Re: MLB Friday, July 22, 2011

Rough night for the Twins. I knew Verlander would roll (lost a bet that he'd have at least 7K through the fifth). He's always had great stuff, but he has really learned how to pitch this year.

Can't really complain when the Yankees don't score runs against Shields but tough loss for CC.

And seriously how does Kyle Farnsworth have an ERA under 2? Does he not remember that he's Kyle Farnsworth?

When he was with the Yankees his ERA was probably around 2 as well. The only difference is it wasn't per 9 innings pitched, it was per 1.

Good win for the Dbacks, salvaging a series split with the Brewers.

Verlander is a big-time stud, no question.

As for Farnsworth, maybe this will make the straight fastball the new "in" pitch.

Re: MLB Friday, July 22, 2011

Yankees sign Marcus Thames? Are they collecting past their prime right handed hitting OF'rs? I can only think they are going to replace the irrelevant Andruw Jones (who actually has a .828 OPS against lefies... and isn't that why he was brought in?), with an even less relevant Marcus Thames.

In other news... Nick Johnson is in AAA! (yes Nick "DL" Johnson) Just a matter of time before Cashman brings Matsui back and deals away another major pitching prospect for Javy Vazquez.

Re: MLB Friday, July 22, 2011

Albert Pujols batting .576 against Pirates pitcher Pat Maholm going into tonight. He and David Freese with first inning home runs to get the Cards off to a good start.

Edit to add: Pujols with a 2nd inning double. I'd say he owns this guy.

Every Yankee had scored by the end of the 3rd inning and over half the lineup had score twice.

17 of the first 24 batters reached safely.

Phil Hughes still looks terrible though... he's got one swing and a miss on his first 70 pitches. With his current stuff - a 91mph straight as an arrow 4 seam fastball (that fades as the game goes on), I'm not even sure if he's a #5 starter. He needs to find the 3mph he lost off his fastball or develop an effective 3rd pitch if he wants to be a starter; not sure why the Yankees are still running him out there.

Move over Yankees, the Twins have a new master.

(well, I guess another master...)

Mariners lose their 13th in a row, and tomorrow it falls to Blake Beavan to outduel Josh Beckett. Then one more game in Boston followed by three in New York.

Now now, be serious. The Twins actually beat the Tigers when it counts.
