Re: MLB Monday, June 20, 2011

Tonights big match-up-Orioles vs Pirates. A combined 30 consecutive losing records playing each other(probably a pro sports record).
The Orioles lead the league in Panzies. B Roberts can't play because of headaches(did Cal Ripken ever play with a headache???). Luke Scott has shoulder problems,Brian Matusz(who has a hard time pitching 5 innings) has been hurt twice,Derrick Lee was on the DL and so on and so forth. Maybe MLB in the next bargaining agreement should pay players who are on the DL constantly be paid 30 percent of their salaries while not playing. B Roberts gently tapped his helment with his bat and now he has concussion symtoms. Void his contract. He injured himself on purpose.

It is amazing that these two teams were the gold standard when I first started watching Baseball in the late 70's. As a Phils fan, our biggest rival was the Pirates in the NL East with Stargell, Parker, etc. Along with the Royals, the Pirates and O's have been irrelevant to MLB for the since the late 90's.

It's pretty amazing that the pirates are only 4 games out this late into the season! I'm rooting for them everyday they are not playing the Brewers.

While I never enjoy seeing a player get hurt, the Pujols injury really cuts both ways for the Brewers. The positive: we have a shot at making a run and putting some serious room between us and St. Louis. The Bad: With Pujols' numbers finishing low this year (barring a monster comeback), Fielder is going to command an even higher price next year.

Pujols having a monster year and getting a monster salary would probably push up Fielder's rate more than him sucking, IMO.

Re: MLB Monday, June 20, 2011

Ivan Nova was impressive against a very good offense tonight. 8 innings and 4 singles allowed. He allowed just 2 singles over the last 25 hitters he faced. He pulls Nova because he was at 102 pitches... and well Nova's arm reportedly will falloff once he gets to 100 pitches.

Good grief... Girardi overmanaging the crap out of a 5-1 game... He brings a righty to face just one batter, gives up a single and is promptly pulled because there's a lefty up.... So he brings in his lefty reliever who he apparently doesn't realize is FAR BETTER against righties than lefties (lefties are hitting .300 off of him, righties .167) who proceeds to drill a batter with the first pitch he throws

And Mariano is in.... if the game is 4-1, Rivera starts the inning... 5-1 game, Girardi makes sure 2 guys are on first and he still has to get 3 outs... Girardi robot managing to the extreme (he's also put in 3 defensive replacements so if the Reds do comeback his lineup is trashed)

the more I read about this Dodgers fiasco, the more I'm loving it. they are in complete disarray and MLB is on the verge of taking them over.

Can somebody dumb down why MLB vetoed the Dodgers TV deal?

I think MLB is worried that the owenrship has been using the Dodgers as an ATM machine and the deal will not help the Dodgers just the McCourt's to milk more money out of the team. Documents apparently showed that they took out nearly 100mil in personal loans from Dodger related businesses (and this deal would just continue that practice)

I do wonder if there is an ownership change, whether they would reconsider the deal. I'm not sure MLB actually has any objections to the deal itself - I think they are rejecting it as a tool to get the current ownership out of the way (they are essentially cutting the funds off which would allow McCourt to settle the divorce without having to sell the team).

While I think it will be good for MLB to get an ownership change, I'm not sure the heavy handed way they are going about it is the right way to do it. Selig could use the "best interests of the game" clause, but I think he sees this as an easier way for him to force the sale.

EDIT - apparently the deal from Fox has a bunch of upfront money and while a large chunk of that goes to the Dodgers, another chunk of that was going to be used to settle the divorce so MLB also objected to that as well.

Re: MLB Monday, June 20, 2011

It was vetoed because it violated the debt-service rule in which teams cannot barrow on future assets to pay current bills.

Even with a change in ownership the deal would have been killed.

Here is a great, detailed article on the Mccourt situation. What a clusterfuck.

Re: MLB Monday, June 20, 2011

The only problem I have with this whole Dodgers fiasco, is there seems to be a double standard for Selig's 'Owner Friends.' He is about to take control of the Dodgers (which is the right thing to do, but is letting the Mets organization handle their problems on their own because he is friends with Wilpon.

When does Bud retire? 2012? 2013?

^But Mccourt is taking Dodger money and using it for his own personal problems. Is Wilpon doing the same thing?

I would not worry myself with that thought. Very unlikely Fielder stays a Brewer next year, especially with the Braun signing to the next century at $1 trillion Brewers front office really put all their eggs into one basket this season. Good or bad, depending on how you want to look at it. As a small market team, it is just about the only way it seems to have a shot at a championship year.

Re: MLB Monday, June 20, 2011

Clearly McCourt is wrong... but Selig is full of crap and a hypocrite on the "loan" and the debt service violation (he has to say this because it's not clear if he has a legal leg to stand on).

McCourt bought the Dodgers with a massive loan from Fox (and a loan from baseball)... and then spun off a part of the Dodgers (this Ticket LLC scam which is in the great IIATMS article that chrish8u linked) to pay back the loan. Selig back then didn't seem to have an issue with a loan, because at the time MLB was behind McCourt getting the team.

And as far as I know this is pretty much the same deal that the Rangers did - it's a future broadcasting rights deal which includes an upfront payment.... the issue is McCourt, as usual, is siphoning money off for his own personal use. But if this violates the debt service rules, I don't see how the Rangers deal didn't do the same as I believe it is structured the same way (just the money is going to different areas). That's why I said if this is an owner that Selig liked and that owner wasn't siphoning off a chunk of the upfront money, the deal would go through. I think it's more of an ethical or moral objection than a legal one.

Baseball is kind of screwed... McCourt spun off a lot of the revenue producing portions of the Dodgers and it's not clear whether baseball can force a sale of these subsidiiaries, even if they are suceessful in forcing a sale of the Dodgers. Right now separate companies own the stadium, the parking lots and the exclusive right to sell tickets. In other words a new Dodgers owner may end up paying McCourt rent for the stadium, rent to use the parking lots and a fee or portion of the revenue to sell tickets.
