Quick golf bag question

Sorry if this is a really naive question, but I've never owned a golf bag before.

I've been putting a set of clubs together since around last Christmas, and I got what I think is a fairly decent bag at Goodwill for five bucks. The one thing I haven't been able to figure out about it, though, is what this thing is for:

Anyone?

Re: Quick golf bag question

Thanks. I was leaning toward the umbrella idea, but I saw another bag that had an external putter holder similar to this, only that one appeared to have a bottom to prevent the putter from going all the way through to the ground. So I wasn't completely sure about this one.

Meant for an umbrella but it looks like you could slide a few beers down there, no problem.

Another question about golf bags - pro golfers. Does the club manufacturers name they have on the bag mean that those clubs were actually made by Wilson, Ram, Cleveland, etc.?

Most pros who have endorsement deals are required by the company giving them all that money to have a certain number of clubs by that company in their bag. It's usually nine, I think. A lot of pros will, for instance, play with Ping irons but use a TaylorMade driver and Titleist Vokey wedges. For Ping to endorse them they would have to have mostly Ping clubs, but rarely would they be required to have 14 clubs in the bag by the same manufacturer.

I know Tom Kite, years ago, had the big red WILSON on his bag. He probably had 2-3 Wilson clubs in his bag. He had an assortment of custom made clubs in his bag.

That would sure make pitching out of the rough a whole lot easier.

Re: Quick golf bag question

Pros use a mish mash of stuff. Tiger, for example, typically uses a Scotty Cameron putter, but puts a PING grip on it. Apparently he just likes the PING grip better.

Plus, the clubs that the pros use are night and day different than what Joe Hacker buys at Golf Galaxy. Your clubs and Tiger's clubs might both say Nike on them but his clubs are all bent to shit with God only knows how many different shafts and crap like that.

It actually makes me think...I'm like a 5-7 handicap and hit the ball pretty well. Where I really lose it is with my short game. I know I hit the ball well enough to be at least close to a scratch golfer but my short game is pretty pitiful. I never practice, so sometimes I just wonder how good I could actually be if my JOB was to practice golf for 8-10 hours a day and all of my clubs were specifically designed just for me.

In no way shape or form am I comparing my lousy game to anybody on tour or even good amateur players, but I just start to think about how many strokes I could shave off my game if I practiced golf every day for 8 hours a day and had access to everything the pros do--teachers, swing analysis stuff, fitness guys, equipment guys that can make any type of club just for me, etc.

Re: Quick golf bag question

They tweak them something fierce...I wish I could get all of my clubs custom fitted to that extend. My irons are done, but not my drivers, etc.
