Re: The 2010-11 Barclays English Premier League (EPL) Discussion

What a joke of a club.

Simply Red guitarist joins Liverpool FC backroom staff

Liverpool have enlisted the services of former Simply Red star Sylvan Richardson as the club's new masseur.

The guitarist was part of the legendary soul group's original line-up in 1985 but quit in two years later after becoming disillusioned with the music industry.

Richardson is currently in the Reds' Swiss pre-season training camp resort of Bad Ragaz after being installed as part of the club's new-look medical team.

Speaking to the club's official website, he revealed that he is enjoying the experience despite the ribbing he has received from his new colleagues about his time with the Manchester band.

"They have been giving me a lot of stick," he said.

"Especially Sammy Lee. I am a professional producer and musician but I was always interested in medicine, and when I left the band in 1987, that's the path I went down.

"To work for Liverpool is a great honour and when I got the call I was really excited.

"My role is to prepare the players and deal with their recovery after training. I am used to working with top athletes and so am very much looking forward to this opportunity."

My goal for fantasy football this season is to be competitive while not fielding any players from the "big four" clubs.

BDB started one on the official league site. I usually play a team in both, but I thing the PremierLeague one is better. I guess we could do both?

Yeah, I ran a couple of teams on this site for a couple of seasons and it's a decent site to use - actually better than the Yahoo one.

I registered my team name and kit, but I guess you have to choose your layers and set the tam before joining the league, right?

Landon Donovan could have the chance to become the highest-paid American soccer player in history after Manchester City said Wednesday that the English Premier League club is trying to sign the United States star.

MLS is adamant that they won't sell him. I'll be curious how this plays out.

Manchester City set sights on Torres after signing Kolarov

By Graham Chase
Monday, 26 July 2010

Roberto Mancini will switch his attentions to recruiting another striker after finally tying up a deal for Lazio left-back Aleksandar Kolarov and yesterday indicated he will be monitoring the ongoing discord between Fernando Torres and Liverpool with interest.

The Manchester City manager left little doubt of his feelings towards the Spanish striker before the end of last season, claiming that he wanted to win the title and that any top team would want Torres.

Speaking ahead of City's 2-1 defeat at the New York Red Bulls yesterday, Mancini said: "Torres is one of the best strikers in Europe and is already playing in the Premier League for three years. But it depends on his situation – his price and whether he wants to come.

"There are two or three strikers that we could go for, but it is the same situation as it is with James Milner. First there is the price and then it depends if the players want to change team. Until today, Liverpool haven't bought many players."

Torres's continued reluctance to pledge his future to Liverpool, and new manager Roy Hodgson's admission that the striker felt let down by broken promises, may see City firm up their interest, with few other potential suitors for him. City are also pursuing Internazionale youngster Mario Balotelli but look set to miss out on Edin Dzeko, with the Bosnian forward claiming he wants to move to Italy and Wolfsburg insisting he is not for sale at any price.

Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool ambassador, hopes that captain Steven Gerrard's commitment to the club, coupled with the signing of midfielder Joe Cole, will still be enough to persuade Torres to stay. "I hope he stays but it's only Fernando that knows what he's really going to do," Dalglish said. "The fact that Stevie's staying will be a great help with Fernando. Joe Cole's signed, Milan Jovanovic has come in, Danny Wilson has signed from Rangers, they've got Jonjo Shelvey [from Charlton]."

Kolarov completed his £17m move to Eastlands from Lazio over the weekend and, after spending the Saturday and yesterday in Belgrade, will return to Manchester this week to train with those City players who have not travelled on the pre-season trip to the United States.

The Serbian is bullish about the club's prospects and thinks that Mancini – who has also signed David Silva, Yaya Touré and Jérôme Boateng at a total cost of £75m and is still tracking Aston Villa's James Milner – will bring the Premier League and Champions League titles to Eastlands.

"When I spoke with Mr Mancini, my choice was Manchester City because I know they are a good team, maybe a great team," he said. "The Premier League is the best in the world and he wants us to go further and win the Premier title and the Champions League. For a young player like me, this is the best opportunity. It's the dream. I know a little of the history of Manchester City, I know that it is over 30 years since the club won a trophy. We want to change that and win a trophy soon for the fans."

Although Mancini has stressed he wants to keep Wayne Bridge – Kolarov's rival for the left-back role – he will be looking to offload a number of players, including strikers Craig Bellamy and Roque Santa Cruz, and defenders Nedum Onuoha and Micah Richards.

Hope you're not classing Liverpool as one of the "big four"

In this instance I am, although it's hard to take them seriously as a contender for the league title. I don't know how this coming season will play out, but unless things change dramatically I think it's a two-horse race between Chelsea and Manchester United, with Arsenal, Man City, Spurs, and possibly Aston Villa a step or two behind. Bolton, Fulham, Everton, and Liverpool are behind that second group.

Strictly in terms of fantasy play, almost any Liverpool player is a poor choice. Torres and Gerrard are overpriced, especially given their injury concerns, and none of the other Liverpool players (save Reina) are guaranteed a lot of playing under a new manager. Mascherano is probably on his way out, we don't know how Hodgson will handle Cole and Kuyt, and so on. I suppose Glen Johnson is a safe choice.
