College Hoops, NCAA Tournament Play-in Games and Round of 64

Sheesh. Bucknell only got 500 tickets from the NCAA. That's shockingly low. They definitely got a lot more when they went to Dallas 5 years ago. I guess Stubhub it is.

How the heck did 'Cuse get stuck in the final game of the Round of 64?

No matter. At least it's a home game (hey, if ESPN considered the Atlantic City games to be home games for the 'Cuse, Cleveland's only 15 miles further from Syracuse than AC is.)

Re: College Hoops, NCAA Tournament Play-in Games and Round of 64

Somebody has to play in the final game.

Tickets stubhubbed. Expensive, but I sure wasn't going to sit in the upper deck at Verizon. F that shit. Still a lot cheaper than what I spent getting to/from Dallas 5 years ago.

Re: College Hoops, NCAA Tournament Play-in Games and Round of 64

I take Thursday and Friday off every year for the opening weekend, but this week my boss had an unavoidable conflict that means she'll have to be out of the office on Friday. Since we're only a 2-person department, that means I need to fill in.

We've at least worked it out so that I'll only be working a half-day. I'll miss the first set of Friday games but will leave in time to watch the Arizona game, then after that ends I'll need to monitor emails the next couple of hours to keep an eye out for any emergencies, but I can at least be home to watch what's on.

From the other thread and super late, but you are right again. I was counting individual teams in/out to get to 7, but I guess that's not a fair/correct way to do it.

Are they doing March Madness Online again this year? Also, Thursday and Friday 1/2 days have been secured. Will be home by 11:40AM each day. Can't wait.

One of the funniest, yet saddest, message boards I've ever seen was the Northwestern rivals board over the weekend as they tracked teams that could knock them out of the NIT.

What the hell? There's a tourney below the NIT? For shame. Is there anybody left out? I think we should start another tourney for those schools and call it the Simultaneously Held Invitational Tournament.

There's 2 below the NIT. Maryland get left out of the NIT and rejected invites to the others.

I always thought it was funny that UCLA had an NIT banner hanging in Pauley. I know before 1985 it was a different kettle of fish, but still to have that thing in the rafters next to 10 or 11 championship banners seemed strange. Someone must have eventually agreed with me, because it's no longer up there.

I remember the CBIT from when the UW Huskies had Spencer Hawes and didn't even make the NIT. So they accepted an invite to the CBIT (might have been the first one) and lost in the first round.

Well, the Terps' RPI (0.5407) was 98th best. 68 in the NCAA plus 32 in the NIT equals 100 schools. Figuring in the 8-10 NCAA automatic qualifiers that are WELL below the top 100 RPI schools, and the cut-off for the NIT falls somewhere in the 87-90 range (Kent St, James Madison, Long Beach). If the NIT just went for the next-best 32 schools, Maryland would've been about 10 schools out of the money.

Re: College Hoops, NCAA Tournament Play-in Games and Round of 64

1) The NIT takes the regular season conference champion if they don't win their conference's tournament, so there are several low-quality teams that make that field as well.
2) The RPI is, like in the NCAA tournament, a part of the selection criteria, not the sole determinant.
3) The RPI is a very poor metric for measuring a team's quality, all things considered. (Maryland is 36th in kenpom's rankings, 50th in Sagarin's, and 63rd in Massey's)
