Fortunately it's just an award and doesn't mean anything. It was already decided for real at Churchill.

re: The One & The Only Horse Racing Thread

I'm a little bit surprised.

Bernadini's stud fee is less than AP Indy. Maybe that was the reason. Or, maybe the Zenyatta connections favored an 8 year old sire rather than a 22 year old sire.

Has Rachel been knocked up yet (or is 5 too young - I have no idea what horse years translate to in human years)? Weren't they going to breed her with Curlin?

That was the original plan. I haven't heard anything further on what are Jackson's plans.

NBC has won the rights for all the triple crown races for the next 5 years. They also have the rights to the Ky. Oaks (to be broadcast on VS) and the Derby undercard races (could be on NBC or VS.). Yeah, I'd prefer ESPN too.

As long as Durkin calls the races, I don't care which channel they come on.

Race 10 FagisTipton Fountain of Youth S. (Grade II)

Purse $400,000. For Three Year Olds. Distance: 1 1/8 miles

PP, Horse, Wgt., Jockey,Trainer, ML

1 Soldat, Garcia, 120, McLaughlin, 2/1

2 Gourmet Dinner, Dominguez, 120, Standridge, 5/1

3 El Grayling, Maragh 116,15/1

4 Casper's Touch, Solis, 116, McPeek, 6/1

5 Bowman's Causeway, Leparoux, 116, Biancone, 20/1

6 Racing Aptitude, Lezcano, 120, Tesher, 30/1

7 To Honor and Serve, Velazquez, 122, Mott, 8/5

First big prep race to the derby of the season.

I like Bowman's Causeway at 20-1. I feel reasonably certain he will be bet down.

As far as the Triple Crown Races goes, I prefer analysts crew over race caller. Clearly, IMO, ESPN has better analysts than does NBC.

Soldat wins the Fountain of Youth. The times were not very very impressive.

I've seen some lousy decisions made by racing stewards, but I just saw the worst decision I've ever seen in the Santa Anita Handicap. Clearly the winner should have been taken down.

Curlin shoots and scores! Rachel Alexandra is officially knocked up. The foaling is expected Feb. 1.

Apparently Zenyatta is going to have pregnancy test sometime this week to see if Bernardini has the goods.

Uncle Mo on track for the Wood Memorial and Derby after an easy win in a tuneup race at Gulfstream.

Did anyone have the exacta in the Tampa Bay Derby? Wow.

re: The One & The Only Horse Racing Thread

I thought Uncle Mo would run in the Tampa Bay Derby. He was co-entered. Did the distance and field have anything to do with Pletcher's decision?

I was hoping he would run in the Arkansas Derby. Why not? It pays more.

Have any of you ever attended the Kentucky Derby? We are wanting to plan a trip for next year (2012). I'd prefer seats to general admission but can't find any guides that say when they typically go on sale and other travel tips, etc.

re: The One & The Only Horse Racing Thread

It's really a meaningless race. The last two winners of the derby didn't win a single race after their victory at Churchill.

No - I haven't been. I have been to Churchill Downs. I watched the Breeder's Cup when Invasor defeated Bernadini in the Classic.

I want to go to a Derby someday. Not because of the race....but for the experience. But it actually has a good undercard too. Have done the Preakness....4 times....hard (infield hard).

re: The One & The Only Horse Racing Thread

Saturday, 3/19/11, Oakland Park, The Rebel Stakes, Grade 2, Purse: $300,000, Distance: 1 1/16 miles

1 Archarcharch, Court, 122, Fires. 8/1

2 Alternation, Quinonez, 117, Von Heme,l 12/1

3 Dreaminofthewin, Berry, 115,Trout, 30/1

4 Picko's Pride, Ocampo, 115, Robertson, 20/1

J P's Gusto, Dominguez, 117, Petalino, 5/1

6 The Factor, Garcia, 117, Baffert, 2/1

7 Caleb's Posse, Razo, Jr., 122, Von Hemel, 20/1

8 Saratoga Red, Thompson, Lukas, 30/1

9 Sway Away, Gomez, 115, Bond, 5/2

10 Elite Alex, Borel, 115, Ritchey, 8/1

11 Glint, Saez, 117, Gorde, 20/1

12 Bluegrass Jam, Baze, 115, Fires, 30/1

13 J W Blue, Rocco, Jr. 117, Dutrow

I figured the Baffert horse would be favored. Baffert is a hot trainer, and his horse won last years Rebel. Problem - can he get the distance?

IMO, Sway Away is the horse to beat.

I like Archarcharch also. He won The Southwest impressively. It was a 1 mile race.

I like Elite Alex also.

The wife wants to do the Derby as she's wanting to get all tricked out with a dress & hat. I'm going along because I'll be doing the Bourbon Trail six distillery tour in the days preceding. Win-Win.

re: The One & The Only Horse Racing Thread

I saw the most impressive performance I've seen this year for a 3-year old. The Factor is the the real deal. He ran from the front the entire race. I thought he was beaten when 3-4 horses closed in on him at the top of the stretch. He then seemed to shift into overdrive and won the race with ease. This was a pretty good field.

I think Bafferts plan is to run him in The Arkansas Derby. Since he got the 1 1/16 easily, he should have no problem with the 1 1/8 mile derby. Now 1 1/4 miles might be a different story, but I doubt it.

His final time was 1:42 & change. That's pretty good for Oak Lawn - certainly not the fastest track in the country.

Interesting given that Baffert also won the Rebel last year with Lookin' at Lucky.
