MLB 2011 Spring Training Thread

Well, pitchers and catchers have reported for just about all the teams now, so we might as well get the Spring Training thread going.

I don't care where Pujols plays in 2012 and beyond, he's going into the HOF as a Cardinal.

Re: MLB 2011 Spring Training Thread

Funny Caple article on ESPN.com lists what every team will offer Pujols next offseason. A few that made me chuckle:

Chicago Cubs: General manager Jim Hendry will say that it doesn't make financial sense to offer a 10-year, $300 million contract to any player who will be 41 in the final year of the deal. He will therefore offer Pujols a $300 million, five-year contract.

Texas: The Rangers are willing to offer Alex Rodriguez's old contract to Pujols, by which they mean the $25 million they still owe A-Rod from the contract to which former owner Tom Hicks signed Rodriguez in 2000. They also are willing to give him Michael Young's locker, plus Young's jersey, plus all of Young's at-bats, all of which "we're sure Michael will be totally cool with."

Tampa Bay: The Rays will offer Pujols an eight-year, $250 million contract with the caveat that he must bring 25,000 of his closest friends to each game.

Colorado: The Rockies won't offer Pujols a contract but as soon as he signs somewhere, they will give Troy Tulowitzki another $134 million contract extension through 2030.

Chicago White Sox: The White Sox will consider offering Pujols a six-year, $190 million contract but decide at the last minute that they don't need him, then watch Albert sign with the Twins and lead Minnesota to the AL Central title.

Cleveland: Cleveland will offer Pujols a minor league contract because that's where it keeps its best players.

Re: MLB 2011 Spring Training Thread

Apparently the Brewers and Rickie Weeks have agreed to a 4-year, $38.5 million dollar deal with an option that could make it a 5-year/$50 million dollar contract.

I know Weeks is a talented player, but he's also a career .253 hitter who just had his first season of more than 500 ABs last year, a season which included 184 strikeouts.

I can't wait to see the Dbacks/Rockies new spring training facility. Sounds like it's light years beyond anything in either league.

As a diehard Tiger fan, this is the worst news we could get. There are obviously some deep seeded issues with this guy.

Re: MLB 2011 Spring Training Thread

The cards should trade Pujols for Cabrera. The Tiggers would pony up the cash, and Stl would still have a stud at 1st.

Re: Pujols, any word on just how far apart he and the cardinals are?

As for which teams are in the hunt of course the Yanks but maybe not so much the Red Sox unless they let Ortiz go, as both teams would probably have Pujols DH as he is one of the worst fielders of the last 40 years. How many teams have a legit shot at Pujols?

The Blue Jays have a 5pm news conference to announce Bautista contract signing. A 5 year $65 million dollars contract.

I think I heard them say on ESPN this morning that the Cards were like $75 million short.

Re: MLB 2011 Spring Training Thread

The interesting thing about the Pujols saga is that there really aren't a lot of suitors for him. The Yanks and Red Sox both have younger options at 1B, although neither is as productive as Pujols, he's going to be in decline by the end of a 10 year contract and I don't see a team like the Yankees making the same A-Roid mistake again. And of course they already have Tex at 1B. The Mets have a $1 billion lawsuit coming and no matter how much payroll they shed, I don't think they want to take on $30 mill in one player. It really comes down to the Cubs and Cardinals. The Cubs have the balls to pony up the cash and they will need a 1B-man when Pena is shipped off to the scrapyard after this season. The fact that the Cubs are in play will push the Cards to get a deal done, but they will probably have to pay even more in November to get Albert than they would have if they signed him up now. I guess they're banking on the hope that no one would be crazy enough to give Pujols a 10 year deal, but since A-Rod got one, it's clearly possible.

Re: MLB 2011 Spring Training Thread

I don't think anybody besides those on the inside of the negotiations know exactly how much money was offered. I think that everything we have heard is just speculation and hearsay. And who decides that the 75 million is how far they are apart? Is that just from the speculation that he wants 300 million and the Cardinals supposedly offered 225 million? I think that Pujols will see what other teams will offer and go back to the Cardinals and tell them he wants a fair amount according to his perceived value and the Cardinals will sign him. He will just use the other teams to get a "fair" amount and not even go after the biggest contract (unless it is absurd). The only way this doesn't happen is if he or the organization turns on the other during the season.

I agree, nobody knows what's really going on, but I'm sure what's best for my favorite team is what's really happening.
