Nice win for Nyquist yesterday. Will probably be the Derby favorite.

Saturday (4/9) Derby Prep post times (all televised live on NBCSN):

Wood Memorial Stakes (at Aqueduct): 5:30p. M/L favorite: Shagaf 2-1.
Blue Grass Stakes (at Keeneland): 6:00p. M/L favorite: Zulu 5-2.
Santa Anita Derby (at Santa Anita): 6:30p. M/L favorite: Mor Spirit 8-5.

The dominant 3yo filly, Songbird, is also racing in the Santa Anita Oaks tomorrow, which precedes the S.A. Derby. She's a 1-9 M/L favorite.

Songbird gets to show if she is the next Rachel Alexandra....slop at Santa Anita.

Favorites fizzed at the Wood and Blue Grass.

Yeah, no problem. There's your 1-5 or shorter favorite for the Oaks.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

96 Beyer for Creator in the Ark. Derby. Effinex had a 106 at the same distance in the Oaklawn Hdcp.

Seems like a subpar field for Kentucky, at least at this point in their careers. Only 3 100+ BSFs at more than a mile by a 3 year old so far.

Final Derby qualification points:

Bad news -- Songbird will miss the Ky. Oaks due to a low-grade fever. Really bad news if you had her in a futures ticket.

Breeders Cup will return to Churchill in 2018. It's at Santa Anita this year and Del Mar next.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

I usually have some idea of 2 or 3 horses a week or 2 before the Derby but this field is rather unimpressive. I'll probably throw Nyquist and Exaggerator out (unless it's sloppy) and pick 4-5 horses in the 10 to 20-1 range in an Ex Box and pray. I just don't know which ones. There's 12 of them.

Agreed. I'm not nearly as hyped as usual for the Derby this year because I'm not feeling any of these horses this year. Coming off of a Triple Crown probably has something to do with it as well.
Going with Exaggerator as my pick to win.

Cathryn Sophia....not bad. Not in Songbird's class, but good. Keeps my Oaks/Derby Double alive. Had the Ashland top 3 on top. Got 6 shots at it tomorrow. Can't wait to see those Will-Pays.

Exaggerator needed a few more yards of track.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

Strong win by Nyquist. I didn't think he had it in him, particularly with those short odds, but proved me wrong. Only the 2nd Breeders Cup Juvenile Champ to win a Derby (3rd to win a Triple Crown race).

Fucked my Oaks/Derby Double.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

Bad day for TVG wagering:
http://www.drf.com/news/wagering-ken...s-get-shut-out

Betting was down almost 10% this Derby compared to last year....mainly because TVG crashed for the hour before the Derby.

I use twinspires. It's always slowest on Derby Saturday but pretty trouble-free.

Stronach to Run $12 Million Pegasus World Cup

Interesting. At Gulfstream. Basically half-way between the Breeders Cup and Dubai World Cup. Will be the world's richest race.
