Good. Glad Kelly is out of the Pac12.

Oregon was the only opponent that made the championship game competitive. Cam Newton-led Auburn hit a field goal as time expired to win it.

Now many will argue that Carroll and Harbaugh have been successful coming from College, but Carroll was a Head Coach in the NFL, and Harbaugh was a long time QB in the NFL, so both have roots here first.
Don't forget Petrino and the shit he pulled w/ Atlanta. How that guy ever got work again is beyond me.

I'm personally not a fan of pulling college coaches up for the reasons you mentioned and I can't figure out how Lovie Smith is still unemployed!! Please, for the love of God will the Lions at least ask him to be our D coordinator??

Isn't there still the possibility of sanctions at Oregon? He's just following in Pete's footsteps.

Arians is supposedly the front runner in Arizona right now for the coaching spot.

my first thought as well. regarless, he is going to be a disaster in the NFL. the only reason his gimmicky crap has succeeded at Oregon is Nike money buying him recruits and having the fastest guys all over. problem with that is everyone has money in the NFL and everyone is fast. Horrible hire by Philly.

I think the hire is a great one (I'm still mourning the fact that the Browns couldn't close the deal), but when the NCAA hands down penalties, if Kelly has a 'show cause' sanction, he'll probably be unhireable in division 1 college for a long time, effectively cutting his safety net if the Eagles gig doesn't work out.

How does that work? I always assumed Pete Carrol could come back to college if the Seahawks didn't work out.

Philly's probably a decent place for him to go to run an offense. They certainly have weapons with the glaring exception of QB, but other than perhaps the Bears, I don't think any of the teams hiring coaches right now have great QBs (which is a big reason why they're hiring coaches). If they get Vick to come back at a lower salary, that might actually work, and there's a lot written about Kelly's comments about Foles in college. Certainly he's seemingly been able to plug in relative unknowns in his offense at Oregon and have them pan out.

I sure hope not. Rumors are he wants his own defensive coordinator along with him. No fucking way the Cards should give into that. I'd rather they find another coach and suck for a few more years than get rid of Ray Horton (outside of him finding a head coaching job).

It basically says that if the coach is punished, that punishment will go with him for a set number of years no matter where he's employed (if he's employed by a university under NCAA jurisdiction). I don't think Carrol received one (amazingly). I know Jim Tressel got a 5 year penalty with the tattoo for memorabilia cover up.

Shocked nobody hired Lovie Smith. Best coach available IMO. That Bears team had no business being as competitive as they've been under his tenure.

He's still being paid by the Bears. All reports seem to indicate he's going to sit out the 2013 season. He apparently isn't desperate enough to take a DC job.

Re: 2012-2013 NFL Offseason Thread

Jay Glazer from Fox reported this morning the Jags hired Gus Bradley as their new Head Coach.

Last job left is the Cards. Looks like Lovie is sitting out the season.

^ Like I heard last night, if you are Lovie why not sit on a beach and/or behind a commentary desk while getting paid by the Bears for a year. If he goes somewhere else, most of his new contract money essentially goes to the Bears for the first year. Plus next year he probably gets to cherry pick jobs whereas this year he was looking at the scraps.

I wonder how many openings there will be though. There probably won't be as many as this year, but they could include a couple of high profile jobs like Dallas and the NY Jets.

Coaches that may be on the hot seat: Detroit, Carolina, Dallas, NY Jets, Tennessee, and Oakland yet again. Tom Coughlin turns 67, so it's possible he could retire.

Not sure how good Lovie is on camera, but yeah I agree he should get an NFL analyst job for the 2013 season.

Lovie would be horrible behind a desk, but I know that doesn't mean someone wouldn't hire him to do that.

I'm not sure why people are surprised he's out of a job. I get that went to a Superbowl and NFC Championship games, but the other 7 years were rather mediocre. He's going to have a hard time selling that he could put together a competent offense & coaching staff.

Dude, if you were a Lions fan you'd know why Lovie is so well respected -- at least in Detroit. If we had a coach take us to the Superbowl, we'd elect him Mayor, Governor and President all at the same time.
