At 29-57 the 'Stros could easily lose 105 games.

Damn. It's depressing being a Houston sports fan these days.

Pujols activated from the DL, though he's not in the lineup tonight. Initially, he wasn't going to be available until August. How do you recover from a fractured arm in just over 2 weeks?

Either way - he is coming back much too fast.

The Pirates are winning again 2-0 over the Astros. They play the Cubbies next before running into the Astros again. After that, they have a difficult part of the schedule as the play the Reds, Cards, Braves and Phillies. By the end of July, we should know whether or not they are true contenders.

It's nice to still be in the running for the division at this point in the season.

Re: MLB Tuesday, July 5, 2011

So I saw that the NL/AL HR Derby players were picked this year by a captain. Is that new? I don't remember that happening in the past. I thought they just offered it to guys and they said yes or no. So Prince Fielder picked Rickie Weeks and Matt Holliday? WTF? 2 guys that are 12th and 32nd in the league for HRs, respectively? Fucking ridiculous.

Re: MLB Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Yep, it's new. There was speculation in Seattle that Papi might recruit Ichiro with more success than the AL brass has had. Reportedly he repeatedly kongs the ball out in BP but has always refused to participate because he doesn't want to mess up his swing. This year he's already pretty messed up so maybe it would have been good for him.

Re: MLB Tuesday, July 5, 2011

So the last place Marlins pick up Dave Cameron from the Red Sox (and maybe some cash) for a player to be named later?

I understand the Red Sox trying to clear roster space, but what the heck are the Marlins thinking picking up a 38year old on the last year of his contract (and not playing particularly well) as a rental? I guess the 80 year old McKeon forgot what year it was and wanted a strong character/veteran guy.... for 3 months?

Berkman's 23rd was 452', the longest homer in the stadium's six years.

Yikes.

Dave, Mike... all the same... too many 4th/5th of July beers.

Dave might actually play better than Mike C (and ironically a year ago DAVE Cameron hailed the Red Sox pickup of Mike Cameron as some sort of great FA signing over at Fangraphs...)

Close play but Varitek applied the tag after Encarnacion touched the plate with his right foot. He was safe.

Lol yeah, I know what you mean, so many players and the names run together.

It was smart for them though because they can absorb those mid-level contracts so if they catch lightning in the bottle, that's just gravy.

Re: MLB Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Who had Jeff Karstens in the top 5 of the NL in ERA? Dan Haren outpitched Verlander and got a CG shutout. Looks like the AL West is going to be competitive with 3 teams within 2.5 game of one another. Same with the AL and NL Central divisons.

Another lost season for the Cubs, and it's clear that the window for A-Ram, Big Z, and that core has closed. I was just thinking this weekend that it'd be nice to root for a team like the Cards that is nearly always in contention and can realistically think about winning a world series, not just when pigs fly.

I only saw one replay then i had to head back home but i thought they had made the correct call. I shall take another look at that

edit-wow, i didn't notice his right leg go around Variteks and that he was indeed safe. Now i'm pissed off!

Atlanta is starting to irritate me. The team with the second most wins in MLB plays in the same division as the team with the best record? Grrr. This weekend's series will be fun to watch. Halladay, Lee, and Worley. We need two.
