2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Can we have a thread for tennis? I know there was a thread for the Aussie open, and another one for Milos Raonic, but for just generic stuff, and the other minor tournaments, maybe this thread will work. Probably not going to have too much traffic, but we'll see.

Anyway, both tours are at Indian Wells this week, and at least for the men's side of things, the semis are looking quite good.
ESPN3 has coverage, and last night, Nadal was pushed to the limit by Ivo Karlovic in 3 sets- the 3rd set a tie-breaker which Nadal won 9-7. Nadal now faces Del Potro in the semis, and Djokovic and Federer square off once again in the other semi.

I think Federer's #2 ranking is in jeopardy this week if Djokovic wins (I think, correct me if I'm wrong).

Right now though, it's the two tennis beauties- Wozniacki and Sharapova- battling each other in a semifinal matchup. Tune in to ESPN3 to watch.

Shucks. Didn't even see that one.

Not much of a contest between Wozniacki and Sharapova.

Got a bit of bonus coverage now with the men's doubles semis: Nadal-Lopez vs. Federer-Wawrinka

So it's going to be Nadal vs. Djokovic in the finals tomorrow. Roger has lost to Djokovic 3 times already this year.

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Federer is going to have an even tougher time of winning the big tournaments because as the #3 seed he will more often than not land on Nadal's side of the draw.

I still think Federer has a GS win or two left, but it's going to be because how the draw played out. A big upset of guys like Djokovic, Nadal, Murray, or Del Potro...but I think the days of him beating a couple of these guys in the same tournament are over. (and as a Federer fan I hope I eat my words)

I don't think the ranking means much as long as you are in the top 4. On hard, Djoker is currently a better player than Rafa and at Wimbledon, Fed will still be ranked #2. On clay, it doesn't matter.

Fed is 29 now, so I've lowered my expectations considerably. His biggest problem is lack of consistency. Too many ups and downs within matches and he can no longer find that extra gear when he needs it. Of course, one of the main reasons for that is that other players have caught up.

And Wozniacki, the human backboard, wins in 3.

Djoker vs Rafa just started.

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Pretty good match so far with some great hitting. I think Djokovic still has a bit to learn in keeping his cool. He looks great, and has potential to be the #1 but he really lets his negative emotions show too easily, and that just gives your opponent an advantage when you can't control your frustrations.

Great atmosphere at Indian Wells. I heard the capacity in the stadium is greater than that of the Rod Laver arena.

Only saw the 1st set and the beginning of the 2nd because ABC stopped coverage at 6 PM. I was sure Djoker would lose but I just saw the final score. So wtf happened??? Did Nadal suddenly get tired/sick/injured?

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Nadal's 1st serve % was way down after the 1st set.
By set, his 1st serve % was 57%, 25%, 45%. Djokovic was able to take advantage of that. But it appeared that Nadal kept trying to bang 120-130mph 1st serves, and kept missing them. I don't know if it would have made a difference if he just took some of the power off, and just try to get the 1st serve in. That, and Djokovic really spread the court with his groundstrokes in the last two sets. He won the last 3 games of the 2nd set (3-3 became 6-3), and went to a 4-0 lead in the final set- winning 7 games in a row in that stretch.

Djokovic has now started 2011 with a 18-0 match record, beating Sampras's 17-0 start in the late 90s. Next record up is Lendl's 25-0 start. Djokovic would have to win the title in Miami, and then some, for that to happen.

Came here to post the same thing, ABC in Orlando cut off at 6pm too, stupid local news. Looks like it was a good match.

The match continued on ESPN. Djokovic is clearly the world's best hardcourt player now. Nadal played the match too much like a claycourt affair, that gave Djokovic too much time to hit big shots. Fed will need help at a grand slam tournament now to win it, like a favorable draw or one of the big players going down with an injury.

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Starting this week is the next ATP Masters 1000 event- the Sony Ericsson open in Miami. 96 players with the 32 seeds with 1st round byes. The draws are out, with the top 8 seeds as follows (if they all end up advancing to the Qtrs): Nadal (1) vs. Berdych (7), Federer (3) vs Roddick (8) in the top half. Ferrer (6) vs Soderling (4), Murray (5) vs Djokovic (2) in the bottom half. So that means Fed and Nadal are in the same half. Milos Raonic (the 31 seed) could potentially meet Ferrer in the 3rd round. Del Potro is in Soderling's draw, with a potential meeting in the 3rd round.

After this event, it's a 2 month swing through clay (Monaco, Madrid, and Rome being the Masters 1000 events), leading up Roland Garros. Let's see if Djokovic has it in him to make a serious push for #1. He's made it to the semis at Roland Garros twice (losing to Nadal in straight sets in 2007 and 2008), so I guess he's not too shabby on clay.

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Hey everyone. I found a free fantasy-type competition on ATPWorldTour.com
I guess some of you might already be aware of it, but I thought it might be fun to have a DVD Talk group too.
Pick winners of matches in the ATP 1000 Masters events to win prizes- prizes given for winners (top scorers) of each event, as well as the cumulative points winner for all the Masters events. It's free to join. I already missed out on the Indian Wells event, but there are still chances to win the individual events and get prizes.

If anyone wants to play with me: go to http://challenge.atpworldtour.com and register. I registered under the same username I have here.
I created a private group for us.

Not another game for Milos.

Lost 6-7, 5-7 to Devvarman.

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Miami Men's Quarters:

Nadal (1) vs Berdych (7)
Federer (3) vs Simon (25)

Ferrer (6) vs Fish (14) (Fish wins 7-5, 6-2)
Djokovic (2) vs K. Anderson

Note: A Fed vs Nadal semi hasn't happened since 2005

Miami Women's Semis:

Petkovic (21) vs Sharapova (16)
Zvonareva (3) vs winner of Azarenka (8) - Clisjters (2)

Clijsters was down 1-5, 0-40 on her serve in the 3rd set last night and of course Ivanovic choked and Kim won.

And go Petko! I wanna see more Petkodance!

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Nadal will probably win, but Berdych has the game to beat him so it wouldn't be a complete surprise if he won.

Federer should beat Simon comfortably, but it will probably be a tight match. I'm still certain Federer will come out on top.

Sharapova and Azarenka for the women's matches.

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

I'm about middle of the pack with my predictions. Got Nadal, Fed, and Djokovic right for the semis, but thought Del Potro would make it. My position is 9455th out of 19608 with 88points for this event.

Hope more of you guys can join in the next tournament just for fun to see how we do, even though we're too late for the grand prize (unless some of you actually started already)

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Well Djoker demolished Fish, can't wait for Fed vs Rafa in about 20 min!

It will be Sharapova vs Zvonareva in the women's final.

And, say it ain't so

Q. Is the dance officially retired, or is Djokovic stealing the dance?

ANDREA PETKOVIC: I hope so. He told me he was going to do it. I saw him in Indian Wells doing like some kind of it, but this was not really the Petko Dance. So I really hope he steps up his game.
Yeah, Petko Dance from Petko is retired. I don't know if any other players will try to involve them in their games. I would be very happy to see it.

Pretty much what I expected for Fed vs Rafa. I'm predicting Rafa will avenge his defeat at the Indian Wells final.

Huh.. that was a let down... Poor Fed got smoked. His movement was just terrible, shanking balls all over the place. Oh well, 29 y/o and counting!

I still think that the way he's playing, Djoker will win.

Re: 2011 ATP / WTA Tennis Thread

Just a heads-up that both the mens and womens finals will be televised by CBS and not ESPN or ESPN2.

Womens Final - Saturday, April 2 - LIVE - 12:30 pm ET.
Mens Final - Sunday, April 3 - LIVE - 1:00 pm ET.
