Who knows. But I'd sure like to see him play in the same offense for 2 consecutive years.

As a Charger fan and an original Eli hater, even I have to admit he's got to be considered among the top 5 QB's in the league.....maybe top 6.

Alex Smith does not need to "carry" the 49ers. All he needs to do is manage the game, which he does fairly well. Don't ask him to come back down 2 TD's all the time. Obviously he can (see the NO playoff game), but I don't think he would do it on a regular basis. He was telegraphing his passes to Davis yesterday, but he simply needs more weapons. Crabtree is nice, but he still needs a big play maker at the wide receiver position so teams can't double Vernon Davis. Hitting Gore out of the backfield worked well for him as well. With just one more piece (a play making wideout), he'll have 3 weapons and SF will be a force in the league for a good enough window to win a championship I believe.

Crabtree might be a decent #2, but they need to go out and get a stud go-to WR.

I really thought Maclin and Crabtree were going to be big-time players coming out during the 2009 draft.

Edit: I just checked Maclin's career stats, and they are pretty good. He definitely plays in a more high powered passing attack system..

Re: 2011 NFL Playoffs Thread -- Conference Championships -- 01/22/2012

The Giants could win the SB and be called SB champs but I would have them as maybe the 5th best team in the NFL. Being hot at the right time of the year doesn't make them the best team of the season in my book. Without a serious choke job by one person on the 49ers Eli and his team are sitting at home eating nachos and saying "Ahh shucks" a lot on SB Sunday. JMO, but a 9-7 team considered the best team in the NFL this season is a joke.

Re: 2011 NFL Playoffs Thread -- Conference Championships -- 01/22/2012

I don't get all the Eli praise. 60 pass attempts and he scores, what, 10 point that weren't gifts from Kyle Williams? Other than the punt turnovers I don't think the Giants made it onto the 49er's side of the field after halftime. Plus he had multiple passes that weren't picks not because they weren't bad throws but because they were so bad that defenders were running into each other trying to make the int.

I'm not saying he was horrible, and it was a tough game to be sure, but it certainly wasn't a great outing.

Alex Smith will be back. Harbaugh likes him.

Honestly, after this past season, I am curious as to see if he can best his umbers which were all career highs.

nope it wasnt... hell, he could have done better, but thats what the 49er defense is all about.. they played awesome defense..

I guess people just looked to Eli as how he handled the pressure and getting punished all game... i mean, you have to cut the guy some credit.. i said it before... most guys who get crushed like that either fumble or come out with an injury but my goofy bastard didnt...

Pretty much. Manage the game, don't be stupid with the ball. Those guys won Super Bowls, Smith can too. Harbaugh I'm sure wants to draft and mold a QB in his system, but Smith is good enough to carry the torch for now.

Jerry Jones: Eli is the biggest difference between Giants and Cowboys
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 23, 2012, 7:08 PM EST

Cowboys owner/coach/spokesman/G.M. Jerry Jones was asked Monday at the Senior Bowl about the success of the Super Bowl-bound New York Giants.

In Jones’ estimation, the biggest difference between the Cowboys and the Giants is simple: Eli Manning. Ouch.

Calvin Watkins on ESPNDallas.com reports that Jones subsequently offered praise for Tony Romo, possibly in an effort to put the toothpaste back in the tube. But the point seems clear. Jones essentially said that the 31-year-old quarterback of his division rival has a big edge over his own 31-year-old quarterback.

Perhaps this was Jones’ way of sending a message to Romo that he won’t be coddled any more. Even if that’s true, I fully expect Jones to later “clarify” these words and make a show of support for Romo.

It’s also worth wondering if Jones takes an overly simplistic view of what separates the two teams. We’d give the Giants the edge in terms of their pass rush, their coaching continuity, and their ability to make the right front-office decisions.
ouch... Romo isnt bad whatsoever but this is Jerrah we are talking about here

Yeah, he's out of touch with his own team (still). Jerry needs to take a look at building a reliable defense, that's where NY and Dallas differ this year. (actually needs to allow someone ELSE take a look)

For the record, I don't believe that the Giants targeted Williams because of his concussion history like it's being reported. They simply took advantage of someone that doesn't normally return kicks, on a wet field with a slippery ball, and it worked.

Harbaugh should have had someone else like Hunter return kicks after Williams made the first error, and possibly even earlier when he unnecessarily dove for a couple of balls.

So you think the Giants players lied when they said that's what they did?

I'd say the ownership situation is the biggest difference between the Giants and the Cowboys.

You're right. The one that recovered both, and the one that had the key hit.

Sad.

I don't get it, neither fumble was caused by any sort of devastating blow were they?

The Mara and Tisch family keep their mouths shut most of the time. That gets big kudos from me as a fan.

They are not very reactionary, because if they were Coughlin would have been fired a couple of years ago probably.
