College Hoops, February 14-20 **Bracketbusters Weekend**

If there are dog days of college basketball for teams, these next few weeks are it. But many of our non-major schools are taking a break from conference play this weekend to try to bolster their iffy resumes with good non-conference tests: that's Bracketbusters. Unfortunately, this season, it's a little less spicy than usual (in terms of selection Sunday impact): looking like a weekend of St. Mary's vs. Utah State and what can the CAA powers do? Also get a rare Friday night national-TV heavyweight game.

Ugh, 'Cuse needs a 5-hour energy or something to kick-start them again.

Re: College Hoops, February 14-20 **Bracketbusters Weekend**

Big couple of weekends for Arizona coming up. Home games against Washington St. on Thursday and Washington on Saturday, then heading out to USC the following Thursday and UCLA that Saturday. Go 3-1 in that stretch and it should lock up their bid, and possibly the Pac-10 crown as well.

I wasn't able to tune in from the beginning, what's up with these coach cams in the KU/KSU game? They're really annoying.

ESPN is trying a whole bunch of goofy production things this week. They did that. They had Raftery and Bilas analyze from the either end of court in the game before. Gottleib is going to direct some of the game he works this week. They are miking up one of the refs in a game tonight. 2 women are going to call a game on Thursday.

Mason destroys VCU to wrap up at least a share for the CAA regular season crown.

VT beats Maryland. That probably, finally kills off Maryland, if they weren't before.

Re: College Hoops, February 14-20 **Bracketbusters Weekend**

They were dead before. Key win for VT though. ACC is taking shape. 2 locks. FSU needs to basically hold serve without Singleton down the stretch (2 wins should do it). VT with a good chance to finish 10-6. Big ??? about Clemson and BC. That's it. I see 4 bids, maybe 5.

Geo. Mason pk pays. Easy money. This team is on fire, running roughshod over a decent CAA. While I don't think they'll get everything to go their way in the tourney, I dare say this is a better Mason team than the '06 one. They've got a great chance of going 16-2 in the CAA, which is phenomenal. @UNI, even though depleted, won't be easy however.

This conversely spells trouble for VCU. It pretty much makes their game at Wichita a must-win for any at-large hopes, and I'm not sure that will be enough.

All the other MVC and CAA principals won last night so that's good for the weekend.

St. John's is single-handedly hurting the Big East's chance of getting 10 or 11. Win at Cincy. Win at Marquette. Nice job. Steve Lavin Big East COTY possibly? Who would've thunk it?

Good brief snippets on each of the non-major conference races as they head down the stretch:

.....and yes, that Valpo game tonight is huge given what 1st place regular season means for the Horizon tourney.

Just noticed that Coastal Carolina dropped their first conf game last night. That leaves Texas as the only undefeated in conference.

Not a surprising loss by Wisconsin. Would like to see these 2 face off again in the B1G semis....probably a showdown for the right to go to Chicago in the Tourney.

Yeah, it was a good last 10 minutes or so.

G'Town has taken the lead against UCONN. I have no clue how this game isn't on TV.

Meanwhile Cincy is back up 13 on L'Ville. Would be huge for them.

Kemba back on track tonight - having a huge game. Great contest heading down to the final minute.

It is on TV, well if you have MASN (or sportspack).

Re: College Hoops, February 14-20 **Bracketbusters Weekend**

Take our solid at-large candidates (current Tournament Odds at 75 percent or better), and you have exactly 33 teams in the field. Add in the remaining automatic qualifiers, and that's another 21 spots. All told, we have 54 of the 68 spots accounted for, with only 14 up for grabs among current bubble teams.

The bubble (27 teams for 14 spots)
IN (14, in S-curve order): 34-Florida State, 36-Minnesota, 37-Old Dominion, 38-Georgia, 39-Virginia Tech, 40-Kansas State, 41-Marquette, 42-Alabama, 43-Cincinnati, 44-Baylor, 45-Boston College, 46-Richmond, 48-Michigan State, 49-Memphis

OUT (13, in S-curve order)
69-Wichita State, 70-UAB, 71-Butler, 72-Colorado State, 73-Washington State, 74-Clemson, 75-Oklahoma State, 76-Gonzaga, 77-New Mexico, 78-Penn State, 79-Duquesne, 80-Cleveland State, 81-VCU

Conference breakdown
The Big East still projects 11 teams into the bracket, with Cincinnati sitting at No. 43 on the S-curve as the league's low team. The Big 12, Big Ten and SEC have six, while the ACC has five. Other conferences with multiple bids include the Pac-10, Mountain West, and Atlantic 10 (all of which have three bids), while Conference USA and Colonial Athletic have two each.
