Re: MLB Memorial Day Weekend, May 28-30, 2011

I haven't chimed in on this Buster Posey debate, but I look at it a whole different way:

I never understood why a team who has a great hitting catcher in the system doesn't convert him to an every-day fielder. You look at guys like Johnny Bench and Mike Piazza, and now Joe Mauer is following in their footsteps: Great hitters who can't play everyday because they are a catcher, and careers are shortened too.

I would rather develop a catcher with a great arm who is an average hitter. Carlos Ruiz of my Phils is a perfect catcher, a great defensive catcher who all the pitchers love, and is a nice hitter, but usually hits 7th or 8th, so when he sits you are not losing your best hitter.

They probably figure it's like getting a bonus bat.

Cubs really unleash the suck against the Pirates. Have for a couple years now.

Anthony Swarzak with a no hitter going through 7 innings.

Of course the Twins have only 2 hits off Dan Haren, so Swarzak may have to go 11 or 12 innings to get the no hitter.

And he's on short notice.... replacing Francisco Liriano who was scratched with a sore shoulder.

I love that approach as well. The Cards have long had a tradition of great defensive catchers who also contributed some on the offensive side of the game--Molina, Matheny, Pagnozzi, etc.

Though I think for any team, the drop off from starting catcher to backup catcher is significant. Even if your starter isn't counted on to produce offensively, it's a blow to a team when he goes down.

On another note, Jaime Garcia has looked like a Cy Young contender so far this season. 5-0 with an ERA below 2. Tonight, the Rockies hung 11 earned runs on him in less than 4 innings.

What is funny that in the prior years the Cubs have owned the Pirates. I would say after the Aramis Ramirez giveaway from 2003 to 2008. The Cubs beatdown the Pirates. Now the roles are reversed.

Though the Pirates suck against the Brewers, they have lost like 36 of the last 40 games they have played in Milwaukee.

I didn't see this new thread. Peter Bourjos finally broke it up.

Oh and Weaver is pitching, not Haren. Danny boy goes tomorrow I believe.

That is pretty funny he replaces the pitcher that threw a no-no, and nearly gets one himself.

Weaver goes the distance and doesn't allow a run and still can't get a win. At least he won't take the loss, but he's got 1 run of support in his last two starts.

He'll be on his way to the Yankees or BoSox next year. Why come back to a team that won't give him runs? The same reason Lackey bailed.

Regardless of the offenses involved, that's quite a pitcher's duel between the Angels and Twins. Only 3 hits combined thru 9 innings.

Re: MLB Memorial Day Weekend, May 28-30, 2011

I want to give the Twins credit, but honestly, I can't. It's just the lineup the Angels trotted out there. Mathis? Willits? Really Scioscia? A career .200 hitter and a guy that's batting .059 this year.

Twins about to win it here thanks to gas can Jepsen. I think the Angels and Twins might have the two worst pens in the league. I can't blame Scioscia though. A guy with an ERA of 11.00 can't be bad all the time, right?

Oops. Three consecutive hits, Twins win.

I caught the very end of the game on my iPad and listened with the Twins guys. The pbp guy was more excited that the Angels had five infielders then when they won the game.
I wasn't even sure the game was over, I thought he was going to say wait a minute the game isn't over time was called or Something.
It was essentially him just saying that the ball was hit out towards Hunter and he let it drop and now players are huddling around home plate.
It was very confusing to me.

Was it the radio feed? Gladden is fucking awful, so I can see how that would have been bad.

I actually watched the full game today and was just waiting for some huge explosion to happen. I was really hoping for Thome to end it though.

I know! It kind of made sense in those years when the Cubs were good. Of course half of their clearance over .500 was probably against the Pirates.

Now the Pirates clean the Cubs' clock but neither team is relevant.

Actually maybe Ramirez is the key. As he's gone south over the last couple of years, the tables have turned.

Re: MLB Memorial Day Weekend, May 28-30, 2011

The Yankees trend continues - make the starter work hard in the first 2-3 innings and put up a few runs.... totally change your approach at the plate and let the guy cruise through the next 3 innings and then try to gear things up late after you surrender the lead.

Yankees manage to tie it up against Felix in the top of the 7th and since his long man had thrown all of 32 pitches, it's time to revert back to one inning-itis and burn through the bullpen.... in a tie game (surely this will not go extras)

My prediction.... extra innngs, Girardi having used up all relievers, has to hand the ball to either Lance Pendeleton or Luis Ayala for the "L". In a tie game he will use Robertson - 7th, joba - 8, Mo- 9 and the Girardi will say oh crap why didn't I have Noesi stay in after pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless ball and throwing all of 32 pitches. Someone will ask Girardi why he pulled a long reliever in a tie game who was effective and had thrown only 32 pitches, and Girardi will say "well it was the 7th inning and Robertson's my 7th inning guy"

Was he complaining about how the other team wasn't trying hard or how they were just bad people? If so, that's Gladden. Honestly, he spends at least an inning a game just ragging on the other team. Loved him as a player, but he's a terrible broadcaster. Not Hawk Harrelson bad, but still pretty bad.

Trying to figure out how Boone Logan enters a game before Mariano Rivera in a tie game in extra innings.

I'll never understand the save the closer in a tie game on the road..... why do managers want their 4th or 5th best pitcher in the game when a single run allowed will end it and it will leave your best bullpen arm on the bench?

And now Luis Ayala is in.... again Rivera is on the bench.. If they lose this game without Rivera entering the game, Girardi should be fired on the spot.

Unless he is hurt, this is insanity....

Yeah, saving the closer and sticking in the 4th or 5th best bullpen guy in a tie game is stupid. I also don't like the fact that some managers will only bring in their closer in the ninth inning.

The Red Sox/Tigers game was PPD yesterday so it will be made up tonight. Beckett/Verlander will be a good matchup to watch. Oh, except that it wont be televised anywhere because ESPN has exclusive rights during that time. What a bunch of bullshit.

I noticed he was at .270 so assumed he had gotten on a hot streak of some kind. I'm happy he's having some success.
