The slop ruined it. But huge win for City of Light. That's your favorite the rest of the year. Very good all-around horse. Can he get 1 1/4?

No shame for Accelerate.

Crazy Kentucky Oaks. Horse/rider down early on a clip - seem to be fine. Then a huge pay-out with 3 double-digit odds finishing WPS.

Payouts:
$2 EX pays $878
$1 TRI pays $7K
$1 SUP pays $67K

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

That was pretty nuts. Especially the length of the review. I think it's lame that the stewards did not take questions from the press, only reading a prepared statement.

The irony was that Country House really wasn't effected by the incident but got the ultimate benefit. It was more about the effect on War of Will and Long Range Toddy.

Maximum Security was one of the 3 horses I had on top of my exotic plays. I failed (badly) on picking the right horse for 2nd even with a 3x6 box. Can't imagine how livid I would have been had I hit on the exacta and trifecta and lost it.

The payouts were insane of course, with the DQ shifting in multi-millions in payouts. Will be interesting to see who comes back for the Preakness. Usually see most of the Derby horses skip it, but with a long-shot winning the Derby, maybe not this year. I certainly hope Maximum Security runs.

Country House got a 98 Beyer Speed Figure (Maximum Security got a 101). That's pretty low. Though California Chrome had a 97 when he won and he wasn't too shabby of a horse.

Still can't believe they took him down. I don't envy the stewards because they were in a no-win situation, I just don't see how you can take the best horse down in a race of this magnitude, but rules are rues I guess...

Did he LOSE $2100 (as in, that was the amount he put down), or did he just not get the $2100 he would have had there not been a DQ? BIG difference.

I'm not a big Horse Racing fan as I only watch the Triple Crown every year. What is the % of races that get overturned during the racing season because of something like this? I was watching the Horse Racing Network after the Kentucky Derby and the analyst defended the decision because he essentially said a rule is a rule. I think the problem with this decision is you get a boatload of 'casual' fans like me who watch the Triple Crown, so most of those fans will think this is ridiculous. But it seems like the real Horse Racing Fans (not all) understood the decision. I still think it's good for racing because any press is good press, as people are talking about Horse Racing right now. The only thing that ever moves the radar in the sport was a Triple Crown winner, and that generated buzz a few years ago when it finally happened after 30 years.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

I don't know the percentages but it happens. But since it was the result of the horse being green (young and inexperienced) it generally doesn't happen in major races like this.
I think a major reason they felt they had to do it in this instance is to make a point regarding safety. There is a still shot of Maximum Risk and War Of Will that shows just how close we came to a major tragedy. Had those 2 gone down with a herd of other horses right behind them with all the world watching I'm not sure the sport would survive that disaster.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

I can't give you an exact percentage, but I'd say if I go to the track 3 times with 9 races in a day, I'd expect at least one steward's inquiry for that very kind of thing; veering into another horse's path. The results don't get overturned every time, but it does happen. It's not NASCAR, you can't cut other racers off, because it would likely mean catastrophic injury to the racer (which is a living being, not an inanimate vehicle)

No Maximum Security. Now no Country House in the Preakness.

Derby champ Country House out of Preakness

Lovely.

They're certainly not uncommon. I'd guess there are a few each week across all of the tracks.

There have been 19 DQs in Grade 1 races in the last 20 years. Last year's 3yo Filly champ (who dominated her class) was DQ'd in a Grade 1 September race - and that looked far less egregious than this when I watched it, although the foul was against the horse who finished 2nd.

What's funny is the pundit (who was on the Horse Racing Network) who was defending the decision on Saturday also said, "Don't worry, Maximum Security will get his rematch with Country House at the Preakness and it will make great theater!"

What a lame duck of a Preakness this is going to be. I have to imagine the ratings will be horrible with neither the Kentucky Derby champion or the horse who got a participation trophy in the derby being in the race.

Doesn't look like we'll see either horse in the Belmont either.

They need to bring back the bonus for results across the TC races.

Heard about that this morning. The horse failed TWO drug tests. Screw the asterisk, remove the win.
