anything to the rumors/speculation that Rafa is actually suspended for PED's?

It wouldn't surprise me. I always thought that he looked juiced up for a tennis player.

Yeah, I agree that it feels weird without Nadal in the mix, and I hope he can come back in shape for the clay season.

Darren Cahill in Brisbane:

"I've seen more time count violations given in a week than in the entire 2012 season"

Good, the rule is there, enforce it.

Nadal doesn't have a stomach virus, he's been practicing hard to achieve: towelling off, underwear fixing, hair fixing, nose wiping, baseline cleaning, staring at the players box, ball bouncing, all in 25 seconds.

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Clearly not it's hard to admit, but wrestling and women's college sports get attention on DVDTalk then tennis.

Fed looked really good in his first round match. The guy is ageless (I really hope the media doesn't start publicly questioning it)

I don't pay much attention to the Australian until the 2nd week due to the time difference. I usually take off the days after the semi's and final so I can stay up and watch them live. I don't know if I'll be doing that this year.

Yup! Top seeds rolling but there have been a number of good matches so far. Fourteen 5 set matches in the first round! Watching Monfils vs Dolgopolov now, 1 set all, both tie breaks, pretty entertaining.

It's either that or some serious leg injury he's hiding. I'd bet good money Nadal was using PEDs at one point, his style of tennis is so physically demanding and he was playing a very heavy schedule.

Would the tour cover up a suspension? Yes, because publicly suspending one of the tour's biggest and most popular stars for PEDs would hurt the revenues of many tournaments.

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Some pretty surprising upsets on the men's side yesterday. Del Potro lost to Chardy in 5 sets, Seppi beat Cilic in 5 sets, and Monfils lost to Simon in 5.

Last night's match vs Tomic was vintage Federer. It is incredible to see him playing that way at 31, still so light on his feet.

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Yup, great match by Fed. And Tomic has really improved since last year. He has all the tools to be a great player.

With all these upsets, Murray's draw has become quite easy until the semis. Not good for Fed, unless (unlikely), Berdych can take out Djokovic in the other half.

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

I didn't watch the match, but HOLY SHIT 12-10 in the 5th for Djokovic? I feel bad for Stan, that has to be the most deflating loss of his career. To play so long and so well and to still come up short...hope this isn't one of those losses that throws his year into a tailspin.

Also, no way Novak has the energy left that he needs to win the tournament, right? If he still wins it I'll be surprised. I had him as my pre tournament pick to win, but now I'll go with Murray.

Re: 2013 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

That is a big surprise. No way I could have watched it live though, starting at midnight here. I wouldnt count out Novak though. He can be a beast, and if he cruises by the quarters and semis, then I think he is still favored in the final. On the other hand, if Berdych and/or Ferrer tests him, then the money goes to Fed/Murray
