Wow. I can't believe the Twins are only 6.5 games back now. I've barely even been following them since they started so shitty. They're 15-2 over their last 17.

It's just a product of what division you're in. The Orioles have a better record than the twins, but are out by 10 games.

Oh yeah I know...the AL Central isn't very good. I guess my point is that not that long ago they were like 14 or 15 games out and were showing no signs that they could even compete in a Triple A ballgame, let alone win any Major League games.

They've been on quite a tear lately and just now got Mauer back. Span will be back soon, although his replacement (Revere) has been playing well. Morneau is still on the DL too. As is Kubel. Obviously all teams have to deal with injuries, but I'm just saying they went on a huge tear with basically minor league players in their lineup everyday so maybe once they get their "big guns" all back they'll be ok. Then again, they only started winning once they started playing their minor leaguers.

In any event, after the way they started, I more or less wrote this year off. I never dreamt they've have a chance to compete for the division.

Yeah, they've been doing it with mostly scrubs and, surprisingly, against teams out of the central. Really, a slow start was expected, with most of the AL East games happening to start the year, but they looked clueless. Except for last night, the offense is still not very good though.

Yeah they couldn't even do fundamentals--bunt, rundowns, double plays, etc.

They still don't seem like a very good fundamental team though. My buddies and I talk about this all the time. We just don't think they're coached very well. Guys on first and second, no outs, down by 1 run...don't you think that's a bunting situation? The Twins rarely bunt when baseball logic calls for it. They rarely steal. They rarely hit and run. All the things that the Twins USED to be known for, they just don't do anymore. Everybody constantly slobbers on Gardenhire's knob, but I'm not a fan.

Re: MLB Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Yeah, they are completely frustrating, especially on the bases. I think a lot of even the traditional opinion that they do the little things right was just an assumption based on their lack of homeruns/power.

I remember early in the year they had a couple of guys thrown out at home, and they bitched about the players, but you could see the 3b coach waving them home and then would sort of do a half-assed hold sign when they were already around 3rd. Admittedly, I think 3b coach is always an easy guy to bitch about.

I know exactly what you're talking about. He was waving them in and then all of a sudden his arms turned into little T-Rex arms and he half assed put up the stop sign.

I agree that the 3rd base coach is a very easy scapegoat. Really the 3rd base coach is a guideline. The runner still needs to make the ultimate decision. I've seen players go apeshit on the coach for making the "wrong" call and I don't agree with that at all. However, if the coach constantly makes errors that's another story and he really has to be 100% with whatever he goes with. Those guys are running hard to to say "oops, better stop now" can cause some major damage. If you think he should go home, make sure everybody, including you, believes it.

What are you talking about? The man is a genius... he broke out his spring training split squad and the Yankees stole a game against Cincinnati

There is absolutely nothing wrong with sitting Tex, ARod and Martin in the same game.... if I had to bitch about something it would be not sitting Swisher with Dickerson available and he probably should have put Jones in for either Gardner or Granderson to make it an all bench affair.

The night game is basically playing with house money now.... Brian Gordon on the mound and he might even play some of the regulars.

Re: MLB Wednesday, June 22, 2011

No mention of pulling Garcia at 89 pitches and using Robertson and Mo in the early game instead of having Garcia go the distance and saving the big arms for the nightcap?

I'm not going to lie, I'm a little disappointed in you right now.

If the Dodgers can't make payroll-where did they get the money for those fucked-up Brooklyn uniforms?

When you have a game with Posada at 1st base, Pena at 3rd base (and making 3 errors), Cervelli behind the plate and you have a lead late you HAVE to win that game. When you have Brian Gordon going in the night cap, you go all in in the first game. (I'm surprised he didn't sit the starters in the late game instead and just say screw it, if we win the night cap it's a bonus)

Girardi probably could have gone at least one inning longer with Garcia (3 hits and just 2 unearned runs thanks to Pena) and saved either Robertson or Mo for the night cap, but in a 2 run game with the top of the order up, that seems like at least an OK move (if not a smart one).

On a side note did you notice how exceptionally smart Garcia is? (and hopefully the other starters noticed this) He was giving up doubles instead of singles.... much better putting a guy on 2nd than giving up a single, watching Cervelli airmail yet another throw into CF on the inevitable SB attempt and having the runner on 3rd. When Cervelli's catching a double with noone on base is probably a better outcome than a single (and if I were pitching I would consider intentionally balking to move the runner along just the one base after a single)

I don't know what's up with Cervelli lately. He was pretty damn good at stopping the running game last year. All of a sudden he catches a case of the yips and he's reminding us all of Chuck Knobloch.
