Breaking news: Jeter still thinks he is worth a truckload of cash and his agent thinks the Yankees are crazy.

Joey Votto named the NL MVP.

Not a surprise to anyone, though it's interesting to consider that Pujols won the Silver Slugger (best offensive player) at 1B and the Gold Glove (defense), and yet it was Votto who nearly swept the first place votes for MVP getting 31 of 32.

No other team in MLB is going to offer Jeter the money that the Yanks will. They're negotiating with themselves.

That's because his team made the playoffs. Voters favor those players, and I think part of the reason is the word "valuable" in the award. The idea is that player X is more valuable than player y because X led his team to the playoffs and Y didn't. If it was called Most Outstanding Player, I think it would be like the Cy Young where they don't really care how the team does.

Although, FWIW, Votto was my choice by a VERY close margin, and I don't take team performance into account.

And here's what Jon Heyman said on his Twitter about why he voted Pujols 4th:

pujols is the best player on earth. reason i voted him 4th was he played for a disappointing team whereas votto, a-gone and halladay didnt

my vote is based on most valuable, not best, as the award suggests. harder to be valuable for an also-ran. cards/rockies also rans this yr

Isn't it also easier to appear to be a better player when you're surrounded by a better team. I don't think that Pujols should have won but I also don't agree with him being ranked at fourth simply because of his "value".

Not bad for someone who didn't initially make the all-star team

Explain 1987 for Andre Dawson winning it for a last place team.
It's if the sports writers like you.
What Albert did that cost him the award with the liberal media was he showed up for Glenn Beck's rally this year.

Re: MLB 2010-11 Offseason & Hot Stove Thread

Im guessing they offer Tek arbitration and split him with Salty, which doesnt sound too great... I know Martinez is an avg at best catcher, and probably will be a dh/1b in the next season or 2, but the alternative is pretty grim. I just hope they are banking on a bigger deal because they need bullpen help and now replace v-mart's and more than likely Beltre's bat.

Aubrey Huff resigns with the SF Giants - 2 years 22 million.

After years of slamming Sabean only to be proven wrong this year, I hope this is a good move.

Yankees want Jeter to test the market if their offer isn't to his liking.

If I'm managment I don't budge. Dude has made obscene cash during his NY career... 3/45 is more than fair for Mr. Yankee and his diminishing skills. Though I'm sure the Yankees will pony up some more before the smoke clears.

Fuck this guy.

A follow up to the NL MVP discussion...an interesting point (and I read this elsewhere) to consider when defining "valuable" - if Votto/Pujols switched places last year, isn't it safe to say the standings would have looked exactly the same. That's how similar both guys were.

I'm not real familiar with Mr. Heyman, though I have now concluded that he is an idiot. Also-ran is a team that finished 5 games out? Yet, a vote for Gonzalez is justified over Pujols despite the fact the Padres didn't make the playoffs and blew a big lead. I've become more and more certain that some guys use their ballot as a way to vote a little differently so they can get their name out there.

Rollins 8 mill. Hanley 11. Reyes 11. I think Jeter at 15 mill might still be the highest paid SS in MLB.

Re: MLB 2010-11 Offseason & Hot Stove Thread

White Sox offered arbitration to Konerko and Putz but not Pierzynski or Manny (shock!).

I don't know who they think is going to catch for us. With V-Mart already gone (and in our division against us), they should be locking AJ down right now.

Damn, I was hoping the Twins would take a stab at Konerko.
