2011 U.S. Open Golf Championship, June 16-19

Just around the corner from me in Bethesda, MD.

Facts and figures for the 111th U.S. Open golf championship:

Dates: June 16-19.

Site: Congressional Country Club (Blue Course).

The course: Devereux Emmet designed the original course, which opened in 1924. The club was used for training by the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. After the war, the club hired Robert Trent Jones to revamp the course and make it worthy of a U.S. Open. His son, Rees Jones, has since remodelled the course. It has hosted the U.S. Open in 1964, 1997 and 2011, along with the 1976 PGA Championship. The PGA Tour has held 10 tournaments at Congressional — the Kemper Open, Booz Allen Classic and AT&T National.

Length: 7,574 yards.

Par: 36-35_71.

Format: 72 holes of stroke play.

Cut: Top 60 and ties, and anyone within 10 strokes of the lead after 36 holes.

Playoff, if necessary: 18 holes of stroke play on June 20.

Field: 156 players.

Purse: TBA ($7.5 million in 2010).

Winner's share: TBA ($1.35 million in 2010)

Defending champion: Graeme McDowell.

Last year: Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland became the first European in 40 years to win the U.S. Open. He made only one birdie in a final round of 3-over 74 for a one-shot victory over Gregory Havret. Dustin Johnson began the final round with a three-shot lead, only to make triple bogey on the second hole on his way to an 82, opening the way for Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods to take advantage. Woods bogeyed five of his opening 10 holes. Els and Mickelson stayed in the game through the back nine. No one could catch McDowell, who finished at even-par 284.

Last time at Congressional: Ernie Els won his second U.S. Open by closing with a 1-under 69. He hit 5-iron into the dangerous 17th for par, then made a 5-foot par putt on the 18th. Tom Lehman hit into the water on the 17th, while Colin Montgomerie missed a par putt on the 17th to miss another chance in a major.

U.S. Open champions at Congressional: Ken Venturi (1964), Ernie Els (1997).

It'll take the golfers a year to get ready to play in the toughest golf course I've ever seen.

I'd like to see Kuchar win it or Luke Donald.

So much for my Choi 28-1 bet.

Still have a few others who didn't fair that badly today.

Is it me or does there seem like there is alot of brown spots on the greens? I live in the Northeast, so I know we had 99 degree days last week, but this is still the US Open, shouldn't these greens be perfect??

McIlroy is now at -10 and has a 7-shot lead. He shot -4 on the front-9 today. He eagled #8.

Yep, I was hoping Zach could close the gap a little with his early round, but that didn't last long.

One thing is for sure -- you better be in the top-60 if you want to play the weekend because if this keeps up, there will be few within 10 shots of the lead after 36.

If he hadn't imploded once this year already, I would agree.

Manboobs can't be happy -- he's put together a fine round (-4 after 16) and he's lost ground to the leader. Passed a lot of people though.

This is crazy. Yang hasn't started yet but I doubt he'll go -10 today to catch up.

It's Rory's to lose...which he did quite spectacularly at The Masters...

Re: 2011 U.S. Open Golf Championship, June 16-19

Sheesh. -13 now. That would be lowest under par after 36 in US Open history.

edit: he would actually shatter the record low. The 36-hole low was by Ricky Barnes at Bethpage in 2009 with 132. And Bethpage was a par-70. This is a par-71. A par on 18 would make 129.

Re: 2011 U.S. Open Golf Championship, June 16-19

He's playing absolutely crazy golf. It's a very old cliche but let's see what happens when he gets to the back 9 on Sunday though. He more or less had the Masters wrapped up and imploded big time. Seems like this kid has the potential to shoot 80 at just about any time.

The way he's playing right now I think he'd have to give Tiger version 2000 2 shots a side and Tiger version 2011 about 10 shots a side..

I was joking based on the Masters

Love to see him win it though and redeem himself.

Some big names looking like they will miss the cut.

Any indication on what the cut line will be? I'm guessing +2 or +3?
