Re: MLB Friday, June 3, 2011

Yeah, that's pretty sad.

Here are the leading AL ASG starters:

Catcher: Russell Martin, New York Yankees
First base: Mark Teixeira, New York Yankees
Second base: Robinson Cano, New York Yankees
Shortstop: Derek Jeter, New York Yankees
Third base: Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees
Outfield: Jose Bautista, Toronto Blue Jays
Outfield: Curtis Granderson, New York Yankees
Outfield: Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers
Designated hitter: Michael Young, Texas Rangers

And Mauer is 2nd in Catcher voting

I'm alittle suprised at Cleveland and Arizona's attendance numbers, as they are both in 1st place??? I can understand KC'slow attendance because they haven't been relevant since George Brett, and Tampa never draws fans even though they have been competing in the AL East the past few years.

I think Cleveland's numbers would rise, though I wonder if a lot of fans there are bitter seeing so many of their old stars excelling elsewhere.

Give them some time. Cleveland and Arizona will come around. I don't know what it's like in Arizona but I'm sure in Cleveland no one is really buying it yet. Those are some cynical fans out there. If they're this strong a month from now you'll see those numbers rise.

Plus I'm sure everyone in Cleveland was home hoping that the Heat would blow it.

So much for being in 1st place. Awful showing by the Dbacks last night. If they make any move at the trade deadline, I hope they find a reasonably priced starter.

Re: MLB Friday, June 3, 2011

I guess I should actually watch the play, but everything I've heard indicates that it wasn't dirty on Cousins' part.

Sabean rips into Cousins for ending Posey's year
Posted on: June 2, 2011 8:14 pm
By Evan Brunell

Giants GM Brian Sabean hit the KNBR airwaves Wednesday and had choice words for Scott Cousins, who was responsible for ending Buster Posey's season, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

"If I never hear from Cousins again or he never plays another game in the big leagues, I think we’ll all be happy," Sabean said, calling Cousins' actions "malicious" and adding that he doesn't blame Posey for refusing to return Cousins' phone calls, as the Marlins outfielder has attempted to apologize. The 27-year-old barrelled into Posey on May 25, scoring the eventual winning run in the top of the 12th inning. Cousins had a fairly clear path to the plate, with Posey in front of the dish attempting to field a relay. Cousins chose to barrell into Posey rather than slide on the far end of the plate, causing a broken leg for the Giants' star player.

“In no way, shape or form was he blocking the plate,” Sabean said. “He was just reacting to the throw and trying to get back to make a tag. So [it’s] unfortunate. It’s one of those things that happens to your family. Until it happens to you and hits home, maybe it’s not as real what we’re going through.

“If you listen to [Cousin's] comments after the fact, he pretty much decided -- and it was premeditated -- that, if he got a chance, he was going to blow up the catcher to dislodge the ball,” Sabean said. “And if you watch frame by frame from different angles, he does not take the path to the plate to try to score. He goes after Buster, right shoulder on right shoulder, and to me, that’s malicious.”

Aren't those words harsh?

“Well, no,” added Sabean, intimating that Cousins better be careful the next time Florida plays the Giants. “He chose to be a hero in my mind, and if that’s his flash of fame, that’s as good as it’s going to get, pal. We’ll have a long memory. Believe me, we’ve talked to [former catcher Mike] Matheny about how this game works. You can’t be that out-and-out overly aggressive. I’ll put it as politically as I can state it: There’s no love lost and there shouldn’t be.”

The Marlins will host the Giants on August 12-14 in what will be the team's final matchup of the season. It's possible Cousins won't be around for that, however, as he's hitting .159/.245/.250 in 39 games and has generally been used as a pinch-hitter and defensive replacement.

These are strong words by Sabean, but it's hard to blame him. Posey was a crucial part of the Giants' club, had led the team to a World Series victory last season and was in his second season of what appeared to be a promising career. Now, Posey may never catch again.

“That’s going to be up to Buster once he comes through this,” Sabean said of Posey's future as a catcher. “I know he wants to catch. I know this is a horrific experience for him. He’s in a lot of pain right now. It’s psychologically difficult for him to rationalize this, so that decision is way up the line. But he’s a warrior and if he wants to catch the position then I’m sure he’ll come to camp next spring as a catcher.”

If so, it's likely that Posey will stop blocking the plate the way he had been. His accident has caused many around the game to evaluate expectations of catchers. While no other position player or even pitcher is expected to put himself in harm's way like catchers, backstops have had to deal with the belief around baseball that catchers need to block the plate and absorb collisions to earn respect from players. Teams over the years have attempted to change this, and manager Bruce Bochy even told Posey not to block the plate in spring training, but all too often, it takes an unfortunate incident like this to spur change and shake up the macho culture that pervades sports.

He's a jackass. That was a clean play. Maybe he went to blow up the catcher but that's part of the game. He wanted to guarantee that he was safe. If the script was flipped and a Giants player blew up a catcher on another team leading to an injury I bet Sabean would be the first to come out and say the play was clean. Take a hike, chump.

It was completely clean and those comments are from the perspective of a guy who just lost a franchise player for the year. If he were any other team's GM, he'd see that, because there'd be no emotion in evaluating the play.

Re: MLB Friday, June 3, 2011

Even as a Giants fan I think Sabean is an idiot for letting his emotions get the best of him in those comments. It's almost as he's throwing in the towel, saying "Oh, without Posey we are done and I'm pissed". Just when things started to go a little quieter regarding the Posey/Cousins incident, Sabean digs it up again like an asshat.

Honestly, if Posey (you know the guy who actually got hurt and had to have surgery) decided to move on and get over it, why can't Sabean do the same?

Wild game in St. Louis yesterday. Thank you to Maikel Cleto for all the runs

Sabean is an ass and I'll add that Posey is hardly handling this situation with any class either. I can kind of forgive Posey since he is a young kid who probably thinks the world only revolves around him but Sabean is an old man who should know better.

Some in the press around here are spinning this as it was a calculated move by Sabean to keep the play in the forefront and get a rule change but I think they are simply wishing it was: he is just being a whinny little child because his toy got broken.

How? I've only read that he didn't return a phone call that Cousins gave him to apologize.

It could be seen as really low class, but IMO, it's just Posey trying to get over it and realizing an apology doesn't change what happened.

Sabean is being called by Torre about his comments

I agree, Sabean is making a jackass out of himself, and Posey isn't doing himself any favors either.

And I hope that 9 Yankees get voted into the All Star Game. Maybe baseball would finally have to rethink the way the starters are selected.

I wouldn't say that Posey is handling it with as much class as he could but I really don't blame him for not returning the guys phone call. I'm sure he's very upset/frustrated by the entire thing and if he doesn't feel the need to accept someones apology he doesn't have to. Same thing happened with Derek Jeter in 2003 with his collision with the catcher in Toronto.

But at least he's not publicly calling the guy out.

Re: MLB Friday, June 3, 2011

I heard on the radio that Cousins has been getting death threats, and as it turns out he actually lives in SF in the offseason.

Whatever Posey has or hasn't done to this point, a strong statement from him ("Hey, it was a legal play and that's part of the game") could go a long way toward calming things down.

I was suprised to see my Phillies on this list. We have sold out every game this year, so I wonder if they went too far with our payroll this year being around 170 million. We aren't the Yanks/Sox meaning we don't have the revenue of YES Network and NESN that those clubs do.

Overall, it isn't good when 1/4 of the league has 'debt' problems.

wouldn't be much of an issue if there was a salary cap/floor for the league.

Doesn't the manager ultimately decide who starts the ASG though? Maybe I'm misremembering.
