I think they need to inject some stem cells into Phil Hughes' arm.

Bartolo Colon, 8 shutout innings on 87 pitches with just 3 hits.

And Girardi pulls him.....

Cards beating up on the Astros, but it could be a costly victory.

Holliday left the game with a tight quad and Berkman injured his wrist on a diving catch.

Re: MLB Wednesday, May 18, 2011

....And Mo blows the save... hooray pre-programmed bullpen use!

Colon was at 87 pitches and dominating, but hey he looked real tired as he was only hitting 95 in the 8th inning while striking out the side He gave up 1 hit after the 2nd inning... how do you not let him finish (especially since Mo had pitched yesterday).

It's a good thing Girardi brought Mariano into the game yesterday with 2 out in the 9th and a 4 run lead to get 1 out! That was optimal use... there was 1 runner on base so he was probably worried about the grand slam.

He had someone bunting with 2 strikes with the damn lead tonight.... because there was a runner on first and no out and that's what you do no matter what. It is beyond absurd how inflexible he is as a manager.

Yay the Phillies only gave up one run and didn't even lose the game. Miracle. Cole Hamels was great tonight.
He has five games of eight K's or more and that apparently ties for most this season.

That Yankee game was one of the craziest I've seen in a long time. I'm exhausted just from watching it, so I can only imagine how the players feel.

Re: MLB Wednesday, May 18, 2011

AJ Burnett pinch running in the 15th inning

Orioles bean Dickerson in the head and Girardi apparently didn't want Posada to run for him so they turn to the speedster!

The umps tossed the last Orioles reliever after the beaning (the pitch didn't seem intentional so I'm not sure why they tossed him - there were no HBP's or warnings in the game) so Schowalter is forced to use tomorrow's scheduled starter to finish out the game. Schowalter better be telling his batters to duck tomorrow... while this didn't seem intentional the Orioles also beaned Martin in an earlier game this year after he had hit two HR's (which did seem intentional)... they should be glad AJ is not pitching tomorrow (although CC might put a 95mph pitch between someone's #'s tomorrow).

So a game in which Colon was dominant and should have been able to close out, turns into a crazy 15 inning win... hooray Girardi!

Even as a Twins fan, I'm glad to see Peavy back. I was always a fan when he was with San Diego. Hope he can stay healthy.

Agreed, Peavy seems like a class act. It sure seemed inevitable that he'd end up with the Cubs a few years back, but it never happened. I think the key to the deal was going to be Josh Vitters, who's still in the Cubs system so we'll see how that pans out.

Putting in Mariano Rivera is never the wrong move.

but not when the guy is under 90 in the pitch count and still dealing 95mphs in the 8th...i can understand if he put a runner on base but that didnt happen either

Putting in MO that early was the wrong move but no worries, our entire bullpen is tired now

It wasn't the wrong move at all. If Colon had given up a hit and Mo came in and gave up the tying run the sentiment would have been to put Mo in sooner. It didn't work out this time, but you bring Mo into a one run game on a few days rest every time.

it was the wrong move with a low pitch count... of course we dont know what would have happened in the 9th but from what the game was going, Colon was dealing and there was a good possibility he would have got at least one out in the 9th...

I'm just saying that if I had to put money on one guy getting 3 outs in the 9th inning I'd always take Rivera. If Colon got pulled in the 8th, I'd agree with you but I can completely see why he'd go with Mo in the 9th.

Re: MLB Wednesday, May 18, 2011

As Yogi told my father last night when he asked him why you would put Rivera in for the 9th with the way Colon was pitching, he replied in typical fashion, "You just do".

I agree that Girardi tends to over-do it when using his bullpen, but I think pretty much every manager out there would put Rivera out in the 9th with the game on the line.
