Fantasy Football Talk 2011

Figured I'd start this since some people may have already drafted in non-DVDTalk leagues.

I drafted for an auction league last week, and with the way players are dropping like flies, I'll consider my team a success if they all make it through the pre-season.

The one thing I need to work on is managing my budget during an auction draft. I had $14 left to spend at auction closing, which pisses me off, because I could have had Mendenhall instead of Greene, or Andre Johnson instead of Vincent Jackson.

Yeah, the trick for auctions is to get the one or two players you really want because you won't get a shot at them again.

Those big names were left at the end of your auction? Damn. At the end of my auction each year, it's basically scraps.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2011

I was thinking he meant he could have spent $14 more to get those guys earlier in the auction because that's how much cash he had burning a hole in his pocket at the end

That makes sense. Yeah, that happens. The key in an auction (particularly if it's not a keeper league) is to basically use all of your cap.

I'd never heard of Riley Cooper till I saw him catch a TD last night and thought of this thread

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2011

So what are the top picks looking like? Seems like after Peterson, Johnson, Charles and Foster, the picks get a little jumbled up. McFadden at 5? That seems really risky to me, as well as Vick in round 1. The Ricky Wililams pickup screws Ray Rice for GL carries, and there's a whole lot of RB platooning going on...

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2011

I'm thinking you'll need to tap into the FB market in order to fill the RB slots up. Your league will be the first one ever were every teams bench will be made up solely of QB's and TE's.

If you don't get one of the 4 guys already mentioned, Take FB Owen Schmitt from the Eagles as a sleeper RB. He produced a whopping 20.20 points last season! That should be enough to put you over the edge.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2011

Ray Rice has always been screwed for GL carries, that is nothing new so I don't think that should be a big factor.

I've got the first pick in a 12 team standard scoring ESPN league. Who would you take? I'm leaning toward Peterson due to his consistency over the years.

I don't think you can go wrong with AP.

I'd go with AP as well. I can't see Foster having as good a year as he had last season.

With that being said, expect Foster to break all sorts of fantasy records this year since I said to go with AP.

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2011

AP is a solid choice. Foster has only done it for one year, and Vick is a risk.

As far as top choices go, I haven't yet looked into the various rankings, but I hope my man Michael Turner is in the mix there. I don't see a lot of downside to him other than natural wear and tear and the Falcons throwing the ball more this year. I see loosening up the field as a good thing.

My buddy and I had a lot of debate about Turner vs. MJD last year because he had his choice picking right before me, and after talking up Turner he ended up taking MJD. I think they were fairly comparable last year, but I'm feeling good about Turner this year (we have a keeper system in which we can keep players for two years then they go back into the pool).

Do mulattos count in a whites-only league, or are they only available in a mixed-race league?

I've heard rumbling that Rice is moving up due to his new blocking fullback (Vonta Leach, who did his job blocking for Foster in HOU last year). And the coach talking about how Rice was the GL guy ... coach wouldn't lie, would he? SOMEONE will take Vick in the top 5 of many drafts. I just don't think that someone will be me (except in my "start 2 QB" league, if I have the chance).

With standard scoring ... yeah, I think AP would be mine. I think the saying is that you can't win a league in the first round ... but you can sure lose it there. AP is safest, and safe is good in round 1. In PPR though, I think I'd jump on Foster (barring any bad injury news). CJ is making things tough with his holdout - otherwise, he'd round out my top 3.

I have #3 in a DVDTalk league, so I have to think about these rankings. Though, in a way, picking 3 or 4 is easier than 1st. The first two managers will take a lot of the decision-making out of your hands in round 1. For some reason, my least successful teams have come when I had an early pick. I'm still kicking myself over a 2006 league when I had #1. Passing on LT2 (2300+ total yards, 31 TDs) ... taking Shaun Alexander (944 total yards, 7 TDs).

Re: Fantasy Football Talk 2011

Only 5 RBs who scored 18 TDs or more have scored that many the following season....

As long as their skin is white it counts.. so Michael Jackson would have counted!

As for AP or Foster... I say flip a coin. Peterson is a safe bet, but I don't think forster will let you down either. He doesn't have the miles on the body like LT and Alexander did after they had their monster years.

In 2004, I had the #2 pick and selected Portis (1318 rushing yards, 8 total TDs) instead of Alexander (1696 yards, 20 total TDs). And since it was a two-year keeper system, it was even worse in 2005 (Portis 1516 yards and 12 TDs, Alexander 1880 yards and 28 TDs). So I can understand why you made the pick in 2006, though the Seahawks had just lost Hutch that year--that obviously ended up having a big effect on Alexander.

For my draft in 2004, I thought Portis was going to thrive by moving to the Gibbs power-running system, but I was also influenced by the fact that I just thought Alexander was a selfish jerk. One of the few times I've let personal feelings dictate my team strategy, and you can see how it worked out.
