Yeah, that AS Roma-Shaktar match should be spectacular!

Good job by the Spurs players to keep their cool and not let the 2nd half turn into a hockey game.

Cracking Game today.

Barca slowed it down too much in the 2nd.

Nice to see the arrogant pricks lose after being up a goal.

Good job Gunners. I still like Barca's chances though going back home with an away goal.

Re: UEFA CL Round of the 16

A little late (sorry, health issues):
Arsenal 2-1 Barcelona (BAR 26' Villa, ARS 78' Van Persie, ARS 83' Arshavin)
Roma 2-3 Shakatar Donetsk (ROM 28' Rat (og), SHA 29' Jadson, SHA 36' Costa, SHA 41' Adriano, ROM 61' Menez)

Was 0:30 late to tune in to the Arsenal-Barca match, so I just missed Villas' goal. The remaining part of 1H that I saw, the Gunners seemed to be pressing with the ball while Barca was just sitting back. They had 1-2 scary counter attacks, but possession seemed to be heavily in Arsenal's favor. Imagine my surprise when the HT numbers showed Barcelona with a 59-41 possession edge. Wow, they must've completely dominated that first 0:30! 2H was thrilling, and I was absolutely delighted with the two late goals. On to Camp Nou.

I'm a complete newb, but is Man U just playing for a draw here?

I didn't see that one but the "ideal" result for the away half of the home and home is to get an away goal. A 1-1 result is better than 0-0. Of course a 1-0 away win is even better. Can't imagine United would have felt they had to play that conservatively vs Marseille. Sometimes when the home side plays so careful of giving up that away goal you end up having a hard time creating any sorta chances and the fans are stuck with a snoozer.

0-0 is a pretty dangerous position to be in coming back for the home leg; if one goal slips through it could be disastrous (since that'd require you score 2 in order to win)

OK, that's what I thought, it just seemed odd. I guess I don't know enough about either team to know the difference between strategy and just being outplayed.

Re: UEFA CL Round of the 16

I'm significantly behind - sorry. Doctor's orders, lots of down time to watch sports, but not much 'puter time to keep things up to date.

Here were the results of the Tuesday/Wednesday fixtures this week:
Copenhagen 0-2 Chelsea (CHEL Anelka 17' & 54')
Lyon 1-1 Real Madrid (RM Benzema 65', LYO Gomis 83')
Internazionale 0-1 Bayern Munich (BM Gomez 90')
Marseille 0-0 Manchester United

The return leg fixtures (and current aggregate):

Tuesday 3/8:
Barcelona - Arsenal (Ars 2-1)
Shakhtar Donetsk - Roma (SD 3-2)

Wednesday 3/9:
Schalke - Valencia (level 1-1)
Spurs - AC Milan (Spurs 1-0)

Tuesday 3/15:
Bayern Munich - Internazionale (BM 1-0)
Manchester United - Marseille (level 0-0)

Wednesday 3/16:
Chelsea - Copenhagen (Chel 2-0)
Real Madrid - Lyon (level 1-1)

Re: UEFA CL Round of the 16

BTW - I know that this kinda "irks" the soccer/football purists, but when watching a home-and-home tie where goal aggregate and then away goals are used to determine the winner, I have found it helpful to follow the overall scoring by assigning each away goal a value of 1.1 versus the 1.0 a home goal is worth. This system works fine if no team scores 10 or more goals (obviously). Using this system, your current scores going into the 2nd leg fixtures would be:

Barcelona 1.1 - 2.0 Arsenal
Shakhtar Donetsk 3.3 - 2.0 Roma
Schalke 1.1 - 1.0 Valencia
Spurs 1.1 - 0.0 AC Milan
Bayern Munich 1.1 - 1.0 Internazionale
Manchester United 0.0 - 0.0 Marseille
Chelsea 2.2 - 0.0 Copenhagen
Real Madrid 1.1 - 1.0 Lyon

Re: UEFA CL Round of the 16

(relocating from the EPL thread):

RVP and Fabregas will start today for Arsenal at Camp Nou

Barcelona:
G Valdés
D Abidal - Busquets - Adriano - Alves
M Mascherano - Iniesta - Xavi
F Villa - Messi - Pedro

Arsenal:
G Szczęsny
D Koscielny - Djourou - Clichy - Sagna
M Wilshere - Diaby - Nasri - Rosicky
F Van Persie - Fábregas

Damn, but that Barcelona XI looks like the best Spanish squad I've ever seen.

---later---

Arsenal's old nemesis, Messi, comes through in 1H stoppage time.

Barcelona 1-0 Arsenal (Messi 45+3')

Barca now leading the tie 1-0 on away goals. Not looking good for the Gunners, with the entire 1st half played in their end (Barca 76-24% on possession) and now needing a goal, and with Szczęsny having come out with an injury at 19' for Alumnia.

---stupid fact from ESPN---

Stats: In the last four contests between Barca and Arsenal, the side that has opened the scoring has failed to win.

HT Scores:
Barcelona 1-0 Arsenal (2.1-2.0) - Arsenal must score in 2H or be eliminated
Shakhtar 1-0 Roma (4.3-2.0) - Roma need 3 now

Re: UEFA CL Round of the 16

Barca scores again - but its an own goal by Busquets!

Barcelona 1-1 Arsenal (2.1-3.1)

Huge! Barcelona need 1 to force extra time and possible pk's, while the Gunners could pretty much win the tie now with another. Damn - wish I could see this live rather than follow via ESPN's GameTracker!

Re: UEFA CL Round of the 16

RVP Red Card... Well, so much for Gunners getting another. I'm betting Barca will have a 90-10% advantage now in 2H.

And stick a fork in Roma, Shakhtar just scored again.

Goal Messi (71' pen)

Barcelona 3-1 Arsenal (4.1-3.1) - no chance of OT/PKs now. 29' left in Arsenal's UCL season.

Bendtner and Arshavin come on for Arsenal. At least Wenger isn't going to let them go down without a fight.
