And I'm glad you didn't feel pressure to maintain the subheaders. I didn't intend for that to be a daily thing.

Saw the play at the plate highlight from the Rays-Tigers game yesterday. So does Delmon Young just aim for the head every time even if he's out by a mile? Weak.

That was pretty bad. I can imagine Hawk calling for a hit on one of Young's family members for that one.

Well at least the time he did it to Pierzynski the play was going to be close. This one was pointless.

Yeah. I'd say it looks more dumb than evil again, but I don't know that that is any better.

Giants got the claim on Bell and it's looking like the Sox got Thome. It'll be odd if he goes there, Kubel goes to the Indians (with Young to Detroit).

It'll be interesting to see those moves happen but Detroit pretty much has the division tied up now. I have absolutely no illusions about the White Sox making a run - it's just not going to happen with this team. They seem to be allergic to a winning percentage > .500.

Yeah, Detroit pummeling Cleveland last weekend really killed the race.

In games where the starting pitcher went 7IP or more, and gave of 2 ER or less

the Giants as a team are 22 for 42, a winning percentage of .523
the Phillies as a team are 43 for 51, a winning percentage of .843

fucking Giants

but hey at least we claimed Heath Bell off of waivers. He's probably a better hitter than that fucking Aaron Rowand asshole

Why did SD put Bell on waivers in the first place? It's not like they were on the verge of contending at the deadline. Why not trade him and get some value?

They didn't trade him before, because they were asking nothing short ridiculous talent back for him. No trade was made because the Pads felt nobody offered anything of fair value. Can you blame teams, though? Bell said he loves SD and will take a hometown discount to come back there. Once that quote was out there publicly, teams shied away from any trade for him. Why would any team give up a shit ton of prospects for a guy they have virtually no chance in resigning once he becomes a FA a the end of the season?

I think the reason he was claimed now is that there's 1 month left of the season. There's no risk for SF because they won't have to give up anything of major value, if a trade is done.

FWIW, many top tier players are place on waivers. It's just that it was never reported like it is now with this day of twitter and such.

Re: MLB Wednesday, August 24, 2011

And there's the kicker, because his arbitration will be somewhere in the $10-11m figure. For a team expecting to spend $50m next season giving $11 of that to a 34-year-old closer who has had more than a few white-knuckle outings is not in their plans. Same reason why they're hesitant to make a deal, especially since they have who looks to be his heir apparent Brad Brach in AAA Tucson. But Brach doesnt have any MLB experience so you cant bank on that.

Im thinking they were hoping he'd go through unclaimed (ha, good luck!) and take any decent deal. If thats their mentality I wouldnt be surprised if they just dealt him in the offseason. He's a great clubhouse guy, good for the city and a fan favorite but facts are still facts. In a way though it seems like we go through this every year. Peavy, A-Gon and now Bell. They all make business sense but I wouldn't be rushing out to a buy a jersey of whoever becomes the next fan favorite here.

Bell is a free agent in the offseason though; Moorad has also said that they are upping the payroll next season so who knows if Bell is really out of their plans.

that sucks. Daniel Hudson was 1 out from a CG shutout, then proceeds to give up 2 solo HRs. Got yanked and Putz came in to record the save on 3 pitches.

Btw haraold Reynolds is brain damaged.
Did anyone hear his complaint ablutions the extra chain link fence in center field at Arlington?
He didn't understand why it's a home run when it hits that fence. A fence that is behind the wall, separated from the wall and is only there so people don't fall off the grass. Dope.

Re: MLB Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Yankees put in a claim on Carlos Pena. Not sure if there'll be a trade but the Cubs could just let him walk too. He's due like half his salary ($5MM) in January, and I think I read they wouldn't get a pick for him anyway. The only benefit in keeping him would be if you want to bring him back next year, and you still could depending on the circumstances.

I've lived outside of Baltimore for almost my entire life and he's always been there. I'm really sad over this.

Re: MLB Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Way to sack up and take the series against the A's at home Yankees. That was a big win today to keep the pressure on the Red Sox.

It's like they know the Red Sox series is coming up so they decide to just start losing now.

But then again the wild card might not be the worst option. It might be better to play the Rangers in a 5 game series than the Tigers. The Rangers are better but whoever ends up playing the Tigers might have to face Verlander twice which is deadly in a 5 game series.

Damn Giants. If they had scored more for Timmy this year, he would be a serious CY candidate. They scored 0 runs for him in about a 1/3 of his starts this year. He's been spectacular since the All-star break.
