Cards pitcher Kyle Lohse wore a Tony LaRussa jersey and hairstyle to the home plate meeting with the umps prior to the game today.

St. Louis up 6-1 in the 7th so it must have had a positive effect on the squad.

Also possible: it had a negative effect, and they'd be winning 12-0 if not for the distraction.
But far more probable: it had absolutely no effect on the squad.

True, but I like the approach. Get beat up bad on national television the night before, come out in an early afternoon game the next day and you have the team laughing in the dugout prior to the game.

Today's outcome was definitely due more to Jaime Garcia shutting the Cubbies down.

Re: MLB Thursday, May 12, 2011

Yankees with another phenomenal defensive inning.... lead off HR, single, error on a double play ball, lazy pass ball, infield single, weak flare double, catcher throws a ball into CF on a pickoff attempt, walk, another botched double play (but since they get one out, no error), groundball single.

6 runs (3ER, though really only 1 run was earned) on 5 hits, 4 botched defensive plays. On the plus side down 6 runs probably means fewer bunts from Girardi.

Cervelli has been horrendous behind the plate this year (and he also was last year); I don't know why Girardi likes him so much. He is terrible blocking pitches (he doesn't get his body in front and will often just reach or attempt a backhand), he bounces ~75% of his throws to 2nd base, and gives up some amazingly routine passballs. I'd much rather have Gustavo Molina as the backup as even though he can't hit a lick, he's solid defensively.

Rays have to be one of the best teams to ever start 0-6. They are a force right now.
