Those were some costly and unnecessary losses in Washington.

Why did the Twins put Thome on waivers? Damn, he'd look good back in pinstripes.

He's pointless on the team right now. It's just too bad he didn't break 600 before the trading deadline so they could have worked out a better deal. Now they are just being nice and letting him have a chance to play for a contender. I can't imagine he would make it to either NY or Philly though having to go through that many teams (Both Chicago and Cleveland would probably claim him I would think).

Kubel will be a good pickup for someone.

They didn't trade him before the deadline so he could break 600 as a Twin? That's pretty....dumb.

Yep (it was their main marketing strategy this season). And it paid off for them with him doing it on the road.

Eh, I don't think it's that dumb. They could only realistically trade him to an AL team because they would have gotten the most value for him. And who could they realistically get? Certainly no where close to a top prospect.

Now they can get some extra cash by selling some seats this season that they can use towards getting a player in the offseason.

I din't really have a problem with it, but I wonder if it really made any difference in ticket sales. Outdoor baseball at the new field would probably have filled the seats this season anyway.

Dbacks are falling apart. Giants have 18 of their next 23 at home. Beltran will be back soon. This is setting up pretty good for the Giants to win the West again.

Doesn't every team with trade-able players put all those players on waivers?

I don't think they're going to recapture last year's magic. Still think they'll win the West, but will not make it out of the NLDS.

Then again if they win their division they will play a 5 game series against Phillies in the first round...so who knows.

Pretty much. I roll my eyes at the stories about who got put on waivers. Just tell me if anyone got claimed--that's a story.

Re: MLB Monday, August 22, 2011, "Everyone's Pulling Away Except in the NL West" edit

In a bizarre episode, a moth got stuck deep in Holliday's right ear, forcing the St. Louis Cardinals star to walk off the field while the Los Angeles Dodgers batted in the eighth inning Monday night.

With two outs, Holliday called time in left field and started toward the dugout holding his ear. Cardinals trainer Barry Weinberg met Holliday and tried to help.

"He had a moth fly into his ear, deep into his ear. I don't even know what happened to it," St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said moments after his team's 2-1 loss.

Team spokesman Brian Bartow said Holliday was taken into a dark room and trainers put a light by his ear, trying to lure the insect out. That didn't work, so they used a utensil to get the moth, which was still alive, out of Holliday's ear.
