Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

It's funny - looking back at the past winners of the Stephen Foster, it's an interesting future. C-man crows about Curlin. The problem w/ C-man is that he jumps on the obvious.

I told him about Blame in 2010. I used Fort Larned in 2012 too, thank you.

Obviously you didn't jump on the obvious the Belmont winner - did you.

Instead you jump on a Pletcher horse that dead last - & next to the last.

American Pharoah most likely will be the favorite. His problem - he's a small horse - he may get beat-up a little by some others in the field.

American Pharoah is a 1-2 favorite in the ML. Far Right is 8-1.
I love this....."a small horse"

No faith.

Oh but once the ARK Derby winner wins, C-man has a man-crush. Greatest horse going.

I don't have the faith that you and another one of our members have on Pletcher horses.

Horse of the Year California Chrome may miss the June 17 Prince of Wales's Stakes (Eng-I) at Royal Ascot because he may have a bruised right front foot.

Why am I not surprised?

I see where California Chrome's rating has gone up with the 'members' at HRN.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

I must now change who I think is the best jockey.

I knew Espinoza donated part of is winnings (10%) on every race. He donated all of his earnings in the Belmont Stakes to charity.

Baffert, btw, donated a bunch of his 'earnings' to charity.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

Wow been a member for like 10 years and didn't know there was a horse racing thread!

I used to go with my dad to Golden Gate Fields (and sometimes Bay Meadows/Fair circuit) when I was growing up and remember seeing Espinoza and Art Sherman.

Happy to finally see a triple crown winner (technically I was alive for Affirmed but I was not even a year old) as there has been so much talk about making it shorter. Now that can stop, bad enough we don't have Graded races beyond 1 1/2 on dirt (barely a handful on grass) anymore. It would be nice if the horse raced as a 4 year old, but I know the horse is too valuable for them to risk it - not when they can make at least $15 mil a year breeding him.

Guessing the Haskell (since its in NJ where Zayat lives) is next. Though Del Mar is pitching the Pacific Classic with a $5 million bonus to win it & the BC Classic. http://www.10news.com/news/local-tra...oah-to-del-mar

Sports Illustrated's cover for Jun 16th issue has AP - http://www.si.com/more-sports/photos...-covers-2015/3

Also Vogue will have pictures of AP in its Aug issue.

Glad you joined in.

What many have forgotten or knew is that Northern Dancer was not only a great sire - but also was a fair race horse.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

Thanks!

Is Xpressbet making a rival network after Stronach sold HRTV to TVG in Feb? I saw a job listing for studio production staff for what sounded a lot like HRTV until it said startup:

Digital media startup backed by one of the largest horse racing and wagering companies in the US.[...] Our studios are located at beautiful Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.
Oh lookie: http://www.stronachmedia.com/

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

I don't believe AP will make a great sire. Small horses (with the exception of Northern Dancer) don't generally make great sires.

I believe Smarty Jones has a $3,000.00 stud fee. Oops! It's now a $7,500 stud fee.

In addition: 2 of our members should be aware that Smarty Jones won the Rebel, the Arkansas Derby - and another race at Oaklawn which I can't remember which one.

Re: Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings -- 2012 and beyond

AP is 16.1 - That's pretty avg height for a TB.

It would be long odds he'd be worth the $150k+ stud fee. Few stallion are - Frankel and his sire Galileo are the most recent ones I can think of that turned out really well.

If AP's progeny revert to his damline in being sprinters or continues the sireline of being fairly speedy routers, that's good for sales at least, since they reward speed/early development. Of course there's always the danger the horse is sterile or have low fertility.

Interestingly, he had been listed as a ridgling as 2 yr old [though now as a colt I think] - the other AP -Indy did alright as one.

Smarty won the Southwest Stakes.

Looks like AP's old stablemate Mr. Z won the Ohio Derby today beating Tencendur and Divining Rod by a head.

California Chrome(s) next race is going to be The Arlington Million - supposedly.

Is the surface of Arlington mark - synthetic?

Still a mess. Tonalist can't win the Suburban. Very close. I have no idea who the best older horse is.

Speightster was great in the Dwyer. Expect to see him in the BC Sprint.

A very solid 108 for Effinex in the Suburban. 104 for Speightster in the Dwyer.
