Terrible news. Awful at any school, but on the tenth anniversary of the Men's team crash, it's even tougher to take.

Will be interesting to see the accident report. That type of plane is pretty small for 4 adults. I can't imagine cramming a full-sized adult in that backseat for any substantial trip. (The 180s get larger by about 5in in added useable interior space in the early 1970s). It would be very easy for the plane to be overweight and result in some negative performance characteristics at takeoff. Cherokees are know for easy flight characteristics, but if you get them seriously overweight, there is simply not enough HP to compensate.
The plane was a 1964 Piper Cherokee 180. Typical useful load with full fuel load is only about 800lbs. Also, at 82 y/o for the pilot, it could have been a simple case of pilot incapacity.
Anyway, thoughts and prayers to all involved. Pilots hate to hear about this type of thing. Especially in birds similar to what they commonly use.

You can bet that a certain wealthy OSU booster wouldn't let any member of their football program travel like that.
