Re: 2011 NHL Offseason

The Wild fired Richards.

Too bad they couldn't have just tanked the whole season for draft position.

Re: 2011 NHL Offseason

They should not do a lottery for the #1 pick. It should just go off record.

Too bad the Blues won't acquire a number one center, that they have been lacking for years, during the off-season.

I don't think there is much point. Might as well just go back to the old way since the lottery is so heavily weighted in the last teams favor anyway.

Stars fired coach Marc Crawford. I think that has to be the end for him. He hasn't been successful anywhere in at least 10 years.

Have the last place teams always gotten the first pick since the lottery has been implemented?

The draft lottery started in 1995. Here are the times when the worst team didn't get to pick first.

1998 Tampa Bay worst team, San Jose won and would have picked first. Tampa Bay had right to exchange picks, and exercised option. (Lecavalier)
2000 Atlanta worst team, New York Islanders won and picked first (DiPietro)
2001 New York Islanders worst team, Atlanta wins and picks first (Kovalchuk)
2002 Atlanta worst team, Florida wins and trades pick to Columbus (Nash)
2003 Carolina worst team, Florida wins and trades pick to Pittsburgh (Fleury)
2004 Pittsburgh worst team, Washington wins and picks first (Ovechkin)
2007 Philadelphia worst team, Chicago wins and picks first (Kane)

Caps won over the Pens to draft Ovechkin. Imagine Ovechkin and Crosby playing on a line together. Malkin was not a bad consolation prize though.

Will Phoenix move back to Winnipeg?

Will Atlanta move to Quebec?

Re: 2011 NHL Offseason

I think they are both in pretty big trouble where they are. I would bet that one of them goes this summer. The Atlanta group owns the arena they play in, so they could sell off the Thrashers relatively easily if they chose to. I bet that Kansas City is in play if both of them end up moving soon. They are more ready to take a team right away than Quebec City. I don't think Kansas City will be a good long term market, but that won't stop the NHL from moving a team there. They've got the arena built and waiting, and AEG is already involved with the league.

I hope the Jets reappear next year.

Would the Moose be able to survive if that happens?

There's no way the Moose would stay if the Jets came back. There was some odd talk about the Moose moving to Abbotsford, the Heat moving to Chilliwack and the Bruins going to Victoria. I'd rather see the Moose in Abbotsford and the Heat in Victoria. Chilliwack is just too small and too far away from the larger population for it to work.

I don't think their stadium is supposed to be ready until 2013, so probably not.

Re: 2011 NHL Offseason

2nd pick and 11th, hopefully that 11th pick will be the silver lining to losing Stewart. Then the huge question mark of goal tending...

Turner/FOX (partnered together) have pulled out of the NHL TV rights bidding. It's now down to Disney-ESPN and NBC-Comcast(VS).

I don't mind Versus, the thing that bugs me the most is they only have 1 channel during playoff time (they have an alternate channel - at least on DirecTV - but never use it for whatever reason).

Re: 2011 NHL Offseason

Glad Turner is out. They were looking to build up sports on TruTV after the NCAA tournament. The last thing the NHL needs is to move to another network that no one associates with sports. At least at this point, pretty much everyone has heard of Versus and knows that's where NHL games are. I think that I've read that they have the right to match any offer, so I would be surprised to see the contract go to ESPN.

I don't understand why they don't put games on NHL Network.

I'm sure it's a contractual thing, but I agree it doesn't make much sense.

Re: 2011 NHL Offseason

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. The US NHLN wasn't around when they did the deal with VS, so they may have language in the contract that prevents it. Hopefully in the next contract, whoever is the cable partner gets to pick their games, and NHLN can air the others.

Re: 2011 NHL Offseason

Looks like Versus/NBC is getting the new contract. "Major announcement" at 1pm ET today with Gary Bettman and Dick Ebersol.
