**world cup 2010 official thread**

Photobucket

I know there are a few soccer fans on the board so I thought I'd get an official 'World Cup 2010' thread started.

Although the tournament is still 56 days away - it'll be here before you know it.

Here is a link to ESPN's coverage of the event, complete with dates, times and channels

http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cu...-schedule.html

(sorry the first post is a little plain, I'll jazz it up later tonight)

Also, I seem to remember for the last World Cup there was a program for the desktop that allowed you to fill in the results and track the competition as it unfolded. I don't suppose anyone can remember that, or knows of where to get one downloaded?

Placeholder for link to the 2010 World Cup Pool I'll be starting in a few weeks.

While we're waiting, please relive the excitement from the 2006 Pool

Re: **world cup 2010 official thread**

I see two major storylines for the World Cup this year:

1) Will Spain actually win the Cup for the first time? They have a LOADED team but have always not done well in the knockout rounds.

2) Will Diego Maradona turn the fortunes of Argentinian team into a bad, drawn-out telenovela? (If you're fluent in Spanish, you know what I mean. )

It seems ridiculous, but I think Spain remains a bit underrated (considering they are ranked #1 by FIFA). Messi is an amazing player, but perhaps the reason he is so prolific for club and not so much country is the absence of Xavi and Iniesta. If Villa and Torres can remain healthy, they'll benefit from the brilliance of Barca's Center-mid's.

I think a huge factor will be the climate. It will be wintertime in South Africa, and I have to think that the teams who played in the Confederations Cup last year might have a bit of an advantage in that respect . . . they'll know what to expect.

I'd love to see a new champion come out of this tournament (Netherlands, Spain, USA) but Brazil is going to be a very tough out. They will be a much stronger (physically) side than we're used to from them. Very deep as well (Pato and possibly Alves coming off the bench).

And Kenbuzz, thanks so much for reminding me of my last place finish four years ago. This time around, I'm hoping to come back strong like the USA did in 2002.

Looking forward to this..

would have prefered the games not be so early on the West Coast!
the 630am starts aren't that bad, but the 4am! eek.

But you have to remember those starting times are to accommodate European television, which means 11:00 am UK/Portugal / 12:00 noon Central Europe time starts for the early game and and 1:30 pm UK/Portugal / 2:30 pm Central Europe time starts for the late game.

Re: **world cup 2010 official thread**

Damn, no Charlie Davies. It was a long shot, but it would have been a tremendous story, not to mention he was hotter than hot last summer in South Africa. Great to see some of the other injured players getting healthy in time to get a shot, especially Brian Ching, Oguchi Onyewu, and Stuart Holden.

Can't wait, vacation requests are approved for all of the key match days. This tournament is going to be awesome.

Re: **world cup 2010 official thread**

Yeah though Davies comeback is amazing up to this point he just wasn't quite fit enough to make the squad.

Also I don't think this is the absolute final roster but just the prelim 30 right?

Edit: Yes this isn't the finalized roster:

CHICAGO (May 11, 2010) — U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley has submitted to FIFA the 30-man preliminary roster for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. From this list, a squad of 23 players must be chosen by June 1 for the final roster that will travel to South Africa. The 30 players will begin reporting to Princeton, N.J., on May 15 for the start of training camp, with field sessions beginning two days later.

Re: **world cup 2010 official thread**

Early pick: Brazil. Luis Fabiano is the best striker in the world at the moment. I wonder if they'll bring back Ronaldinho.
I like the Dutch as well, but It would be amazing to see an African team in the final.

Fuck Italy. I'd red card the whole team each time they dive.

Correction, he did not make the preliminary 23 man squad. He did make the 30 man squad although Brazil coach Dunga stated that he would only be used as a sub and/or in case of injuries. Adriano, Neymar, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos did not make the 30 man squad.

And this is a surprise? They didn't pick Romario, Rivelino, Socrates, or Pele either.

Too bad about Socrates. I'll never forget his finisher against the Germans:
