Re: MLB Thursday, July 7, 2011

Hopefully the Yankees can put the boot to the Rays this weekend and start to push them out of the race.

Jeter should pick up #3000 this weekend. It's too bad I'll be away and will be missing every game but tonight. Maybe he'll have a 3 hit game.

Atlanta 3 games back heading into a 3 game series with the Phils. Should be fun!

EDIT: Looks like they will be 2.5 back.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 7, 2011

RIP this guy:

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers say a fan died after falling out of the stands while trying to catch a baseball tossed his way during the game.

Rangers president Nolan Ryan said after Thursday night's game that the team was "deeply saddened" to learn that the man "has passed away as a result of this tragic accident."

The Rangers did not identify the man; they said he fell about 20 feet.

The fan fell head-first and landed behind a 14-foot-high wall supporting a video board that shows replays and scores from other games.

The accident happened in the second inning after Oakland's Conor Jackson hit a foul ball that ricocheted into left field. Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton retrieved the ball and tossed it into the stands.

Replays on Oakland's television broadcast show the man reaching for the ball and apparently catching it before tumbling.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 7, 2011

Just watched the video and what makes it worse is that he was there with his young son and he watched it all happen.

The visitor's bullpen at the stadium is in left-center field. Athletics reliever Brad Ziegler was in tears after the game when he found out the man had died.

"They had him on a stretcher. He said, 'Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself.' The people who carried him out reassured him. 'Sir, we'll get your son, we'll make sure he's OK,'" Ziegler said. "He had his arms swinging. He talked and was conscious. We assumed he was okay. But when you find out he's not, it's just tough."

Yeah I was watching the A's telecast tonight when it happened. At first it didn't look like it would be fatal. Bad news.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 7, 2011

The crowd reaction occurs about 10 seconds in, the actual fall is shown about 55 seconds in. Horrible news. I cringed watching the video seeing the young boy with him.

Brought back memories of seeing something similar in person. Back at the old Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ed Taubensee hits a home run for Cincy and a fan reaching over the front row falls behind the outfield fence, out of view. While normally the crowd would be cheering the home run, there was instead the collective gasp as nearly everyone saw what happened. Fortunately, they announced a couple of innings later that this guy was ok.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 7, 2011

My understanding is that the fall itself didn't kill him, he was conscious as he was loaded onto the stretcher, but suffered a massive heart attack in route to the hospital.

Gotta suck for the player who tossed the ball as well. He did what players do every day, and have been doing for years. I'm sure he/they never considered someone would die because of it.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 7, 2011

Such a shame. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths people go to to get a ball. It's a fucking ball!

Now if you're out there waiting for Thome's 600 HR ball, that might be worth taking a risk. But I see jokers at the ball game all the time falling and jumping all over each other for a foul ball. Why?

Good win by the Dbacks after several rain delays. Figured this trip would be the make or break for the team since they play two great teams on the road (Brewers, Cards) but so far, they have fared fairly well.

^^^Josh is like a big kid out there too. He absolutely loves interacting with the fans before/during/after the games. It's gonna be tough for him, but at least he has a good network of family/friends already in place to help him through tough times.

Yeah, I didn't realize it was thrown at first. Now he can't help thinking "What if I'd thrown it a little farther or a little to the left?". . Not his fault, of course; just a tragic accident.

It's Josh Hamilton we're talking about... he'll probably chalk it up to God's will and be done with it.

Look at Milwaukee's home record. Before the Dbacks beat them 2 games in a row, they hadn't lost 2 games in a row all season. Granted, their records doesn't reflect the greatness of say a Red Sox team or Phillies, but they are both damn fine teams.

Re: MLB Thursday, July 7, 2011

Point taken. 31-13 at home is pretty damn fine.

I just hope the Dbacks have enough to take down the Giants, as I doubt the Rockies are going to turn it on in the 2nd half this year. Giants don't hit, but with that pitching they seem to do just enough to get W's.
