Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

I love the shakeup by having someone unexpected win.

Figured Hacksaw would be in it, remember he won the first one way back when.

FIVE mostly-retired guys, two non-wrestlers, and a woman. Deep roster, yo.
Heck, at least we didn't get Hornswoggle!

Finally, Karma squeezed out her rugrat so she can start killing bitches dead again.

Big matches (Cena/Kane) should never EVER have a non-ending on a PPV. Want to further the feud? That's what TV is for, not a show that people are shelling out $50 to watch.

So
Miz was the IRONMAN
Rhodes was the ELIMINATOR
Kofi was the SPIDERMAN

Which guy was the QUICKDRAW? (least time in the ring)

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

Show wasn't the best ever, but I did enjoy myself watching the Rumble match itself. I was a bit surprised with Sheamus getting the win, but I am alright with it. I enjoyed Ricardo's ghetto version of the ADR entrance. Miz, Rhodes and Ziggler all looked pretty solid. I'm not really a Kofi fan, but his hand-walking spot was pretty cool.

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

Terrible Rumble.

So it looks like Ziggler and Big Show were the only two undercard wrestlers to appear in the Rumble.

I feel like if they were going to advertise everybody being in play they should have had everybody from the undercard included. Its not like there wasn't garbage thrown in that couldn't have been scrapped.

There's also no chance Bryan leaves Elimination Chamber with the belt.

OK, that Rumble sucked. I smirked somewhat at the Socko/Cobra stand-off (I dunno why..) and Kofi's handstand thingamajig was cool but other than that zzzzzz.

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

Wasn't a big fan of the Rumble.

Ricardo's entrance was probably the funniest part but funniest doesn't make it good. This year's actual "Rumble" seemed to lack the star quality in it. Too many guys in it that just didn't stand an actual chance.

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

Wasn't a fan of the Rumble at all. It's great to know the WWE doesn't even take it seriously anymore. How many comedy/legends/jobber entries did we have? This is for the "main event" of WrestleMania, not a stupid battle royal on Raw/Smackdown. It's pretty sad how weak the current roster is these days. By the time Michael Cole came out, I was expecting a camera man or Justin Roberts to come in next.

Sure, my friends and I all threw in $20 in a pot to draw entries, and we had a ton of laughs and mark out moments, so I guess that's all that counts, right? Having fun watching. But had we not had money on the line...

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

The Rumble was fun to watch, but ultimately forgettable. I liked a good bit of the comedy/legends stuff while it was happening (dueling Socko v Cobra was the shit!), but that doesn't really lend any gravitas to the Rumble match itself. I recently watched the 2007 Rumble, and that Rumble felt like the people were fighting over serious stakes. This was a pretty lackluster start to the road to Wrestlemania.

I tell you what was a bit disappointing -- the fact that Jericho didn't do anything special. His promo on Raw lead me to believe that there was going to be something interesting with him (even if he didn't win). If he had just said that he was going to win the Rumble, I would have been fine, but his promo seemed to hint at something.

This Rumble is making me feel old. I remember at the end of WCW when people were getting all excited for these old over the hill wrestlers, and I was like those cats are played, where's Goldberg! Now, here are some of "my guys" from the era of wrestling I loved the most, Road Dogg and Mick Foley, as legends -- and looking like Legends too (read: old and busted) and not still looking like they have gas in the tank like Booker T, Jericho, or Taker. I'm getting old.

The thing I enjoyed most on this show surprisingly was the Show, Bryan, Henry match. I just really enjoy those guys together. Cold be because it was early and I was primed for the show, but either way, I like this program a lot.

Sheamus is an interesting pick for Mania. That really throws a monkey wrench into my thoughts for what is going to happen at Mania. I do agree that Sheamus v Bryan does very little for me at the moment.

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

I was 4th row on the floor camera side. Down there people were going crazy for Sheamus winning. Shocked, but still he got quite a reaction. If the crowd shit on the finish it was very hard to tell from where I was. Not the best, probably not worth $300, but a fun night altogether.

The only thing that would make things interesting would be if Sheamus picks to have a shot at Undertaker's streak.

As I've read someone else speculate, Jericho's new gimmick may be to be the wrestling cliché guy.

Extravagant hype videos prior to a return, eliciting cheap pops from the fans, promising his match will change the world...

That might be right when you realize that his return video had nothing at all to do with his character.

I knew the current WWE roster was weak but had no idea that it was this bad. Take away the four announcers, jobbers, old timers and a woman, you have only about ten guys who had a legitimate shot at winning the Rumble. The ones highlighted had no shot at winning at all.

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

While I would agree that this year's Rumble was lacking in star power, it's certainly not the first Rumble to have that distinction. I watched the '97 rumble yesterday, which featured 4 luchadors, Fake Kane and Fake Razor, as well as Lawler doing the announcer as entrant gimmick far better than it was done this time around.

This year, it felt like the planning came together at the last minute, which is never good for the Rumble. Picking Sheamus basically means that Bryan will lose at the Chamber, since I can't see them making a match between those two as a big match since it wasn't even good enough to make the card last year.

I do wish they'd get away from making the entries so blatantly worked. Miz starts with Riley, then Truth comes in? Rhodes is followed by Gabriel who is feuding with him right now? Mahal and Khali come in back to back? The Rumble works so much better when it comes off as legit.

I was disappointed that Kane wasn't in the Rumble. Jacobs has 15 Rumble appearances, the most by a wide margin (13 as Kane).

Overall, this was a marginal PPV. But the Royal Rumble is supposed to be the second biggest show of the year for WWE. To that standard, this show fell well short. I hope the Chamber makes up for it.

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

I know they have the luxury of not having to build WM around the world title matches this year but Sheamus against practically anybody is a snoozer as of right now. Maybe somehow UT gets the title between now and WM or Barrett gets the title. I'm just not seeing how they make me care about a Sheamus match though.

Re: The January '12 Pro Wrestling Thread: Genesis/Royal Rumble

WHY WWE WENT WITH SHEAMUS AT THE 2012 ROYAL RUMBLE WINNER
by Mike Johnson @ 10:14 AM on 1/30/2012

WWE went with Sheamus as the Royal Rumble last week. The initial plan appeared to have been Chris Jericho winning.
According to those I spoke to in the company, the decision was made to go with Sheamus to throw a curve ball at fans that were expecting Jericho while Michael Cole's line about what title would Sheamus choose to go after was designed to lead fans to believe that a massive shake-up in the storylines just went down.

There have been plans to push Sheamus super-hard over the last year, as we've talked about in the Elite section of PWInsider.com, as the company loves the way he presents himself and feels he's grown as a performer since he's debuted with the company.

In an interesting twist, a number of readers pointed out that if its Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus at Wrestlemania in April, that main event bout will come a year after their match for the U.S. title at Wrestlemania 27 was pulled from the PPV for timing purposes and made a dark match.

So not storyline driven but as a swerve to the smarks? WCW booking at it's finest.

What didn't help is that the three guys that were were most likely to actually entertain the crowd came out in the very last three spots.
