2011 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

C'mon. Gotta be someone other than me interested in this.

Congrats to Denver on their seeding. First ever NCAA Tournament game west of the Mississippi. Maybe we'll get some later round games at Mile High some day.

ROUND 1

All first round games at higher seeded school.

(1) Syracuse vs. Siena (May 15, 7:30 PM, ESPNU)
(8) North Carolina vs. Maryland (May 15, 1:00 PM, ESPN)
(4) Notre Dame vs. Penn (May 14, 2:30 PM, ESPNU)
(5) Duke vs. Delaware (May 14, 5:00 PM, ESPNU)

(2) Cornell vs. Hartford (May 14, 7:30 PM, ESPNU)
(7) Virginia vs. Bucknell (May 15, 3:00 PM, ESPNU)
(3) Hopkins vs. Hofstra (May 14, 12:00 PM, ESPN2)
(6) Denver vs. Villanova (May 15, 5:15 PM, ESPNU)

ROUND 2

At Foxborough, MA

Syracuse/Siena vs. North Carolina/Maryland (May 22, 12:00 PM, ESPN2)
Notre Dame/Penn vs. Duke/Delaware (May 22, 2:30 PM, ESPN2)

At Hempstead, NY

Cornell/Hartford vs. Virginia/Bucknell (May 21, 12:00 PM, ESPNU)
Hopkins/Hofstra vs. Denver/Villanova (May 21, 2:30 PM, ESPNU)

Semi-finals May 28 (ESPN2) and Final on May 30 (ESPN) from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore

A couple of nice chances for upsets in round 1. Bucknell is good and could take out a depleted and underachieving Virginia team. North Carolina/Maryland is a tossup. Could even see Hofstra beating Hopkins (oh please)

Go Bison! Fuck those UVA snobs.

Watched the Bucknell Patriot League title game a couple Sundays ago -- they completely dominated Colgate.

Bad collapse down the stretch by Bucknell there. The game was theirs.

Been all chalk so far. Denver's tied with Villanova in the 3rd, and Syracuse-Siena isn't exactly an upset candidate (though neither was Syracuse-Army last year)

Didn't UNC lose to Maryland?

Yeah. Pretty much consider that "chalk" though. It's a conference game (even though the ACC technically doesn't count as a conference) and I figured Maryland was the favorite there. Given the farce that is ACC lacrosse (and that moronic "ACC tournament" they do for RPI purposes) it doesn't make much of a difference.

First Round Results:

(3) Hopkins (boo!) 12, Hofstra 5
(4) Notre Dame 13, Penn 6
(5) Duke 15, Delaware 14
(2) Cornell 12, Hartford 5

Maryland 13, (8) North Carolina 6
(7) Virginia 13, Bucknell 12 (OT) (sorry Red Dog)
(6) Denver 13, Villanova 10
(1) Syracuse 10, Siena 4

Round 2:

From Shuart Stadium, Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY

(2) Cornell vs. (7) Virginia (May 21, Noon on ESPN2)
(3) Hopkins (boo!) v. (6) Denver (May 21, 2:30 PM on ESPN2)

From Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA

(1) Syracuse vs. Maryland (May 22, Noon on ESPNU)
(4) Notre Dame vs. (5) Duke (May 22, 2:30 PM on ESPNU)

Outside of Cornell-Virginia (think Cornell takes that one easily), I could say any of the other 3 are a tossup. Denver's traveling cross-country, but they're talented (though that could be out of a hatred of Hopkins). Maryland's tough, and I could see them taking out the Orange. Notre Dame-Duke is a rematch of last year's title game.

Re: 2011 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

Where's the love for Hopkins? All they've done is qualify for their 40th consecutive NCAA tourney. And considering that there's only BEEN 41 of these tourneys, that's a pretty good mark I think. Okay, well, someone has to love these underdogs. Guess it'll be me.

Go Jays!

(PS - My Master's in Systems Engineering was from JHU so my rooting interest is more than just passive.)

Re: 2011 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

Of course, kenbuzz, that ignores that Hopkins had no business being in last Year's tournament.

What a day for upsets. Virginia and Denver both win, and win convincingly. Any day Hopkins loses is a good one.

Damn, I thought Hopkins had the stuff to take it all this year.

Re: 2011 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

And the upsets continued today. After a first round that was almost completely chalk, the second round was nothing but upsets. As I feared, Maryland stops Syracuse 6-5 in OT, and Duke wins the rematch of last year's title game.

(6) Denver vs (7) Virginia in one semifinal next weekend in Baltimore, with (5) Duke vs Maryland in the other. 3 ACC teams in the semis.

This was the first time Syracuse has lost in the quarterfinal round. They were (I think) 25-0 coming into today. The senior class, who won more than any other at Syracuse, end with 2 titles.

Re: 2011 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

No lax thread this year? When did Loyola get so good? Growing up in Baltimore, I never remember them being a factor. It's too bad they didn't have the F4 at Ravens Stadium this year.
