Hope he brings his shovel and pick and teaches his new team "pad level". How this guy is employed to even clean an NFL stadium bathroom is beyond me. Nice guy - met hm twice, but not worthy of anything to do with developing talent.

It's only been 55 years since your last Championship appearance... what's the big deal?

Wow, and 21 years since a playoff victory, second only to my favorite team, the highly respected Bengals.

I'm not sure why people are surprised he's out of a job. I get that went to a Superbowl and NFC Championship games, but the other 7 years were rather mediocre. He's going to have a hard time selling that he could put together a competent offense & coaching staff.
That team was a train wreck when he took over, and he turned them into a contender in short order. I don't personally think they ever got the right pieces on offense to match their defense.

But nevermind all that...

Dude took Rex Grossman to a Super Bowl. Let that sink in. Rex. Freaking. Grossman.

Re: 2012-2013 NFL Offseason Thread

The Bears finished fourth, fourteenth and third in points allowed in the three seasons that Marinelli was their defensive coordinator, and losing Marinelli is a blow for the Bears defense. But Chicago's loss could turn out to be the Cowboys' gain. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune took to Twitter last night to report that Monte Kiffin is hopeful he can get Marinelli to join him in Dallas.

Marinelli and Kiffin worked together in Tampa Bay from 1996 to 2005 so the two are very familiar with each other. It's possible the Cowboys are trying to lure Marinelli to Dallas with the promise of eventually taking over as DC from Kiffin. Whatever the details of a possible agreement turn out to be, signing Marinelli would be a major coup for the Cowboys and their defense.
Marinelli sounds ok to me.

Saw that. For the first time in years, I will actually be looking forward to a Chargers season.

Todd Bowles hired as Arizona DC. Horton is out looking for a job, maybe he lands in Seattle where their DC just got hired as Jags coach.

I have given up hope that the Titans will do anything resembling smart this offseason. At least their unintentional plan of clowning for Clowney or tanking for Teddy is going along real well.

Well, I agree with you on the lack of talent which is I was thrilled when they fired GM Angelo last offseason. However, 4 offensive coordinators in 9 years for Lovie, and if he was back for next year it would have been a 5th. So 4 in 5 years.

Plus the whole Caleb Hanie nonsense. Hanie was with the Bears for 4 years, at some point Lovie should have realized the guy can't play and demanded another backup.

I was hoping Todd Haley would get the spot in AZ. Guess we have to deal with his ineptitude for at least one more year.

Just as quickly, Seattle hired the Florida DC, who used to be their DL coach.

Michael Lombardi, who has been working at NFL Network, was re-hired by the Browns as VP of Player Personnel.

Some of you may remember he worked for the Browns before they moved to Baltimore. He was featured prominently in the '95 Browns segment of A Football Life.

He's a regular on Bill Simmon's podcast. The one from a few days ago made it clear he was looking to get back into the game. I was distracted while listening, but I don't think they talk about it directly. I do recall when discussing coaching/management moves Simmon's made a comment or two saying "they should hire you" and Lombardi response was basically "I hope they do."

Ray Horton landed on his feet quickly. Got a job with the Browns for 4 years, $8 million. Browns have some damn good coaches now.

Yup. Say what you will about Norv as a HC (he's awful) he's always been a damn good OC.

Re: 2012-2013 NFL Offseason Thread

IRVING, Texas -- Rod Marinelli has been named the Dallas Cowboys' new defensive line coach, the team announced Friday night.

Marinelli, at Valley Ranch on Friday, will reunite with defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, whom he worked with for 10 years in Tampa Bay before Marinelli took over as head coach in Detroit in 2006.
Good move. I originally wasn't too thrilled about Kiffin and this change to a 4-3, but the more brain power around that change the better.

Yeah, I think he is a coach on D. Especially if he doesn't have to run much. I was hoping he would come back to Tampa.

And speaking of former Tampa coaches: Oakland hired Greg Olsen to be their OC this week. This is the rankings of his offenses

Greg Olsen's Offense Ranking:

2012: 29th (Jacksonvile QB coach)
2011: 21st (Tampa OC)
2010: 19th (Tampa OC)
2009: 28th (Tampa OC)
2006: 6th (Rams OC)
2007: 24th (Rams OC)
2005: 27th (Detroit OC)

Why does this guy keep getting jobs?

Supposedly, Chip Kelly is bringing in Pat Shurmur as the OC.

There is a big Browns-Eagles connection, not necessarily a good connection, developing.

Pat Shurmur is the most buttoned down, vanilla, scared-to-take-a-chance coach I've ever seen. So it makes perfect sense that he's going to work for a coach that rarely punts on 4th down, often goes for 2, and coaches like every game is a win or go home situation.

Because the NFL is essentially a good ol' boys network where guys look out for their buddies before they look out for their teams. I find it refreshing when guys like Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carrol (as smug and unlikable as they both act) come in and do things on their own terms. It took balls to bench Alex Smith and start Russel Wilson as opposed to their high priced free agent Matt Flynn. Most in the NFL are scared of change, so they hire the same old retread coaches.

Jim Washburn hired by the Lions. Their sack totals should go up but they'll give up a bunch of receptions to RB next year.

I'll take swing passes to the RB over 60 yard posts or pass interference plays.

Re: 2012-2013 NFL Offseason Thread

Love Jerry Jones

The uncomfortable offseason in Dallas continues. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is stripping coach Jason Garrett of play-calling duties.

Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com passes along word straight from Jones at the Senior Bowl where Jones announced that Garrett will no longer call plays. Jones strongly intimated that offensive line coach/coordinator Bill Callahan will call the plays moving forward. Multiple Cowboys reporters said that Callahan will be the play-caller, although that's not officially confirmed. (We'll assume that Callahan won't sabotage things.)

We don't understand this move. At Garrett's initial postseason news conference, he indicated that he planned to continue calling plays. But multiple reports suggested Jones was looking around the league for a play-caller to take that duty off Garrett's plate so that he could focus on "managing" the team. Instead of hiring from the outside, the Cowboys will give Callahan more responsibilities.

It makes no sense on a number of levels. Jones is essentially neutering his head coach. Callahan doesn't have a long history as a play-caller and is more familiar with the running game. It's almost like he's trying to make Garrett quit.

Jones went into the offseason wanting change for the sake of change. Monte Kiffin was a curious hire as defensive coordinator. If Jones wanted to go this far, Jones should have just fired Garrett at the end of the season.

After hearing what Tim Brown had to say about Bill Callahan in the Oak/TB SB, I'm all for Bill Callahan calling plays for Dallas.

Re: 2012-2013 NFL Offseason Thread

I worked with Tim Brown 7 years ago on Fox's NFL Preview show that aired on FSN. He told the production staff that same story that Callahan purposely sabotaged the game. I don't get why he wants to bring it up again and this time to the media. It's really doing him no good.
