I finally saw the controversial home-plate call that ended the extra-innings Braves game. That was indeed brutal.

And the Cubs had to throw in cash?

I just looked up the deal, and the Cubs indeed threw in cash, but got a couple prospects. Nothing too exciting: an OF in his fifth professional season and still only in A (but only 21) and a P in his seventh professional season at the age of 25.

Wish Fukudome had been better. He seemed to have the bat and glove to be an impact player but never really adapted to the U.S. game other than plate discipline. Mistake made, move on.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 28, 2011

I'm still surprised to see the Ubaldo rumors continuing. I assumed it was a case like Justin Upton where the GM floats the name to see if they would get a killer deal and then when they don't get it they move on.

Apparently the Rockies asking price is coming down.... When they talked to the Yankees they apparently wanted Montero/Banuelos/Betances/Nova (3 top 50 prospects and a guy who's at least a back of the rotation starter) - now it's apparently down to any 3 of the 4 (if you believe the rumors). The Reds are still also a possibility (but don't want to give up their top prospects)

I have to wonder if the Rockies think there is something wrong with Ubaldo, his velocity is down a couple of mph's and considering his contract is extremely team friendly i don't get why they are still seemingly pursuing a trade. While they won't be contending this year it's not like that team is in full rebuilding, blow up the team mode .

Agreed. The Rockies know something about him that we don't. Either he isn't healthy or they just don't think he'll ever get back to the form he was in in the first half of last year and they're trying to sell high. Hopefully the Yankees don't bite.

Well I'm not going to pretend that I have any fond memories of the guy but this is unfortunate.

And if the Braves win the division by one game, I will be pissed.

I, on the other hand, will be pleased if the Brewers win the division by 1 game.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 28, 2011

Read this on ESPN's rumor page regarding Carlos Quentin and Adam Dunn:

Despite reports Wednesday that the Philadelphia Phillies are turning their attention to Carlos Quentin in the wake of their lack of progress on the Hunter Pence front, an NL executive who had spoken with both teams said: "I can't see that working" reports ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.

Nevertheless, there has been increasing evidence the Chicago White Sox are talking to several teams about Quentin, one of which is believed to be Atlanta. "They would move him," said an executive of one team that has been in touch with the White Sox. "I wouldn't say they're bound and determined to move him. But would they? Absolutely."

Another name we were told the White Sox have dangled, just to see what happened: Adam Dunn.

Stay tuned, this could get even more interesting.
Unfortunately, the White Sox have a weekend series with Boston. If they lose more ground against Detroit, I could see Williams unloading some pieces. I like Quentin a lot, but aside from Gavin Floyd, he's probably the most appealing asset.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 28, 2011

Beltran in in the game tonight and is 0-3 so far and Kendrick is holding on into the sixth.

This and last mints game is proof positive of why the Phils better get a bat for the playoffs.

They might win 105 games but won't get past the second round with this lineup just like last season.
Despite what that ESPN rumor page says there has been talk around here about Quentin for a couple weeks.

Of course I'd rather have Pence but would be glad to add Quentin.
.....as Ryan Howard dribbles another ball to the second baseman. zzzzzzzzzzz

Kuiper (Giants commentator) was talking about Affeldt and Beltran and their KC days. And he mentions how it helped Beltran fit into the Giants clubhouse.

which I thought was funny considering it goes along with an 0-4 day

Damn!, I don't have HBO.
Give us a review of the show.
I would like to know if they mention how they faked the injury so he wouldn't get his 3,000 in Chicago.

Pirates win and salvage a game they had to have. Good news is that Lyle Overbay might be finally benched. Guess that sub 700 ops finally convinced Hurdle that a move had to be made.
