Re: MLB Friday, August 19, 2011

Yankees pass the Sox in run scored and are 3rd in the AL in runs allowed (just slightly behind TB and LA)... they're crushing teams in run differential.

Yet I still can't find a Yankee fan that thinks this is a World Series team. I just don't think they have "it" this year. That could change with 6 weeks left in the season though. Some wins against the Red Sox would certainly be nice.

The Twins were hitting CC pretty good to start the game, but just couldn't get it done. Nice to see Morneau show a little pop, even if it was foul.

Signs of intelligence from the Ricketts, I am surprised.

His departure was long over do.

Re: MLB Friday, August 19, 2011

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised and kind of not. Apparently he was notified on July 22 but agreed to stay through the trade deadline (great job there!) and the signing of draft picks. His final record was over .500, 749-748, and how many Cubs GMs can say that? (Wonder if that had anything to do with the timing.)

Good to have a change. The team is terrible and unwatchable, the minors are thin, and there are still some contracts that hobble the organization like a Soriano hamstring. Supposedly the record this year was the final straw, but it's more than wins and losses. They lose games with terrible fielding and clutch-hitting, among other issues (including injuries).

Interesting reading some of the articles. They say that the organization's draft budget has been in the bottom third of baseball before opening the checkbook this year, and personnel claims that they've sometimes drafted lesser players because of that.

But I'm grateful for some exciting years of Cubs baseball. Who knows what would have happened had they closed the deal in 2003.

The Cardinals defense and bullpen continue to spell doom on a regular basis.

Yeah, they spent like 11 million this year. I just don't get why the Cubs didn't follow the Red Sox model and overpay for the prospects who fall because of a high price tag.

I was kinda hoping they'd keep him around so he could sign some more players to bad contracts.

Well the new GM does have a few trade chips in Sean Marshall and Marmol. It would have been a better move to fire him in May or early June so they could have taken advantage of the seller's trade market this year.

1-0 in the post Hendry era.

Just kidding, obviously this is still the team he built.

I too was surprised by the Cubs sudden spending spree in the draft.

Hopefully they get a GM with some success instead of a first timer.

Because overpaying is frowned upon by the Commissioner and over the past few years, the former owners of the Cubs, the Tribune Company, has had issues with debt ratios so they basically couldn't piss off MLB because of their position.

In comparison, the Red Sox aren't building a new stadium, don't need MLB to approve anything because they aren't selling or are in a negative financial situation so they can do whatever the hell they want under the rules like overpaying draft picks, signing amateur Japanese talent(which is forbidden under a gentleman's agreement with Japan's NPB league) or interfering with a sale of a player to Japan(the case of Kevin Millar) amongst other examples.

Re: MLB Friday, August 19, 2011

The Cubs are stuck with many contracts like Soriano but do have a fair amount of $$ coming off the books (like Silva) so they're not in as bad shape as they have been.

They just set a record by giving the most $ ($2.5MM) to someone selected below the third round. This was actually a 14th-rounder who supposedly had first-round talent but wasn't drafted because he was going to go to college and play football as well (as a kicker--insert kicker joke here).

Other examples including the Dice-K posting fee. That's why I've grown to hate the Red Sox (used to be my second-favorite team), because they do all this stuff but still complain about the Yankees.

Yeah, it's getting pretty ridiculous; another thing they just did was they signed Andrew Miller to a deal that has a high vesting option year should they send him to the minors and someone claims him. Basically, with his consent, they are effectively blocking any team from claiming him like they would any other "AAAA" player.

Even with the avalanche of injuries, SF/HOU is not going how I thought so far

That 2 run lead currently might as well be a 10 run lead. Giants need to take advantage of their series against Houston and Arizona playing Atlanta.

I'm just getting tired of Bochy's constant tinkering of the lineup. I know the Giants are plagued with injuries, but we are in August and he's still trying to strike gold with some random mash-up of players.

At least the DBacks can put up runs. Also to their credit, they were playing a solid team tonight (Braves). The Giants? We played a team with a .323 Win Percentage so this far this season and let them blank us out.

I know Houston put up a bunch against Arizona a couple weeks ago, but it's just so frustrating the Giants can't take advantage of these Tomato-Can Teams.

It's also frustrating to see Giants pitchers having to play a completely flawless game or having no chance to win. There was a game recently where Timmy gave up 1 run (a game they lost) and blamed himself for the loss.

2003 was luck to make it that far.
2008 Cubs had the best record in N.L. and top in offense team stats.
That happened cause they played most of their games within the weak division. So they were able to pad their stats and then when it came to playing the Dodgers they got spanked in the playoffs.
Jim Hendry was terriable and I said years ago.
Even Steve Stone years ago said those no-trade contracts were going to come back and hurt the Cubs.
