The twins needed to win both of their last 2 series to stay in this race, stick a fork in them now. I'd be surprised if they are within 10 games at the end of august. (series at TX, LAA, CLE, DET, and home against BOS and NYY)

And how do you have 10 fewer wins than a team that loses 15 straight?

Re: MLB Monday, July 25, 2011

Mixed feelings in Seattl eabout seeing Gillick inducted into the HOF. Definitely appreciate his putting together a winner including the 116-win team. But fans and Lou Piniella were frustrated by his reluctance/inability to add key pieces to winning teams, hence the nickname "Stand Pat." Some theories regarding the failure of that 2001 team to make the WS:

-Unexpectedly going down 2-1 in the ALDS to Cleveland, and coming back to win but being unable to line up the rotation for the Yankees. As we've discussed over recent years, momentum seems more important in the baseball playoffs than in other sports.
-Lack of power arms in a deep, solid rotation (Freddy Garcia, Jamie Moyer, Aaron Sele, 17-4 Paul Abbott, closer Kaz Sasaki) and LH bats--see deadline pickups above
-Most significantly, the shadow of 9/11, making the Yankees and unexpected sympathetic figure and inspiring the thoughts that maybe the Yankees "deserved" to win, and maybe it would be better for the country if they did.

Got the job done in Philly. Thanks Pat. Tip o' the hat.

That's the thing: A horse like Felix Hernandez should prevent losing streaks, but he's been giving up some runs, and the team just cannot score.

I was noticing that a number of teams still have a worse record.

I finally got some reluctant agreement from a friend today that the Twins were done when I pointed out they are only 4 games ahead of a Seattle team that just dropped 15 straight.

Braves starting to fall back in the NL East race. Hopefully returning to Atlanta will be good for the team.

Dbacks signed Trevor Bauer. The thought of their rotation in a few years makes me giddy.

Is it true they might be trying to move Span?

He seems like one of the more underrated guys on the team and he's signed long term. If I was a team like the Nats or the Braves I would take him over a guy like BJ Upton in a heartbeat. Upton strikes out a ton, is only signed through next year and the Rays will be likely looking for more in return because he has such "potential". Span also plays a tremendous CF (maybe not the arm of Upton), will steal 25 bases, is a better hitter than many give him credit for and won't strike out 25% of the time.

I know they have Revere, but unless they get some prime prospects why would they do this?

Re: MLB Monday, July 25, 2011

I haven't heard much about it, but it would make sense to a point. Beyond Revere, CF is their deepest position as far as prospects are concerned. Like you said, as he is controlled for longer, it doesn't really make sense to dish him. The smarter move would be sending Cuddy and/or Kubel and shifting Denard if need be.

That said, if you can get value for him I suppose they should go ahead an do it.

Re: MLB Monday, July 25, 2011

To be fair only 14 of those runs are earned ..... Texas has scored at least 3 runs in every inning. Ian Kinsler has batted once in each of the first 5 innings (and has a shot at batting for a 6th time in the 6th)

Time to start thinking about which position player is going to pitch.

Seattle is going to lose their 16th in a row tonight.

Twins with a 3 spot in the eighth. They're back in the game....only trail 20-5 now.

The best part of the Rangers blowout, Cuddyer pitched a scoreless eight inning.

The Mariners have traded away Asdrubal Cabrera, Shin Shoo Choo, Adam Jones and Micheal Morse in the last five years. That's part of the reason why their offense is so bad. They also should have taken Anthony Rendon with the second pick this year.

results oriented thinking at its finest

Cabrera, Choo, Jones, and Morse were all average at best players prior to Seattle trading them. You can't fault Seattle for trading away players who suddenly figure it out 3-5 years after being traded.

Now you could make an argument for a few of those players not getting enough playing time to get in a groove and figure things out, which is fair. Seattle was busy paying shit-tons of money to shitty veterans like Richie Sexson to groom their youngsters.

The defense tried to screw him too, but he got it done. I can't wait to see them try to force him into catching for an inning now and short so he can play every position.

I think Texas could have had a few more runs, but they were stopping pretty early at 3rd. 7 players with 3 or more hits and 43 total bases.

I would count Morse in that category. He only showed flashes other than one hot spring when he made the club and probably would gave gotten playing time but got hurt diving for a ball and lost basically the whole season. Jones was their top prospect at the time, the centerpiece of the Bedard deal. They gave up on Choo too early, but I don't know if Cabrera was a highly regarded prospect. The painful thing about the last two was that they were sent to Cleveland in separate deals for what amounted to a R-L DH platoon of the ESPN guy (Victor Perez? Who retired at the end of that season) and Ben Broussard. Those and the Jones deal were Bavasi's "one last piece" strategy that (a) failed and (b) set the franchise back.

As far as Rendon goes, most projections had him going to Seattle. Maybe his medical records scared them away, making them go for the safe, low-ceiling alternative. It will be interesting to see how that one plays out.
