Yankees going into Boston as the hottest team in the AL and tied for first in the East...

...which all but guarantees that they'll get swept.

Mariners farm out OF Greg Halman (32 K and 2 BB in 87 AB) and release Cust. Sounds like the AAA CF pickup from the Dodgers in the Bedard deal, Trayvon Robinson, will be called up.

Tony Campana's ITP was his first HR in the majors or minors.

Cubs win their sixth in a row. Building on last year, Quade seems to be a master of inspiring his team to perform after they're hopelessly out of the race.

I foresee another sweep of the White Sox. The Twins have absolutely owned them lately. If they drop all 3 games this weekend, they're finished. Williams will probably unload some guys soon.

Sadly because of the stupid wildcard, this series is really irrelevant because both the Yanks/Sox will make the playoffs the same way the Yanks/Rays did last year.

Which will probably set-up another anti-climatic last week for the division in late September as the Yanks and Sox will care more about setting up their rotation for the playoffs then winning the division. And I can't blame them for doing it.

Agreed. Something needs to be done about the wildcard. I kind of like the idea of adding another wildcard team and then the 2 wildcard teams play a one game playoff to get to the Divisional Series. Landing the wildcard will not be something you want if that happens. Teams will fight hard for the division.

Phils are beating on the Giants tonight. After Pence's homer run it's 9-2 in the seventh.

Victorino got hit in the small of the back by a pitch. Starts to approach the mound, Whiteside got in front of him, then Polanco runs in from basepath to defend Victorino, Whiteside tackles him...chaos ensues.

As a Giants fan, the donnybrook made what was a lame game pretty hilarious.

Then again I'd rather them win games (they've lost the last 7 of 8?) than spend their time getting into all that kinda bullshit.

He gets hit in the back and wants to start a fight? And people were complaining about the Cardinals being crybabies after the way they reacted to Pujols getting hit right where he just came back from having a broken arm? Give me a break!

Re: MLB Friday, August 5, 2011

This happened after the score got to 8-2. The Phils got runners on the corners, then Voctorino gets hit right in the small of the back with a straight fastball.
Shane flips his bat and walks towards the pitcher then stops.
Whiteside jumps in front of Victorino, literally and continues jumping up and down looking for someone to start with. Polanco makes his way into the area and whiteside tackles Polanco below the waste and tries to take him to the ground.

After that its mostly just a group hug.

Probably goes back to last year. Sanchez hit Utley twice including the last game of the series last season.
Looked like a message pitch to me since they were down 8-2 and the pitch was directly to his lower back and a straight fastball.

The only thing that will control these bench clearing fights is an auto suspension to the first person off the bench and maybe the manager too, just like hockey.

Even as a Giants fan, I have a hard time believing it wasn't a message pitch. Whiteside popped up right away and Ramon Ramirez went towards Victorino instead of staying where he was.

Before this even happened, you had Rollins stealing 2nd after being up 8-2 and (I forgot who) swinging at a 3-0 count.

Giants can't afford any big suspensions, so it was sort of annoying to see Sandoval throwing punches and Whiteside getting all froggy. Good thing someone was holding Lincecum back from all the bullshit.

Then again it doesn't really matter who started it, in terms of the NL West the Diamondbacks are laughing at all of this being only half a game behind the Giants.

A - Pujols has been back a month now... he didn't "just get back" - although I guess that helps paint the preferred picture.

B- The retaliation was as much about the name on the jersey as the location of the pitch

I'm curious, since you seem to be buying what LaRussa is selling... who did LaRussa have hit after one of the Cardinals got hit in the head Friday (EDIT - oops meant Thursday) and had to leave the game? That would seem to be another LaRussa retaliation worthy scenario where a pitch is in a dangerous area scenario, no? (might even be worse than Pujols being hit in the hand)

Oh never mind that was Freese who got in the head, not a guy wearing #5... yeah LaRussa's all about the location of the pitch and not the guy getting hit I wonder what would have happened if that was Allbert instead of Freese.... surely the non-response would have been the same...

Re: MLB Friday, August 5, 2011

Yep, looked like Eli called for the fast one in and Ramirez knew what to do. Ramirez has looked out of sorts lately (as has our starters, bullpen, and everyone else during the last week) and you could tell the Giants were frustrated tonight. Huff looked like he copped one on the face somewhere in the scuffle. Damn Lincecum almost got into the thick of it. Too bad Pablo threw that punch as he is our hottest hitter right now and will probably get suspended.

Shame on Victorino for shoving away the umpire and tackling our 50 year old hitting coach from behind

That would be a better wildcard system, but the problem is Mr. Selig wants the wildcards teams to play a 3 game series (simply because of TV and more games = more $$$$).

Which means that the division winners would probably have around a week off if the series go 3 games, and its not good in Baseball to have too much time off. Pitchers always admit they are on a routine, and don't like having more then 6 days off between starts or they lose strength in their arm.

Dont worry Selig will fuck this sport up again!

Screw it - let the wildcards play a 3-game series. One game on Monday, and a split doubleheader (if necessary) on Tuesday. Then the ALDS begins on Wednesday. That'd force teams to want the division crown over the WC.

Pujols wasn't completely healed when he came back and there is no telling if there will still be some lasting effects from that injury. I don't think that Freese getting hit in the head was intentional in any way and I also don't think that Tony would be out headhunting for that. However, if you want to get pissy cause Braun got plunked in a rather safe spot after Pujols taking one of the hand then go right ahead. I think it is funny that people try and justify certain actions of some players and managers but yet vilify those same actions of players and a particular manager of another team. I don't always agree with Tony's decisions and there are many St. Louis fans that would rather see him go, but I also understand that he is an intense manager and has been around the game for quite some time.
