Re: MLB Monday, May 23, 2011

I knew the Phillies offense would take a hit when they lost Utley, Werth and had a year older Ibanez but I didn't think they'd be this bad. The team must be counting down the days until Utley returns and hopefully for them it doesn't take long for him to get his swing going.

And ballsy performance by Ivan Nova yesterday. He didn't have anything. Yet he only gave up 3 runs over 6 innings. It's great to see a young guy go out there without his best stuff and not completely implode on the mound.

Re: MLB Monday, May 23, 2011

he gave up 10 hits... to the mets out of all teams...

But once i saw the ball go underneath Pelfreys legs, i knew the yankees were going to win the game and put up big numbers... that always seems to happen... weird hits generates big offense.. not sure how... good to see the yankees can bring the pain...

Utley will supposedly be in the lineup tonight.

And with the lack of production, the Phils still have the best record in the NL and second in the league behind only Cleveland(!). Good thing the Phils have some arms available for trade.

God I wish Cleveland would slump already. The Sox are slowly clawing their way back. Thing is, Detroit is 7 back, KC 8 and Sox 9. So other than Cleveland it would be a tight division. We just need them to have a nice 6 to 7 game losing streak.

The Sox just need to play Cleveland more. Problem solved.

I'm not drinking the Indians Kool-Aid just yet. I don't know why they're winning but I don't think it lasts long.

I told my friends when they signed Lee that the Phillies didn't lose last year because of a lack of pitching, and that they needed offense. Most were just blinded with excitement.

Re: MLB Monday, May 23, 2011

Joe Girardi overmanaging yet again... intentionally walking 2 batters in a succession of 3 batters in a tie game.... in the top of 6th! (shockingly both runners scored)

The Jays score 5 runs on 3 hits in the inning thanks in part to Girardi trying to avoid a single run from scoring in the 6th inning of a 1-1game as if that would mean game over. Hooray managing like one run is the end of the world. He does the same crap with bunting... he kills the chance at a big inning for what he thinks might be a 1-2% better chance of getting a single run. He treats every situation like it's the 9th inning of the 5th game of the WS.

I understand walking Batista with a guy on 2nd and no out (well kind of...in a 1-1 tie the absolute worst thing that can happen is he hits a HR and you are down 2 with 4 innings of AB's left); but how do you issue a 2nd intentional walk? It's not the 9th inning and a sac fly just makes it a 2-1 game, even a single and it's still just a 3-1 game. Instead Girardi sets up the huge inning by loading the bases thanks to 2 intentional walks and just one hit. Always good when you load the bases for the opposing team on 2 intentional walks and pray for a double play... it's a sound strategy that typically works out and he just ran into some bad luck (or at least that's what he'll think).

I get making some of these moves late in the game (8th or 9th inning), but he's starting the bunting in the 2nd inning on several occasions... including once while he had a 2 run lead in the 2nd inning. He intentionally walked Wilson Betemit while down 5 runs in the 6th inning a week or two ago... because with guy on 2nd that's what you do when you have a guy like Betemit up at the plate... you have to prevent that potential 6 run lead. He had a position player bunting with 2 strikes in the 7th inning the other day... with the lead!
