That matchup in Philly should be a damn good one.

And the game at Yankee Stadium should be a run fest.

^Along the same vein I got into an argument with a meathead White Sox fan last year over him not rooting for the Cubs when they played the Twins or Tigers a few years back.

Re: MLB Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Cliff Lee and the Phils are up 3-0 after five. Lee only one walk so far, plus he has a sac fly rbi. He's 3-9 with runners in scoring postion with 4 rbi's this season.

Oh and a career hi 28 scoreless innings in a row

NOw it's a 1 hitter and 30 innings.

Lee is pitching one to watch tonight.

Cliff Lee with his third consecutive shutout!

First Phillies pitcher to do that since 1950.

Nick Swisher is putting together a respectable season after starting off so slow... he's on pace for about .250/20/90... can't complain about that from a bottom of the lineup guy.

Giants win both ends of the doubleheader against the Cubs. 7th win in a row. No one is catching them in the NL West.

Can't wait until they beat the Phillies again in the NLCS. That's going to be sweet.

Looks like the Phillies will right the wrongs of last season. Here's hoping Halladay, Lee, and Hamels can stay healthy.

Re: MLB Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Does MLB keep track of fewest RBI per AB? Robert Andino(Balt.) has only 6 RBI so far this season and I'm guessing he has had at least 200 ABs. Back in the 1960s -Pitcher Bob Buhl went 0 for 70(not sure if he had a RBI). Would be interested in fewest RBI for the first 100,200,300 ABs etc. I remember one season,Luis Matos(Balt) had over 400 AB and only had something like 18 RBI(or somewhere in that neighborhood). Bottomline-Players that aren't productive have no business starting most of the games-ATT: Baltimore Orioles(the 13 yr masters of unproductive, quitter ball players).

Good question. I was going to answer that I didn't think anyone did that - though the record for fewest RBIs in a full season (batting title eligible) was relatively easy to figure out. That record seems to be Enzo Hernandez's. As a rookie SS for the Padres in 1971 he had an astonishing 12 RBIs in 549 ABs!

Though I found this site: http://baseball1.com/statistics/ It has every MLB player's stats in a giant spreadsheet. It still won't tell you records for RBI totals for seasons in progress (like 1st 100, 200, 300 etc ABs). That sounds like it would be really tough to do. Though you can easily figure out total season records. Since I was curious, here are the fewest RBI totals for each of those AB milestones (100, 200, 300, etc), counting only NL and AL data:

100 ABs: A handful of guys had no RBIs. All of them from a while back. The most recent was Slim Sallee, a pitcher for the 1912 STL Cardinals. More recently, in 1970 Steve Hovley (OFer for the A's) only had 1 RBI in 100 ABs.

200 ABs: In 1915, Nemo Liebold (OF for CLE) only had 4 RBI in 207 ABs.

300 ABs: Again with the Indians In 1965, Dick Howser (SS) with 6 RBI in 307 ABs.

400 ABs: Now we're getting to serious playing time. For the 1918 A's, Charlie Jamieson (OF) only had 11 RBI in 416 ABs. But that still pales in comparison to the aforementioned Enzo Hernandez (just 1 more RBI in 549 ABs).

600+ ABs: Larry Bowa, 1971 Phillies, had 25 RBI in 650 ABs.

Recent seasons of full-time RBI futility are Willy Taveras (2009 Reds, 15 RBI in 404 ABs) and Luis Castillo (2000 Marlins, 17 RBI in 539 ABs). Castillo's year was also amazing in that he scored more than 100 runs - the only guy to have 5x more runs than RBIs after the dead ball era (post 1920).

Not surprisingly, all the teams with guys this crappy didn't do well in the standings.

Re: MLB Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Interesting stuff. It all comes down too-if you aren't scoring runs or driving in runs-then the player is non-productive. Good teams can afford to have a good defensive player who has a weak bat ,but a poor team really can't afford non-productive players(The Orioles love this kind of player). Nick Markakis is one of the most over-rated players in MLB. Plays everyday batting #2 or #3. A player like that should have 25 hrs and 100 RBI per season but last yr he only had 50 and this yr has been real bad until lately. Amazingly the Orioles keep putting these kind of players on the field and wonder why attendance is so poor . They use their young pitchers as scapegoats ,keep sending them down to the minors, but the position players all get free passes for mediocrity.
