Yankees have series against Oakland and Baltimore before heading to Boston. Now is a good time to build on that division lead before getting swept in Boston.

Baltimore will build up some nice momentum here in MN, don't count them out yet.

Wow. Dbacks trade Kelly Johnson to TOR for 2B Aaron Hill and SS Shaun McDonald. Looks to be a fresh start for both Johnson and Hill, who have struggled mightily.

C'mon now, it's Johnny Mac! Gonna miss him. Always played hard when called upon. One of the best fielding players the Jays have had no matter where they put him.

I hope Hill can recapture the magic he had a couple seasons ago. Best of luck to both with their new team.

Re: MLB Tuesday, August 23, 2011 "Not so Wild Card Edition"

Memo to Girardi: bringing in a lefty arm to face a weak hitting lefty at the bottom of the order is just about as dumb a move as you can make. They have this thing called "pinch-hitting".... so the A's get to take their worst hitter on the team and plug in a better hitting righty with men on 2nd and 3rd... base hit, game effectively over.

He is just so robotic with his moves.. lefty batter, bring in lefty. He can't see what's going to happen next? (like pinchitting a better right handed hitter) It's the same thing with sac bunting and intentional walks, he doesn't consider the hitters involved or the situation.

Ron Washington is probably close to as bad... bases loaded down 5 runs, starting pitcher has just walked in a run... no outs, 3-0 count (pitcher has now thrown 7 straight balls).... sure swing away!

Re: MLB Tuesday, August 23, 2011 "Not so Wild Card Edition"

And with the Yankees coming back to score 5 runs and losing the game 6-5, it makes the absurdly idiotic bullpen decision look even that much better. Another game "Girardi'd"

It got better in the 9th inning: Hottest hitter at the plate, 2 on down 2 in the 9th.... of course you bunt!

Sure the guy is 3 for 3 with a walk... but that's just 1 game
Sure he has 8 multihit games in the last 11 games.. that could be luck
Sure he's hitting .500 over his last 11 games... but that's just a hot streak
Sure he's hitting nearly .400 in August...
Sure he's now hitting .295 on the season....

When the binder says bunt, you bunt! READ: When you have the opportunity to give away an out, you have to seize that opportunity, regardless of situation.

Re: MLB Tuesday, August 23, 2011 "Not so Wild Card Edition"

Sorry can't agree here. Yes he's hot but you're down by two runs with no outs and batting behind him are two of the top 3 RBI guys in baseball. Of course you put two runners in scoring position for them. If Jeter hits into a DP there the game is over. Bunting is the obvious call that any manager would make.

If you need to blame the loss on Girardi, blame it on how he sets up his lineup. It should be Gardner, Jeter, Cano, Grandy the Tex. I like Tex as much as the next guy but at .250 he should be batting 5th with Arod out.

Damn Beltran and his lame wrist should have pinch hit for Rowand. Everyone knows Rowand can't do shit.

Burned me in 2006 fantasy baseball. Thought he would be a great sleeper pick. Hated him ever since...haha

If he hits into a DP there... you still have the next batter up representing the tying run - the game would not have been over. You don't manage via fear of the double play... Jeter "the double play machine" has grounded into all of how many double plays this year?

Spoiler:
Nine. That means there are 'only' 93 players who have grounded into more double plays...

If it's a weak hitter I get it, but Jeter now is hitting .295 on the season and is hitting well over .300 for a long period of time (several months) and .400 for nearly a month now. This is the classic binder maneuver and eliminate all context of who's up and how that person is hitting.

This situation is identical to bunting down 1 with a guy on 1st (since the runner on 2nd is meaningless in a 2 run game)... it's a marginal play that makes sense if the batter is a marginal hitter (under normal situations the numbers actually work out to the bunt being slightly worse in terms of run expectancy). When it's a guy second on the team in batting average and your hottest hitter, I would consider it a poor move. If the Yankees were down 1 with a runner on 1st, you'd want Jeter to bunt there? And view that as the obvious call?

And I agree Tex should be dropped in the order (with right handed pitchers). He's hitting ~.225 lefty and ~.300 righty. It's ridiculous to keep hitting him 3rd (or 4th) with a righty on the mound. That said, he still gets on base a ton (~.350 OBP despite the .250 average) which is pretty much the same OBP as Cano. So having him hit in front of ARod, Cano and Swisher is not a terrible thing as he will still get on base despite the average.

I think once Rowand and Zito's contacts end, Giants fans will finally be able to breathe a sign of relief.

We'll be freeing up a lot of money as well as ending the (last of) shitty contracts of management past.

I agree it's the same scenario and holding all else equal, I would still have Jeter bunt. If Girardi has Jeter hit there and Jeter makes an out (or outs) and doesn't advance the runners then I'm thinking that's a bad call. If Jeter gets a hit then I'm thinking it's a ballsy call that worked out for him. Jeter bunting (who does this at a close to 100% success rate) was the safe call.

Phils fans were sorry to see Rowand go. He was pretty productive. But I guess the Giants paid too much and counted on him too much.

Re: MLB Tuesday, August 23, 2011 "Not so Wild Card Edition"

While Ramirez (Giants) blew the tie, I'm going to put most of the blame on the rookie catcher Hector Sanchez.

He kept setting up his glove way too early. So while Ramirez was checking the runner with his peripheral vision, Hector would setup his glove and look like a statue for 3-4 seconds waiting for the ball. And of course, I bet the SD batters could see his glove placement with their peripheral vision. And he always called pitches in the same spot.
