Men over 30 wearing sports jerseys

Here in Chicago on Sports talk radio the host was making fun of grown men wearing sports jerseys. Not at sporting events , but when they wear it everywhere else. What do you guys think?

Re: Men over 30 wearing sports jerseys

As a man over 30 that wears sports jerseys.. I can say that it's what I like to wear and show my support for a team or player.

If i'm going to dinner or a bar or something I don't see the problem. Now maybe if I was going to a concert or a play or something maybe it would be better to wear something different.

Re: Men over 30 wearing sports jerseys

It doesn't bother me either way, but I'm 40 and I would feel kind of silly wearing a sports jersey anywhere (less so at a sporting event, but would still feel a little silly).

I don't know what the cutoff age should be, but I guess 30 is probably within the range.

Don't see the big deal. Doesn't have to be a sporting event, it can be a game day or something too.

I am 35, and mostly wear my jersey's at sporting events. I only wear jersey's from my favorite players growing up (Toon, Walker, Chrebet, Hershiser, and Karros)

I agree completely and I'd set the age over mid-teens. Jerseys should only be worn at: 1) a game (and the team must be participating at that game), 2) a sports bar (the team must be playing, preferably a bar that caters to that team), 3) a fantasy draft, 4) in the solitude of your own home (watching your team play).

I don't think I've worn a jersey since I was rocking Jordan's jersey from the Dream Team when I was in junior high.

I have quite a few jerseys and don't see wearing them any worse than people that sport American Eagle and Abercrombie and Fitch stuff.

This. I don't really concern myself with what people choose to wear. I don't have any steadfast rules or do's and dont's in regards to casual attire.

Though to be fair I will laugh at affected tools trying to 'look cool'.

Re: Men over 30 wearing sports jerseys

After years of being the token Bengals fan in Maryland, I proudly wear the colors on game days around the house, to the bar, or to the tailgate, depending on where I am. And on the Friday before a big rivalry weekend, I typically wear a jersey to work. Just this Friday I wore the personalized jersey my wife got me for Father's Day a few years back. Sure we lost, but that wasn't my fault.

I'm turning 48 next month. I expect I'll be wearing the Stripes for a long, long time.

I don't bust one out that often (Niners fan... Yeeeeeeeeesh) but I wear my Steve Young throwback during throwback week(s). I'm 40 and could give a shit less what society thinks I should wear... There's some uptight peeps in the world.

...and they probably have political bumper stickers.

Re: Men over 30 wearing sports jerseys

I made nothing out of it when I first heard the radio host talking about it months ago.
But a few weeks ago the topic came up again and it was because the Bears & Packers game.
The Bears won in Chicago and a couple of Bear fans in their jerseys taunted Packer players.
The incedent made the Chicago papers. These fans were grown men acting the fool.
To me jerseys cost alot of money, so it's just a expensive shirt.
The only way I think a man over 30 can look like a fool is if the jersey is to tight on him and it makes him look like he's preggers. Of course if he's drunk and acting the fool but the same can be said for a man in a suit.

That reminds me. I should add the statement "Acting the fool" to the thread of statements that someone should get slapped for if they say it.

This.
I'm 33 and wear basketball jerseys fairly frequently. I don't really care if anyone's opinion of me is lessened by this.

Re: Men over 30 wearing sports jerseys

I'm waaaaaaaay past 30 and I wear Cubs jerseys frequently. And being waaaaaaaaay past 30, I have long since stopped giving a fuck what anyone thinks about what I wear.
Mine have no player names on the back, fwiw. Just a personal preference.

Plus, I find it funny that "30" has been determined as some arbitrary magical cutoff age

I agree tenfold with that. My dad is well over 60 and he still rocks Hockey jerseys anytime he can. He came to my wedding in one :-P. (it was a costume affair) But that's like saying that anybody over 30 can only wear polo shirts or can't wear band t-shirts. If you like something (and it fits you properly within reason), wear it. End of story and screw the rest.

Re: Men over 30 wearing sports jerseys

Once you get to geezer stage, you should be allowed to do any damn thing you want. So I'll amend my previous age rule to 15-65.

Re: Men over 30 wearing sports jerseys

Generally just wear mine on game day inside the house or if I attend a game. Outside shopping, not a jersey but a regular sports t-shirt. Doesn't phase me if someone else does.

Grown men just look stupid walking around normally in sports jerseys. Then again, grown men also look stupid walking around in tee shirts with Ambercrombie in huge letters across their chest too.

Certain clothes are simply for kids/teens. Sports jerseys (when not playing/watching) and branded clothing happens to be just that.

I have a few jerseys (one football, two hockey), but I only wear them when I am going to a game or somewhere to watch a game. Although, I think there are levels to what type of jerseys look the worst on adults (in order of worst to decent):
  • Basketball (just an expensive tank top)
  • Baseball (you're not in little league any more pal)
  • Football
  • Hockey
  • International Team Soccer (they're generally low key enough)
